Abstract: This study checked the effectiveness of ranking the difficulty to clip/traction and traverse the cervix with the Hegar dilator as a predictor method for selecting suitable animals to undergo NSER. A total of 46 pluriparous Santa Inês received intravaginal sponges containing 60 mg medroxyprogesterone (Progespon®, Syntex, Buenos Aires, Argentina) during six days plus 200 IU eCG (Novormon 5000®, Syntex, Buenos Aires, Argentina) i.m. and 37.5 ?g d-cloprostenol (Prolise®, ARSA S.R.L., Buenos Aires, Argentina) latero-vulvar 24 h before sponge removal. This grading system may indicate the probability of individual animals to successfully proceed with NSER. It is suggested that a selective system for donors should include an attempt to... |

Abstract: The effect of hCG administration on accessory corpus luteum (ACL) formation, CL area, and plasma progesterone (P4) concentration (ng/mL) seven days after breeding was studied in nulliparous Santa Inês sheep. Intravaginal 60 mg MAP sponges were inserted into ewes for six days and 300 IU eCG i.m. and 30 ?g d-cloprostenol latero-vulvar were administered 24 h before sponge removal. Ewes were naturally bred and, seven days after first mating (Day 0; D0), were treated with either 250 IU hCG (hCG group; n = 7) or 1 mL saline solution (control group; n = 7). Blood was collected to determine plasma P4 concentrations and sonograms were performed on Days 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, and 22. Number of CL on D7 was similar (P > 0.05) between hCG (1.3 ± 0.5) and... |

Assisted reproduction has been used to optimize reproduction in goats. Ultrasound technology has resulted in a definite gain of knowledge in terms of ovulation time. The aim of this study was to evaluate if the shift (morning or afternoon) of hormonal administration affects different reproductive parameters. This study was conducted from October to December (nonbreeding season) of 2005, in Piau/MG (21°35?S latitude and 43° 15?W longitude), Brazil. Eighteen nulliparous (n = 9) or pluriparous (n = 9) Toggenburg goats were assigned equally according to body weight and condition score into two treatments. Animals received intravaginal sponges (60 mg of MAP, Progespon®, Syntex, Buenos Aires, Argentina) for 6 days plus 37.5 (igof cloprostenol (Prolise®, ARSA... |

Abstract: Animal surgery procedures are being progressively restricted worldwide in the context of embryo transfer. In small ruminants, the needs for development of alternative and efficient non-surgical techniques for embryo transfer have been emphasized. Non-surgical embryo recovery is well consolidated in Brazil in cattle and goats, while in sheep it remains a challenge. The aim of this study was to check the efficiency of different ways of estradiol benzoate administration on cervix dilation and embryo recovery in synchronized Santa Inês ewes. Considering that Santa Inês sheep have up to 1.3 lambs we can conclude that it is possible to perform efficient non-surgical embryo recovery in non-superovulated synchronized Santa Inês ewes, regardless the way... |

The objective of this study was to evaluate lhe efficiency of two gonadotrophins in induction of estrus in dairy goats. A total of 47 dairy goats were randomly divided according to breed into two treatments (T1 and T2). In both treatments, goats received intravaginal sponges containing 60 mg medroxy-progesterone acetate for six days and sub- vulvar administration of 22.5 mg of d-cloprostenol at the time of sponge insertion. In TI (n=23) and T2 (n=24), animaIs received intramuscuIar administration of 200 lU and 250 lU of eCG and hCG, respectively. After sponge removal, goats were monitored twice daily (06:00 a.m. and 18:00 p.m.) with bucks. Animals were bred at lhe start of estrus and at each 12 hours interval until lhe end of estrus. Pregnancy was checked... |

Abstract: Ewes have certain particularities in the cervical anatomy leading to the commercial use of surgical methods for collecting embryos in this species. However, the literature shows that Non-Surgical Embryo Recovery (NSER) is possible through specific protocols for cervical relaxation (Fonseca et al., 2019. Reprod Fertil Devel, 31:17-26). The cervical ostium may have several classifications: flap, duckbill, rosette, rose, spiral or papilla. This study aimed to assess the influence of cervical ostium anatomy on the difficulty of traversing cervical rings. In conclusion, the current data suggest that the morphology of cervical ostium may have influence on the success of embryo collection by Non-Surgical Embryo Recovery (NSER) technique. [Influência da... |

Oxytocin has been used to promote cervical dilation with the objective to access uterus both in artificial insemination and transcervical embryo recovery in sheep and goats. The objective of this study was to test the effect of two routes of oxytocin administration on nonsurgical embryo recovery efficiency in Santa Inês ewes after induction of synchronous estrus. Results of this study showed that nonsurgical transcervical embryo recovery can be efficiently done in some ewes; a higher number of individuals is needed to conclude that transcervical embryo recovery can be efficiently done in ewes and surgery embryo collections can be avoided in near to 60% of pluriparous Santa Inês ewes; and that the route of oxytocin administration did not affect the... |
