Tandem Repeats (TR) are sequences where the same pattern repeats consecutively. They have been used as genomic markers (microsatellite and minisatéllite) since the begining of the genomic era. Recently, new studies have associated TR to important regulatory processes which substantialy increased the interest in TR. The exponential reduction cost of sequencing caused by the new technologies, resulted in the proliferation of genome projects, and particularly of novel model organisms. Very often, the first sequence analysis is the identification of genetic markers such as SNPs and TRs. Effect of mutations on the stability of proteins is a crucial issue in protein evolution. Such effects depend strongly on the overall hydrophobic protein character. In a recent work we suggested two scenarios for folding with distinct protein evolution consequences [1]. Under low hydrophobic conditions, proteins collapse concomitantly with the formation of their native state, and are less robust to mutations. This feature implies higher homology among proteins of different species. On the other limit, at high hydrophobicity, proteins collapse before folding, and this case they are more susceptible to mutations, suggesting lower homology among proteins of different species. The tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) transcriptome at sex differentiation stage. Repositório Alice

As females of tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) are heavier than males at harvest, farming all-female populations would be more profitable. Unraveling the genetic and physiological mechanisms involved in sex determination and sex differentiation is then a fundamental objective in order to achieve sex control in this species. Therefore, we produced and assembled individual transcriptome libraries of juveniles sampled just prior to the gonadal sex differentiation in order to identify genes putatively related to testicular or ovarian differentiation in tambaqui.
