At the request of the United States of America Centre for Marine Conservation, the Nigeria Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research organised a beach clean up at the Bar Beach Lagos on September 24 1994. An International beach clean up is usually held on the last Saturday of every September during the COASTWEEK. On this day, volunteers all over the world participate in a beach clean up in an effort to collect data and information on the types and amounts of debri littering the world's beaches. Volunteers for the Bar Beach clean up of 1994 were drawn from all works of life and some Federal and States agencies. A total of 10,872 pieces of different kinds of debri weighing 531.1kg were collected during the clean up. Further analysis of the different... |

On 10-12 June 2008, the NOAA Climate Observation Division sponsored the 2nd Joint Global Ocean Surface Underway Data (GOSUD)/Shipboard Automated Meteorological and Oceanographic System (SAMOS) Workshop in Seattle, WA, USA. The workshop focused on the ongoing collaboration between GOSUD and SAMOS and addressing the needs of the research and operational community for highquality underway oceanographic and meteorological observations from ships. The SAMOS initiative is working to improve access to calibrated, quality-controlled, surface marine meteorological data collected in-situ by automated instrumentation on research vessels (primarily) and select merchant ships. GOSUD is an IODE project which focuses on the collection, quality evaluation, and... |

Renewable natural resources (RNR) are a major source of socio-economic development potential in all developing countries, if they can be conserved, developed and sustainably exploited. For strategic conservation and sustainable exploitation strategies to be implemented, a knowledge of biodiversity at various levels within these RNR has to be investigated and documented in an internationally accepted manner, and preferably as close as possible to the habitat of the resources. However, human and material resources available in developing countries are currently neither sufficiently trained nor sufficient to undertake the appropriate studies. Meanwhile, various forces continue to deplete RNR and their inherent biodiversity. An attractive approach towards... |

The cooperative versus non-cooperative management of the South African west coast hake stock is explored using game theoretic modelling in conjunction with an age-structured model. The age-structured model is used to produce a physical flow account for input into national resource accounts. Between 1989 and 1998, the average catch of hake on the west coast was 92000 tons, most of which was harvested by the demersal trawl sector. The physical flow account indicates that the conservative re-building management strategy pursued for the fishery over the same time period mentioned above, has resulted in a 29% increase in the demersal trawl catch over the last decade. We simulated the effects of alternative quota restrictions on two fishing sectors (the... |

The coastline of Eastern Africa is an area of great physical beauty, rich in living resources. Palm fringed beaches of white coral sand lead down to tranquil lagoons enclosed by spectacular coral reefs with their wealth of colourful fish, shells and corals. The area has vast mangrove forests, high coral cliffs, wide stretches of sand dunes, and numerous offshore and oceanic islands. Yet there are problems in paradise-pollution, habitat destruction, and the pressures of growing populations and tourism. To face these common threats to their marine environment, the nine nations of the region are now working together to manage their shared resources and to find regional solutions to their problems. They are doing this under the auspices of the Eastern African... |

Collections of fishes from demersal trawl surveys to 800 m depth off the Angolan coast in 2001, 2002 and 2005 resulted in several range extensions tabulated here. Specimens of species poorly represented in previous collections allowed improved diagnoses of Myxine ios, Torpedo bauchotae, Dysommina rugosa, Pisodonophis semicinctus, Xenomystax congroides, Lestidiops cadenati, Ophidion lozanoi, Cataetyx bruuni, Dibranchus atlanticus, Diceratias pileatus, Himantolophus paucifilosus, Neomerinthe folgori, Careproctus albescens, Paracaristius maderensis and Pachycara crossacanthum. All specimens accessioned into the Fish Collection of the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity are listed and colour plates show a selection of species from the trawl catches |

Time-series of condition factor (CF) and gonadosomatic index (GSI) were generated using general linear models (GLM) for sardine Sardinops sagax stocks in the northern and southern Benguela ecosystems over the period 1984–1999. During this period the biomass of sardine in the northern Benguela remained at relatively low levels of <500 000 tons, whereas that of southern Benguela sardine increased 40-fold to 1.3 million tons. The GLMs explained 27 and 45% of the observed variation in CF, and 32 and 28% of the observed variation in GSI, for sardine in the northern and southern Benguela subsystems respectively. Whereas the sardine CF in the northern Benguela remained stable over time, that for the southern Benguela stock declined steadily during the study... |

Foreign fishing fleets drastically overfished the waters off Namibia before that country gained independence in 1990, according to Paul Nichols, Special Adviser to the Namibian Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources. Since then, the Government has taken strong regulatory actions that have brought overfishing under control and allowed depleted fish stocks to rebuild while gaining strong support for the policy among Namibia's commercial fishers. |

User involvement in fisheries management has been around for some time, but few analytical papers have been published on the subject in Africa. Most of these initiatives fall under the rubric of co-management. But what is the concept of co-management in theory and how does it work in practice? In reviewing a comprehensive artisanal fisheries development project, we will attempt to answer this question in the context of The Gambia. |
