Temperature affects the development, population dynamics, reproduction and population size of insects. Thaumastocoris peregrinus Carpintero et Dellape (Heteroptera: Thaumastocoridae) is a eucalyptus pest. The objective of this study was to determine biological and life table parameters of T. peregrinus on Eucalyptus benthamii at five temperatures (18 °C; 22 °C; 25 °C; 27 °C and 30 °C) with a relative humidity (RH) of 70 ± 10% and photoperiod of 12 hours. The duration of each instar and the longevity of this insect were inversely proportional to the temperature, regardless of sex. The nymph stage of T. peregrinus was 36.4 days at 18 °C and 16.1 days at 30 °C. The pre-oviposition period was 5.1 days at 30 °C and 13.1 days at 18 °C and that of oviposition was... |

The Thaumastocoris peregrinus spread to eucalyptus plantations in many countries. Chemical control is a questionable measure, mainly due to the environmental impact, high cost and moreover has the use restricted by the forest certifcations. Bio-insecticides may have similar efciency to chemical products to control T. peregrinus. The chemical thiamethoxam, thiamethoxam+lambda-cyhalothrin, acephate and the microbial Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae insecticides were tested at diferent doses to manage T. peregrinus. The products were sprayed on eucalyptus plants using aircraft and populations of this insect were counted before application and at 1, 14 and 21days afterwards (DAA). Ten eucalyptus trees were evaluated per plot, with the collection... |

The "Costa Lima" Quarantine Laboratory (LQCL), located at the Brazilian National Research Center for Monitoring and Environmental Impact Assessment (CNPMA)/Brazilian Agricultural Corporation (EMBRAPA), in the municipality of Jaguariúna, state of São Paulo, Brazil is the only Brazilian quarantine facility in the country authorized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA) to introduce natural enemies for pest control, as well as other beneficial organisms for scientific research. The ?Costa Lima? Lab has contributed to the classical biological control of several exotic forest pests in Brazil. In 2003, an important exotic pest to arrive in the country was the red gum lerp psyllid, Glycaspis brimblecombei. Between 2004 and 2006, the... |

The introduction of exotic pests has increased over time due to the growing traffic of people and goods. Just in the last decade, three new eucalypt pests were introduced in Brazil. Responsibility for biosecurity must be shared between government and productive sector, seeking for prevention or contingency of these invaders, avoiding their dispersion to main productive zones in the country. In this regard, the planted forests sector in Brazil has developed a collaborative work, involving research institutions, productive sector and government. Once well consolidated, cooperative research between academy and forest companies has brought besides productivity gains, new tools for pest management, especially biological control programs development. In... |
