A method for controlled target strength measurements of pelagic fish, with application to European anchovy ( Engraulis encrasicolus ) ArchiMer

Measuring fish target strength (TS) in the wild is challenging because: (i) TS varies versus physical (orientation relative to the incident sound wave, size, and depth) and physiological fish attributes (maturity and condition), (ii) the target species and its aforementioned attributes are difficult to assess in near real time, and (iii) in the case of packed fish schools, accepted echoes may originate from multiple unresolved targets. We propose a method for controlled TS measurements of densely packed small pelagic fish during daytime, based on the joint use of a Remotely Operated Towed Vehicle, “EROC”, with a pelagic trawl fitted with a codend opening system, “ENROL”. Pour être en phase avec les recommandations de la communauté européenne, les missions ORHAGO doivent utiliser un chalut à perche pour la constitution des indices d'abondance de sole dans le golfe de Gascogne. Un chalut à perche de 4 m (environ 2000 kg) a été construit et acheté aux Pays-Bas dans l'optique des futures campagnes à la mer. La campagne TECHORHAGO visait à essayer et à mettre au point les différentes manoeuvres de mise à l'eau et de virage du chalut en le remorquant sur les deux treuils du Gwen-Drez. L'EROC (Engin Remorqué d'Observation des Chaluts) était embarqué.

The French brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) fishery employs on a seasonal basis around 140 ships about 10 metres in length and with engines of about 100 kilowatts of power. It takes place mainly along the coastal bottoms of silted-up sand at a depth of 2 to 10 metres and occupies principally the coasts of the eastern English Channel and those of the Gulf of Gascony. The brown shrimp catch is performed by bottom trawl, with exempted meshing of 20 mm (stretched mesh), which causes numerous rejects of immature fish that live on the same bottoms. The main part of these juveniles is made up of flat fish (sole, in particular) and of gadidae (whiting and pout). Starting from the year 2000, the European Union planned to establish the use of a selective trawl in brown shrimp (Crangon crangon) fisheries. In fact, the brown shrimp is caught by a bottom trawl equipped with stretched 20 mm exempted meshing in estuary areas where the nurseries of flat fish and gadidae are located. For Vilaine's estuary, Dupouy et al (1997) estimated at about 1 tonne of flat fish and one tonne of gadidae the loss in equivalent fish of marketable size, per landed tonne of brown shrimp. In this document, the authors introduce improvements resulting from the use of selective trawls developed in France (Asselin and Devismes trawls), and they show by what means the selectivity of these trawls can be improved further.

The landing obligation implemented under the Common Fisheries Policy promoted the development of fishing gear selective devices. The REDRESSE project conducted in the Bay of Biscay was the opportunity for trawl fleets targeting cephalopods, Nephrops and demersal fish to continue to test various selective configurations to reduce their discards levels. The sea trials were carried out onboard of commercial fishing vessels and the experimental tows were sampled by an observer. Most of the selective devices were tested under the twin trawl method, with on one side the gear to be tested and on the other, the standard commercial gear. The lack of specific Target Strength (TS) values for European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardina Pilchardus) in the literature has been pointed out by the Working Group on Acoustic and Egg Surveys for Sardine and Anchovy in ICES Areas VIII and IX. The need for specific small pelagics TS measurements conducted in controlled environments was recognized by the group, to further investigate the adequacy of TS length equation used to derive fish stock estimates for clupeids in European waters. Lorient Flume tank ArchiMer

The Lorient flume tank is an hydrodynamic facility available for any qualification and observation of submerged objects in still or moving water. It is a closed loop circulating tank filled with fresh water.  The fluid is moved with a 70 kW pump-motor with a velocity between 0 and 1 m/s and homogenized with a series of pressure drop systems. The overall dimensions are 24.50 m long, 7.50m wide and 3.30 m high. The part where experiments can be set up is 12m long, 2.6 m wide and 1.5 m deep.  A mobile bottom belt can be synchronized with the water flow velocity and enables to simulate the seabed velocity relatively to a towed object. The overall process of the facility is controlled by a user friendly interface.

The new ORHAGO campaigns, which aim to form a multi-year series of biological and ecological data, are relying on the use of twin trawls associated with a new type of rigging. The ORHAGO1 campaign should make it possible to make adjustments of the diverse elements of the fishing train in order to obtain an optimal configuration. This preliminary adjustment is indispensable for obtaining reliable data during ORHAGO campaigns. Le projet Jumper a été déposé en réponse à l’appel d’offre de France Filière Pêche (FFP) de mai 2012. Il se base sur une proposition de l’ANOP et de l’UAPF. Le projet est porté par le CNPMEM en partenariat avec l’Ifremer, les établissements Morgère et l’IMP. Il a été labellisé par le Pôle Mer Bretagne Atlantique fin 2012. Le calendrier prévisionnel prévoyait que les travaux soient réalisés du 1er janvier 2013 au 30 juin 2014. Un avenant a permis de les poursuivre jusqu’à fin 2014 et d’organiser la restitution début 2015. Preliminary results of a trawl fitted with a selective grid for the fishery of benthic species from Celtic Sea and Bay of Biscay ArchiMer

The fishery for benthic species (Monkfish, Megrim, Rays, etc ... ) represents for the surrounder countries of the Celtic Sea and the Bay of Biscaye one of the most important activities . An estimate of the discards of the main species resulting from the sorting practice onboard of the trawlers participating in this fishery was made in 1985 and 1991. it was concluded that an important quantity of juveniles of Rays, Megrim and Monkfish are discarded each year causing an important mortality.
