AGRICULTURAL MARKETS LIBERALIZATION AND THE DOHA ROUND AgEcon

Using a partial equilibrium model of world agriculture, we investigate the multilateral removal of all border taxes and farm programs and their distortion of world agricultural markets. These distortions have significant terms-of-trade effects. World trade is also significantly impacted by both types of distortions. Trade expansion is substantial for most commodities, especially dairy, meats, and vegetable oils. Net agricultural and food exporters (Brazil, Australia, and Argentina) emerge with expanded exports; whereas net importing countries with limited distortions before liberalization are penalized by higher world markets prices and reduced imports. AGRICULTURE AND CLIMATE CHANGE IN THE EU: GREENHOUSE GAS EMISSIONS AND ABATEMENT COSTS AgEcon

This paper addresses the assessment of greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture in the European Union. We first estimate and compare net emissions from agricultural activities in twelve EU countries. These estimates are based on a set of farm-unit linear-programming models. We then use these models to derive marginal and total abatement costs associated with different levels of reduction targets (dual approach) and different values of carbon-equivalent emissions (primal approach). Finally, we explore the possibility of allowing afforestation on set-aside land. This paper highlights the discrepancies between countries regarding abatement costs and their sensitiveness to the accounting for carbon sequestration.

We examine the spatial and dynamic implications of policies aimed at encouraging carbon sequestration in agricultural soils. We consider incentive mechanisms to encourage the planting of energy multi-annual crops that allow higher carbon sequestration rates for a longer period of time. By using a dynamic micro-economic model, we simulate the sequence of crop plantings over a given time horizon and investigate different payment mechanisms (per-ton or per-hectare). We discuss their implications in terms of regulation policy and efficiency. CHINA'S ACCESSION TO THE WORLD TRADE ORGANIZATION: IMPACT ON AGRICULTURAL MARKETS AgEcon

We analyze the impact of China's accession to the WTO on agricultural markets using the FAPRI modeling framework. Our analysis includes major crops, livestock sectors, and exogenous changes in consumer income, expanded textile production, and policies. Chinese livestock, grain and oilseed crushing industries experience lower revenues, while cotton production prospers with accession, despite increased cotton imports. Most food prices decrease with accession. Chinese consumers benefit from these lower prices, with vegetable oil, dairy and meat consumption increasing significantly. China's Accession to the WTO: What Is at Stake for Agricultural Markets? AgEcon

We analyze the impact of China's accession to the World Trade Organization on major crop and livestock markets using the FAPRI modeling framework. We incorporate expected changes in consumer income, textile production, and trade policies as exogenous shocks to the baseline model. Following accession, revenues decline in China's livestock, grain, and oilseed industries, while cotton production prospers despite increased cotton imports. Chinese consumers benefit from lower food prices, with vegetable oil, dairy, and meat consumption increasing significantly. Argentina, Brazil, Canada, the European Union, and the United States are the greatest beneficiaries from expanded agricultural trade with China.

Economic analysis of summer fallow management to reduce take-all disease and N-leaching in a wheat crop rotation AgEcon

This paper addresses the question of summer cover crop adoption by farmers in presence of a risk of yield loss due to take-all disease and climate variability. To analyse the public incentives needed to encourage farmers to adopt summer cover crops as a means of reducing N leaching, we combine outputs from an economic, an epidemiological and an agronomic model. The economic model is a simple model of choice under uncertainty. The farmer is assumed to choose among a range of summer fallow managements and input uses on the basis of the expected utility criterion (HARA assumption) in presence of both climate and take all risks. Feeding the Cities and Greenhouse Gas Emissions - Beyond the Food Miles Approach AgEcon

In this paper, we study the impact of urbanization on the location of agricultural production and the GHG emissions related to transportation activities. We develop an economic geography model where the location of agricultural activities and urban population are endogenous. We show that increasing agricultural yields induce the spatial concentration of agricultural production in the least urbanized region if agricultural transport costs are relatively low and in the most urbanized region otherwise. In addition, interregional trade in agricultural commodities is desirable to reduce GHG emissions, except when urban population is equally split between cities. Greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture in the EU: A spatial assessment of sources and abatement costs AgEcon

Agriculture contributes significantly to the emissions of greenhouse gases in the EU. By using a farm-type, linear-programming based model of the European agricultural supply, we first assess the initial levels of methane and nitrous oxide emissions at the regional level in the EU. For a range of CO2 prices, we assess the potential abatement that can be achieved through an IPCC-based emission tax in EU agriculture, as well as the resulting optimal mix of emission sources in the total abatement. Further, we show that the spatial variability of the abatement actually achieved at a given carbon price is large, indicating that abatement cost heterogeneity is a fundamental feature in the design of a mitigation policy.
