A Lithothamnion bank at Bonaire (Netherlands Antilles) Naturalis
Zaneveld, J.S..
The part certain lime-secreting marine algae play in the building of coral reefs and in the formation of banks was discussed chiefly at the end of the last and in the beginnig of this century. At that time it was already known that extensive parts of the sublittoral zone of the Arctic sea were covered by a luxuriant growth of Lithothamnion species. Kjellman states in 1883 (p. 96) that along the northern coast of Norway Lithothamnion soriferum “covers large spaces of the bottom in great masses”, and that off the shores of Spitsbergen and Nova Zembla in 10 to 20 fathoms of water Lithothamnion glaciale “covers the bottom in deep layers for several miles, and altogether determines the general aspect of the vegetation wherever it occurs”, whereas Lithothamnion...

An historical review of the identification of the Netherlands’ Charophyta Naturalis
Zaneveld, J.S..
In 1938, Verdam published an account of the then-known Charophyta of the Netherlands in the English language (cf. this journal, vol. 3), and one year later (1939) another in our own language in “Nederlandsch Kruidkundig Archief”. In both papers reference was made to only five Netherlands’ publications on the same subject, the oldest of which is dating from 1846. In studying i.a. the history of the Malaysian Charophyta (Zaneveld, 1940) I found that much more was published on the Charophyta of our Low Countries. As will be seen below, it became evident that the first printed record of a Netherlands’ Charophyte dates as far back as 1636. It seems worth while to publish these notes on the history of the identification of our Charophyta as, moreover, a number...

De Kreeften van de Nederlandse Antillen Naturalis
Holthuis, L.B.; Zaneveld, J.S..

Marine Gastrotricha and Kinorhyncha from Scheveningen Naturalis
Zaneveld, J.S..
In the first three months of 1937 some Gastrotricha and Kinorhyncha were collected by the author at the beach of Scheveningen. Up to the present no members of these classes were recorded from this part of the North Sea, and moreover, they are all new for the fauna of the Netherlands. Therefore I summarized the results of the examination in the present paper. During neap tide some sand of the beach was put into glassjars, which were beforehand partially filled with sea water. The sand was taken from the surface of the beach, as near to the water line as possible. As described by Remane (1936, pp. 234—235) the glassjars were put in a quiet spot without aeration for 1—2 weeks. After this time every day a proof was taken with a pipette from the surface of the...

Nitella Madagascariensis, nov. spec., with notes on the Charophyta of Madagascar Naturalis
Zaneveld, J.S..
Our knowledge of the Charophyta of Madagascar is mainly based on the rich and well-prepared collection made by Mr TH. B. BLOW, who visited the eastern central part of the island in the early months of 1924 ¹). The 384 dried specimens and a considerable number of portions of the plants preserved in formalin were determined by the well-known authority on the Charophyta, the late JAMES GROVES, who published the results of his work in the Journal of the Linnean Society (Botany), vol. XLVIII, 1928. This paper contains the descriptions of 5 new species and 3 new varieties of Nitella. Before this basic paper on the Charophyta of Madagascar was published, only very few publications appeared. As far as I know the first Madagascarian species to be recognized was...

Some notes on Charophyta collected in the Netherlands West Indies, North Venezuela and Columbia Naturalis
Zaneveld, J.S..
As far as I know, only three papers are dealing with Charophyta of the Netherlands West Indies. In 1858, in “Monatsbericht der königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Berlin”, BRAUN records two species from Paramaribo, viz. Nitella microcarpa A. BR. and Chara hydropitys REICHENB. ap. MOESSL. These species are also enumerated in the “Fragmente einer Monographie der Characeen” (BRAUN & NORDSTEDT, 1882), in which another species is recorded from Curaçao, viz. Chara gymnopus A. Br. f. curassavica A. BR., now to be named Chara zeylanica Willd. f. curassavica (A. BR.) H. et J. GROVES. The third paper is that of H. and J. GROVES in URBAN’s Symbolae Antillanae (1911), in which the last-named species is once more recorded. In 1930 Mr P. WAGENAAR HUMMELINCK...

The Charophyta of Malaysia and adjacent countries Naturalis
Zaneveld, J.S..
The only hitherto known comprehensive studies on the Netherlands Indian Charophyta appeared in 1897 and 1899 in the ”Prodrome de la Flore Algologique des Indes Neerlandaises“, and were compiled by E. DE WILDEMAN. These papers intend to give a mere enumeration of all Charophyta published up to 1896, and therefore mainly contain the species recorded by the famous Charaphytologists ALEX. BRAUN and OTTO NORDSTEDT in 1849, 1882, 1888 and 1889. In the twentieth century only three papers were published on the Charophyta of this area, viz. that by DE WILDEMAN (1900), that by GUTWINSKY (1902), and that by FILARSZKY (1934). The first-named author worked up the specimens occurring in Java, the second one adds two species to this list, whereas the latter studied...

The Xanthophyceae and Chlorophyceae of the Western Ross Sea, Victoria Land, Antarctica and Macquarie Island collected under the direction of Prof. Dr. J. S. Zaneveld (1963—1967) Naturalis
Wagner, H.P.; Zaneveld, J.S..
During the austral summer seasons of 1963-1964 and 1964-1965, and during the austral winter season of 1967 Prof. Dr. J.S. Zaneveld made collection expeditions to the western Ross Sea. In 1965 collections were also made from the U.S.C.G. icebreaker ‘Glacier’, around the western Ross Sea and around the Balleny Islands. During the same cruise Macquarie Island was visited. Most collecting was carried out by means of scuba-diving. Prof. Zaneveld was accompanied on these expeditions by W.I. Simmonds (1963-1964), J.M. Curtis (1964-1965), J.K. Fletcher (1964- 1965), D.M. Bresnahan (1967), and L.L. Nero (1967), during these periods students at Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Virginia, U.S.A. In the harsh Antarctic environment the algae discussed in the present...
