3D Print of the Maxillary Sinus for Morphological Study 77
Araneda,Nadia; Parra,Marcelo; Valdivia Osorio,José; Olate,Sergio.
The maxillary sinus (MS) is described as a pyramid-shaped cavity of the maxilla. Knowledge of its morphology makes it possible to define normality and abnormality so that its three-dimensional analysis can be a valuable preoperative tool during surgery in this anatomical area. The aim of this study is to present a strategy of morphological analysis of the MS using 3D printing acquired through computed cone beam tomography (CBCT) images. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted, including 15 subjects (8 women and 7 men). The 3D virtual reconstruction and modeling was done on the MSs bilaterally, and 30 physical models were produced on a 3D printer. The results revealed that the MSs obtained exhibited various morphologies. An individual analysis of...

A Brief Review on the History, Methods and Applications of Plastination 77
Pashaei,Shahyar.
Plastination is a process of preservation of anatomical specimens by a delicate method of forced impregnation with curable polymers like silicone, epoxy or polyester resins with vast applications in medical fields of study. Plastination is a technique of tissue preservation developed by Dr. Gunther von Hagens in 1977. In this process, water and lipids in biological tissues are replaced by curable polymers (silicone, epoxy, polyester) which are hardened, resulting in dry, odorless and durable specimens. In this technique it is possible for us to treat every part of the body and tissues to preserve it for educational purposes. Nowadays there are new and vast varieties of applications for plastination in the educational and cultural areas. This invention has...

A Case of Anomalous Horizontal Fissure and Hypoplastic Middle Lobe of the Right Lung 77
Okamoto,Keishi; Wakebe,Tetsuaki; Saiki,Kazunobu; Manabe,Yoshitaka; Tsurumoto,Toshiyuki.
During dissection practice for medical students at Nagasaki University, a horizontal fissure and hypoplastic middle lobe were encountered in the right lung of an 81-year-old Japanese female. In a normal right lung, the horizontal fissure is situated anterior to the oblique fissure. On the contrary, in the present case, the horizontal fissure was situated posterior to the oblique fissure. We identified a small, additional lobe on the medial surface of this lung. It was situated in the medial part of the oblique fissure, and was determined to be a small hypoplastic middle lobe. As a result of the hypoplasia of the middle lobe, the original horizontal fissure may have disappeared from the anterior surface. The horizontal fissure, in this case, may be a...

A Case of Unilateral Fenestration and Duplication of the External Jugular Vein 77
Snoj,Ziga; Cvetko,Erika.
The external jugular vein is increasingly being utilized as the recipient vein in head and neck free tissue transfers, and for cannulation in order to conduct diagnostic procedures or intravenous therapies. The variations in the patterns of its course, and knowledge of them, are therefore important. We report on a unique and previously non-described unilateral fenestration and duplication of the external jugular vein found during the neck dissection of a 77-year-old female cadaver. Embryological evaluation and clinical implications of the anomaly are described. Clinicians and surgeons performing neck vascular or reconstructive surgery should be aware of this variation of the external jugular vein in the hope of preventing...

A Case of Unusual Anatomy: Maxillary Central Incisor with Two Root Canals 77
Rodrigues,Evaldo Almeida; Silva,Sílvio José Albergaria da.
Success in root canal treatment is achieved after thorough cleaning and shaping followed by complete obturation of the canal system. Therefore, endodontic therapy requires specific and complete knowledge of the internal and external dental anatomy, and its variations in presentation. Such treatment may be performed in root canal systems that do not comply with the normal anatomical features described in standard textbooks. The internal anatomy of the maxillary central incisor is well known and usually presents one root canal system. This case report describes an endodontic retreatment of a maxillary central incisor with two canal systems.

A Classic Case of Annular Pancreas and its Clinical Implications 77
Nayak B,Satheesha; Mun Yooi,Ooi.
Annular pancreas is a rare developmental anomaly where the head of the pancreas surrounds the second part of the duodenum like a ring. This may cause the duodenal constriction, obstruction, peptic ulcers and other complications. We saw a classic case of annular pancreas. The head of pancreas surrounded the second part of duodenum completely. However there was no narrowing of the duodenum. The case may be of importance for gastroenterologists, surgeons and radiologists.

A Communicating Branch between the Dorsal and Superficial Ramus of the Ulnar Nerve (Kaplan's Anastomosis): Clinical and Surgery Discussion 77
Torre,F; Erthal,R; Fernandes,R. M. P; Babinski,M. A; Cisne,R.
The Kaplan´s anastomosis represents the communication between the dorsal and superficial branch of the ulnar nerve distal to ulnar canal. In the present study, a case about this nerve communication, found in a male adult cadaver, is reported. Information about brachial plexus distal anastomosis is fundamental for interpretation of clinical and electrophysiological findings, in order to establish the precise diagnosis of neurological lesions at this level. Its relations with flexor carpi ulnaris muscle's tendon and with pisiform bone exposes it to iatrogenic lesions during surgery.

A Comparative Study of Fixatives for Axolotl Blastema Tissue 77
Keskin,Ilknur; Yildirim,Berna; Kolbasi,Bircan; Öztürk,Gürkan; Demircan,Turan.
Regeneration is defined as tissue renewal and functional restoration process of the damaged parts of the body after an injury. Ambystoma mexicanum, commonly named the Axolotl, is one of the unique vertebrates, which has a remarkable ability to regenerate their extremities following the amputation. Although the process of regeneration includes several periods, it can be divided into two main phases; blastema formation and dedifferentiation. In the couple of hours following the amputation, wound closure occurs by migration of epithelial cells around the amputation site followed by macrophage infiltration and dedifferentiation of cells to turn into stem cells. Accumulated stem cells form a very authentic tissue type called blastema, which is crucial for...

A Comparative Study of Variation of the Pterion of Human Skulls from 13th and 20th Century Anatolia 77
Ilknur,Ari; Mustafa,Kafa Ilker; Sinan,Bakirci.
The pterion is a commonly used anthropologic and neurosurgical landmark defined as the junction of the sphenoid, temporal, parietal and frontal bones. It is commonly classified into four types based on sutural pattern: sphenoparietal, in which the sphenoid and parietal bones are in direct contact; frontotemporal, in which the frontal and temporal bones are in direct contact; stellate, in which all four bones come into contact at a point; and epipteric, in which a small sutural bone is found between the parietal bone and the greater wing of the sphenoid bone. In the present study, 44 Anatolian skulls from two different eras, Byzantine (13th century) and contemporary (20th century), were investigated for morphology and location of the pterion. A Comparison of the Effect of Chlorhexidine, Tap Water and Normal Saline on Healing Wounds 77
Salami,Ayodeji A; Imosemi,Innocent O; Owoeye,Olatunde O.
Many researchers have advocated in recent times that antiseptic use in healing wounds should be discouraged. Antiseptics have been found to retard healing of wounds. Innocuous solutions like normal saline and tap water are being considered as better alternatives to antiseptics. Chlorhexidine, a commonly used antiseptic, is known to be less toxic on granulation cells. We decided to compare the effect of chlorhexidine, normal saline and tap water on healing wounds. Three groups of wistar rats had 2 by 2cm full thickness wounds made on their right dorsolateral flanks. The wounds were dressed with either chlorhexidine, normal saline or tap water. Wounds were examined at three-day intervals and measurements of area covered were taken on the first day of study...
