This report documents a case of a melanic specimen of Crotalus durissus terrificus (Laurenti, 1768) found in Bofete, São Paulo State, Brazil. The authors describe this melanic snake, determine the electrophoretic pattern of its venom, and compare the venom of this specimen against that of normal Crotalus durissus terrificus. This report is very important because melanism is a rare chromatic anomaly |

In Costa Rica, approximately 700 snakebite cases occur each year, 5 to 10 of which result in death. At the Hospital Nacional de Niños (HNN), 6 to 10 cases are reported annually, more than half of these cases and nearly all deaths are result from Bothrops asper snakebite. This venomous snake, popularly known as the "terciopelo", most often attacks the lower or upper limbs and characteristically produces local tissue damage, which can be severe. The following is a report of the first case of a non-fatal and unusual facial bite caused by Bothrops asper in our country. |

The effect of intramuscular (IM) injection of a sub-lethal dose of Naja haje cobra venom (0.015 mug/gm body weight) on the ultrastructure of renal cortical tissues of rabbits was studied at different time intervals after envenomation. Succinic dehydrogenase (SDH) enzyme activity was also detected in the renal cortical tubules. Three hours after venom injection, slight changes were seen in visceral cells and glomerular endothelia. The cortical tubular epithelia revealed an increase of lysosomal structures, cytoplasmic vacuolization, and nuclear irregularity. Severe ultrastructural changes were recorded 6 hours after envenomation, including hypertrophied parietal cells, blebbed visceral epithelial cells, and foot process disorganization. Dilated glomerular... |

Thirty-one patients bitten by venomous snakes in Botucatu area (State of São Paulo - Brazil), sixteen by Bothrops spp. and fifteen by Crotalus durissus terrificus, were studied. The group comprised twenty-nine males and two females, ranging from fourteen to sixty-three years of age (mean 33 ± 15). Leukocytosis with neutrophilia and lymphopenia, increase of mucoproteins and C-reactive protein, decrease of total serum protein and albumin, were observed on the first day after the accident. In addition, increased serum levels of the cytokines IL-6 and IL-8, but not of IL-1b and TNF-a, were observed. The alterations were generally more intense in patients bitten by Crotalus durissus... |

Field bioassays were used to demonstrate that aggressive behavior of Polybia paulista (Ihering) workers is elicited by alarm pheromones present in the venom reservoirs of nest defenders and that the brood care pheromone (pupal odor) produced by the young inside the nest also plays an important defensive role. Pupal odor was extracted from the surface of pupa bodies with methanol. When bioassayed alone, the pupal odor elicited only attractiveness of workers towards the odor source, but no stinging attacks were observed. However, in the presence of alarm pheromones, the brood care pheromone potentiated the effect caused by the pupal odors, increasing the number of stinging attacks during an action of colony defense. Thus, the presence of pupae within the... |

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of fibrin adhesive made up of snake venom and bubaline fibrinogen by rat colon anastomosis. Eighty rats were randomly assigned into 2 experimental groups: GI control (anastomosis with extramucous interrupted suture) and GII (repair suture + fibrin glue). The animals were studied at the following 4 times: T0 preoperative, T1 7th day postoperative, T2 14th day postoperative, and T3 21 st day postoperative. The macroscopic characteristics of the intestinal segment open and closed anastomosis and the bursting strength of the anastomosed segments were observed at each of the above times. The results showed that the anastomosed segments coapted and there was no difference in the bursting strength... |
