Carcass and meat quality of different pig genotypes in an organic extensive outdoor fatting system Organic Eprints

Carcass, meat, and fat quality were evaluated of 37 castrates of 4 different genotypes [Pi*Du*GLR (10), Pi*AS (7), Du (10), Du*GLR (10)] kept on grass clover and fed with coarse meal made up of farm grown cereal and grain legumes without optimising the amount of amino acids and their relation to the energy content. Due to the energy surplus in the diet and in relation to the diminishing muscularity of the genotypes (corresponding to the above-mentioned sequence) lean meat contents were on a low level whereas intramuscular fat contents increased distinctly. Erste Ergebnisse zur Mastleistung, Schlachtkörper- und Fleischqualität aus einem Versuch zur ökologischen Ebermast Organic Eprints

Die Mast intakter männlicher Tiere stellt eine Alternative zur Ferkelkastration dar. Neben dem Problem des Ebergeruchs, verursacht durch die Leitsubstanzen Skatol und Androstenon, unterscheiden sich Eber in der Mastleistung, der Schlachtkörper- und Fleischqualität. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, zwei verschiedene Endstufeneberherkünfte und zwei verschiedene Fütterungsstrategien im Hinblick auf Mastleistung, Schlachtkörper- und Fleischqualität miteinander zu vergleichen. Versuchsdesign Es werden 6 Fütterungsstrategien geprüft. Diese bestehen aus 3 unterschiedlichen 100%-Bio-Kraftfuttervarianten kombiniert mit 2 Raufuttervarianten (Stroh, Klee-Gras-Silage). The overall discussion of the projects resulted in the following conclusions concerning: Pigs From a biological point of view, 100% organic feeding (with focus on protein/essential amino acid supply) seems to be feasible. It seems to be questionable whether the quantities and qualities of the required feeding stuffs are available at present and in the near future if only regional till EC-wide origin is aimed. Prolonged suckling period in organic piglet production – effects on selected immunological parameters Organic Eprints

During weaning, piglets are under strain from the loss of their dam, the change in feed, and a new microbiological environment. How much this strain influences the piglets depends mostly on their immune system. Piglets from organic production are weaned later (at least 40 days) than piglets from conventional rearing, but the performance and health status of organic piglets are often not satisfying. Therefore, it was the aim to investigate whether a prolonged suckling period of 63 days results in better immune status of piglets than with weaning at day 42. Due to the minimum requirement of the EEC Regulation 2092/91 of 40 days organic piglet suckling period typically takes about 6 weeks. But piglets weaned in such a way are often characterized by inferior performance and health status. Therefore a study with a control group (42 days suckling period) and a test group (63 days suckling period) of 18 sows each should clarify whether an extended suckling period and therefore older piglets result in better performance and health status of the piglets. The suitability of indigenous or modern genotypes for organic conditions and the necessity of a specific organic breeding programme are intensively discussed in the organic pig fattening scene. To clarify both items information about Genotype-Environment-Interaction (GEI) is necessary. Therefore 682 pigs of 7 different genotypes with widely spread protein synthesis capacity were tested for growth performance and carcass quality under conventional and organic environments at two performance testing stations in order to verify GEI.
