Twenty-one (sub)species of Leptolida (Hydrozoa, Cnidaria) of the familes Haleciidae and Campanulariidae are described and figured, originating from collections made during the CANCAP and Mauritania- II expeditions of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (now Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum) to the north-eastern Atlantic in the years 1976-1988, visiting waters around the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, Cape Verde Islands and off Morocco and Mauritania. This material largely concerns well known species, the majority of which needs no detailed description. Exceptions are i.a. Halecium liouvillei Billard, 1934, Halecium sibogae marocanum Billard, 1934, Clytia arborescens Pictet, 1893, and Laomedea pseudodichotoma Vervoort, 1959. These species are... |

Twenty-three species, subspecies or varieties of hydroids of the families Thyroscyphidae and Sertulariidae (Leptolida, Hydrozoa, Cnidaria) are described and figured, originating from north-eastern Atlantic localities visited during the CANCAP and Mauritania-II Expeditions of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (now Nationaal Natuurhistorisch Museum) in the years 1976-1988 and covering waters around Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira, Cape Verde Islands and the Atlantic off Morocco and Mauritania. Besides notes on the variability of the various species in the large material available, vertical and horizontal distributions are discussed. Observations on the considerable material of Sertularella ellisii (Deshayes & Milne-Edwards, 1836) indicate that... |

The material on which the present report is principally based, was collected by Dr. J. H. STOCK, Zoological Museum of the University, Amsterdam, in Piscadera Bay, Curaçao, in 1958 and 1959, and kindly placed at my disposal some time ago. In the course of my study of this highly interesting material it became necessary to redescribe some of C. B. WILSON’S fragmentarily known species of Bomolochidae. A re-inspection of some of WILSON’S types has been made possible thanks to the generous co-operation of Dr. THOMAS E. BOWMAN, Associate Curator, Divison of Marine Invertebrates, and Dr. ROGER F. CRESSEY, Associate Curator, Division of Crustacea, both of the Smithsonian Institution (United States National Museum), Washington, U.S.A. The bulk of the Piscadera Bay... |

A description is given of a corymorphid polyp, Corymorpha tomoensis Ikeda, 1910, collected during an expedition of the National Museum of Natural History, Leiden, The Netherlands, to the Indonesian island of Ambon. This is the first record of a polyp of the genus Corymorpha M. Sars, 1835 from Indonesian waters; corymorphid medusae were collected during the Siboga Expedition and described by Maas (1905) as Euphysora bigelowi; the polyp of that species was subsequently reared in the laboratory (Sassaman & Rees, 1978) and identified as a species of Corymorpha. Species now classified in Corymorpha M. Sars, 1835 are briefly reviewed and their status and distribution discussed. |

In the course of 1944, whilst engaged with the revision of the collections of Hydroids in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden and the Zoological Museum at Amsterdam, I had the opportunity to study a considerable number of Hydroids from the tropical and subtropical parts of the three large oceans. No report has up to the present time been published on these Hydroids, although many specimens are of considerable interest. The present paper contains the results of the study of these samples, which were kindly put at my disposal by Prof. Dr. H. Boschma and Prof. Dr. L. F. de Beaufort. I also wish the express my sincere thanks to Mrs. W. S. S. van der Feen née van Benthem Jutting and Miss Dr. Jos. Th. Koster for their assistance in providing me... |

Gustav Albert Stiasny was born in Vienna (Austria) on December 10th, 1877. After he had attended the elementary and grammar schools there and having finished a one year course of lectures in commercial enterprise, Stiasny enlisted as a volunteer with the Austro-Hungarian army. A year later he left the army after he had obtained his commission, to take up an appointment with his father's commercial business. Young Stiasny, who was much interested in Natural History, soon left his father's affairs to give himself completely to the study of Zoology, Botany and Geology. For that purpose he attended lectures at the universities of Vienna and Jena. As about that time such celebrities as Hatschek, Grobben, Haeckel, et al., were lecturing there it is no wonder... |

In April 1949 Mr. J. A. W. Lucas, a student of Biology and a careful collector of marine animals, supplied the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie at Leiden with some specimens of Limnoria lignorum (Rathke), found in logs of wood washed ashore near Katwijk. These Isopods proved to be infested by a small Harpacticoid Copepod and by a species of Ostracod. These animals were occasionally observed on the oral appendages and the legs. The Copepods were attached to various parts of the carapace, usually the telson, and were very small (about 0.5 mm) and the identification met with considerable difficulties. They proved to be identical, at last, with Harrietella simulans (T. Scott, 1894), a species known from the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde in Great... |

INTRODUCTION The discovery of a new species of Hemicyclops, found pelagically in Argentine coastal waters, has made it necessary for us to summarize the descriptions of the species of Hemicyclops Boeck, 1872. In the course of our investigation, the results of which are laid down is this paper, it became necessary to construct a new key for the identification of the genera of Clausidiidae, which will be presented below. We have thought it advisable to state very briefly the position of the genera, basing ourselves mainly on the recent review of this family by Bocquet & Stock (1957). We refrain, at the present stage, from presenting diagnoses of all genera. Many species are commensals or parasites of Invertebrates and the number of known species has... |

INTRODUCTION Distribution and ecology of hydroids from coral reefs of high islands and atolls of French Polynesia so far have received little attention. Redier (1967, 1971) published a preliminary list of 14 species from Salvat's collections, sampled during several trips to Tahiti, Tuamoto (Mururoa, Reao and Maturei Vavao Atolls), to the Australes Islands (Rapa) and to Gambier. The present paper results from researches carried out by one of us (P.V.) concerning the benthic bionomy of reef sciophilous communities of hard bottoms. They have been carried out at Tiahura, Moorea, Society Islands (fig. IA) and on Takapoto Atoll, Tuamoto Archipelago (fig. 2A) in 1973 and 1974. They gave us occasion to compile a revised list of about 22 species of hydroids... |

At the instigation of Dr. Joel W. Hedgpeth, Resident Director, Marine Science Center, Oregon State University, Newport, Oregon, U.S.A., I studied samples of hydroids, collected by Dr. John C. McCain and Dr. William E. Stout from submarine cliffs in the region around Palmer Station, Antarctica. The hydroids had been obtained during an examination of the zonation of rocky substrates in that area in the austral summer of 1968-1969. During this survey 0.25 m2 samples were scraped from the rocks at 5 feet intervals down to a depth of 50 feet and at 10 feet intervals from 50 to 100 feet. Dr. McCain and Dr. Stout were able to complete one such transect and a portion of another (Hedgpeth, in litt., see also McCain & Stout, 1969). The bulk of the material on... |

Fourty-four species and one variety of hydroids were identified in the John Murray hydroid collection, obtained from the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea and the northern part of the Indian Ocean, largely from deep water localities. Of these 44 species 2 could be identified only to genus, 1 species is doubtfully mentioned and 5 are new to science. The 44 species we assigned to 2 families of athecate and 6 families of thecate hydroids. In many instances the species have been compared with the type material which, where necessary, was redescribed. A number of additional species, not represented in the John Murray collection has also been redescribed and/or figured. Practically all the John Murray hydroids are figured. Deposition of spirit-preserved type and... |
