A Survey of Literature on Genetically Modified Crops: Economics, Ethics and Society AgEcon

This paper reports on a review of literature in the form of academic papers and published research on ethical and consumer issues for GM crops in North America, with particular emphasis on GM wheat. The issues raised in these papers and the findings and arguments posed by the authors are outlined. A general conclusion that can be drawn from this overview is that public attitudes toward GM foods are diverse and sometimes quite strongly held. The strong negative views of GM food held by some appear to be mainly grounded in individuals’ ethical or moral values. This study focuses on the demand for meat and the market vulnerabilities that apply to four selected Asian markets that are of potential importance to meat exporters. The markets identified for this purpose are Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, and Singapore. An initial overview of market prospects and vulnerabilities based on previous studies is reported. Detailed assessments of import demand and substitution between various meats for meat exports from Canada/Alberta to each of these markets was also undertaken. Are Country of Origin and Non-GM Premiums Invariant to Experimental Auction Structure? AgEcon

A revealed preference auction experiment is used to elicit values for two attributes, one relating to genetic modification and the other to country of origin of the food product, canola oil. A premium for a non-GM canola oil is found to approximate CA$0.4 to $0.6 per litre. Auction format effects are found and hypotheses as to why these may occur are suggested.

This paper adopts an approach based on the concepts of random utility maximization and builds on the general theoretical framework of Lancaster and on the conceptual and econometric innovations of McFadden. Recent research in this area explores models that account for context effects, as well as methods for characterizing heterogeneity, response variability and decision strategy selection by consumers. This makes it possible to construct much richer empirical models of individual consumer behavior. BSE and the Dynamics of Beef Consumption: Influences of Habit and Trust AgEcon

This study relates habit persistence and trust to recurring food safety incidents in the context of a series of three BSE incidents in Canada. We examined the dynamics of monthly beef expenditure shares of a sample of Canadian households for monthly time periods during year 2002 through 2005 using micro level panel data which followed meat expenditures by Canadian households before and after the first three BSE cases which were discovered in 2003 and 2005. Canadian Consumers' Preferences for Food Safety and Agricultural Environment Safety AgEcon

This project applies statistical models to analyse the relative importance ratings for selected food risk issues given in January 2003 by a representative cross-Canada sample of consumers. Ratings for environmental risks that may be associated with agriculture are also assessed. Results of ordered probit econometric models that analyze the influence of respondent's socio-economic and demographic characteristics on food and environmental risk ratings indicate that these are influenced by gender, age, income, employment and location of residence. The Canadian dairy industry faces a changing market environment as processors react to apparent shifts in consumers' preferences, consumers react to an altered mix of products on retail dairy shelves, and industry adjusts to potential pressures of competition and the challenge of new market opportunities under the impetus of changes arising from international trade. The motivation for this study is the lack of knowledge of millers' preferences for noodle wheat in Asia, where noodle wheat is an expanding market segment. Data for the study are from interviews and questionnaires completed by millers in South Korea and Japan. Two different methodologies were applied--stated preference methods and semantic differential scales. Consistent results are seen from each method. Millers' choices of wheat with varying characteristics were analysed with multinomial logit models. These estimates are used to identify millers' preferred product profiles for various types of wheat and flour. The Canada-United States Free Trade Agreement (CUSTA) and the subsequent North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) have contributed to increasing concentration of agricultural trade between the United States and Canada. This has heightened bilateral trade tensions and trade conflicts for numbers of Canadian farm products. Consumers' Responses to the Potential Use of Bovine Somatotrophin in Canadian Dairy Production AgEcon

The responses of a random sample of consumers to the use of bovine somatotrophin (BST) in milk production were elicited using a stated preference methodology. A multinomial logit model of consumer choice was developed and tested to analyse consumers' choices of milk with varying characteristics of fat content, price, freshness and BST treatment. Welfare calculations for a representative consumer indicate welfare losses with the introduction of BST which are not fully offset by preferred milk attributes such as reduced price or increased freshness levels. Welfare losses were slightly less for a male than a female consumer and were less for consumers with higher levels of income and education. DECOMPOSING UNOBSERVED CHOICE VARIABILITY IN THE PRESENCE OF CONSUMERS' TASTE HETEROGENEITY AgEcon

Heterogeneous tastes across consumers can be captured by random coefficients in a mixed logit (ML) model. However, other types of factors that may not directly affect taste could cause choices to vary, such as choice context, choice task complexity, and demographic characters. This paper jointly considers taste heterogeneity around reference-dependent attributes and other choice variability through inclusion of a scale function, based on data from a stated preference experiment for bread. Results demonstrate that modeling other sources of choice variability in addition to taste heterogeneity increases the model fit, although the improvement is not dramatic.
