Shrimp farming in New-Caledonia faces up to difficulties. A fluctuating quality of broodstock prevents sustainable production of larvae in quantity and quality. The traditional extensive rearing method of broodstock in outdoor earthen ponds used in New Caledonia raises several issues: poor water quality control and biosecurity. Therefore it is fundamental to modify the broodstock culture strategy in order to achieve an easier water quality management and maximal biosecurity. Campagne "AZTEQUE" de chalutage de fond au sud-est de la Nouvelle Calédonie (N.O. "ALIS", du 12 au 16 février 1990) IRD

Onze traits de chalut de fond ont été réalisés entre 235 et 500 m au sud-est de la Nouvelle-Calédonie, notamment sur trois monts sous-marins de la ride de Norfolk. Les récoltes en poissons ont été faibles, particulièrement en ce qui concerne les espèces commerciales. Au total, 74 espèces appartenant à 46 familles ont été identifiées. La comparaison de ces résultats avec les captures effectuées sur les mêmes lieux par d'autres bateaux de pêche utilisant des engins différents tend à montrer que les monts sous-marins concernés n'abritent, à ces profondeurs, que des ressources halieutiques limitées. Diurnal temporal patterns of the diversity and the abundance of reef fishes in a branching coral patch in New Caledonia ArchiMer

Small-scale spatial and temporal variability in animal abundance is an intrinsic characteristic of marine ecosystems but remains largely unknown for most animals, including coral reef fishes. In this study, we used a remote autonomous unbaited video system and recorded reef fish assemblages during daylight hours, 10 times a day for 34 consecutive days in a branching coral patch of the lagoon of New Caledonia. Effets de réserve sur les communautés de poissons récifaux de cinq îlots du parc du lagon sud de Nouvelle-Calédonie = Effects on coral reef fish communities from five islands of New Caledonia's southern lagoon marine reserve IRD

Les effets des réserves marines sur les communautés de poissons récifaux ont été étudiés sur cinq îlots du Parc du Lagon Sud de Nouvelle-Calédonie. Les poissons ont été échantillonnés par comptage en plongée (transects de 50 m, largeur variable). Un échantillonnage a été réalisé avant l'interdiction de la pêche et cinq ans après que les mesures de protection aient été prises. Dans le même temps, des stations témoins, localisées dans des zones non protégées, ont été échantillonnées afin de déterminer la variabilité naturelle. However, for this to become established at a commercial level, a cost-effective formulated feed based on internationally-available ingredients needs to be developed. We have evaluated the optimal dietary protein content for juvenile crabs, Scylla serrata (Forskål, 1775), using a series of diets with a protein content ranging from 27 to 49% and soy protein concentrate (SPC) as the main protein source. B&Bs may depend on habitat features and energetic limitations that constrain biomass within the natural variability of the environment and fish behaviors. Coral reefs provide ecosystem goods and services for millions of people in the tropics, but reef conditions are declining worldwide. Effective solutions to the crisis facing coral reefs depend in part on understanding the context under which different types of conservation benefits can be maximized. Les pêches exploratoires au chalut en baie de Saint Vincent (Nouvelle Calédonie) IRD

Quatre campagnes de chalutages exploratoires ont été mises en oeuvre dans la Baie de Saint-Vincent (nord de Nouméa) entre décembre 1984 et avril 1986. 85 traits de chaluts ont été menés à bien. 233 espèces représentant 59 familles ont été capturées. Les estimations de densité et biomasse ont diminué d'un facteur 13 entre la première et la quatrième campagne. Cette diminution n'est pas dûe à une pêche excessive (moins de 2% de la biomasse de la baie a été prélevée), ni à des changements des peuplements benthiques provoquées par le chalut.
