In 1904 Eugène Dubois published the first report on fossil mammals from the vicinity of Tegelen. After a century of research the clay-pits from the area are known as a classical locality for Villafranchian mammals. Antje Schreuder's work was particularly important for making the fossils from Tegelen known. Her papers, however, also indicate some problems. The large mammal fossils were gathered by clay-workers in the local ceramic industry, and the fragmentary nature of the fossils is partly caused by injudicious handling while extracting the bones from the clay. Because the Tegelen fossils are chance finds rather than the results of careful excavations, their exact provenance is not established. An investigation was made into the systematics of white-toothed shrews (Crocidura) occurring in Malaya and Indonesia. Most of the forms recorded from this area have been found to represent one of four species: C. fuliginosa (Blyth, 1855), C. attenuata Milne-Edwards, 1872, C. maxi Sody, 1936 or C. monticola Peters, 1870, while the status of a few others remains unresolved at this stage. Each species is discussed and distinguishing features are given in tabular form. |

In 1944 Miss Dr. A. Schreuder sent me for identification a fossil horncore, which according to the accompanying letter came from a well-boring near Grubbenvorst (province of Limburg). It was found in a coarse sandy layer with gravel at a depth of 61.50 m below the surface; the topographic height of the latter is given as 24.53 m + N.A.P. (N.A.P. = sea-level at Amsterdam). Dr. J. F. Steenhuis, geologist to the Government Geological Foundation, informed me that deep borings for the water-supply of Central-Limburg have been made in the years 1918, 1919, and 1922 S. and S.E. of Grubbenvorst. The genus Celebochoerus was based by me (Hooijer, 1948) on two fragments of upper canines of rather large size, different from their homologues in Sus celebensis Müller and Babyrousa babyrussa (L.), the two living species of Suidae of Celebes. The specimens originate from Pleistocene deposits at Desa Beru, Tjabenge (Sopeng district), about 100 km N.E. of Macassar, S. Celebes, and were collected by Mr. H. R. van Heekeren, prehistorian to the Archaeological Survey at Macassar. In the meantime I have received more specimens of upper canines, collected by Mr. Van Heekeren at Desa Beru and also at Sompoh, 12 km N. of Beru. Myonycteris relicta n. sp. is described from the Shimba Hills in southeast Kenya and from the Usambara Mountains in northeast Tanzania. The species is larger than the only other known African mainland species of the genus, Myonycteris torquata (Dobson, 1878), from the Central and West African rain forests and, if compared to M. torquata and the only other species in the genus, M. brachycephala (Bocage, 1889) from São Tomé, has a relatively longer rostrum, a more deflected cranial axis, and further differs in number, shape and position of its teeth. A new species of the murid Hydromys is named and described, based on skins, skulls and denti tions. The sample comes from the Wissel Lakes region in the Indonesian half of New Guinea (Irian Jaya). In many features, the new species is a miniature version of Hydromys chrysogaster and may be more closely related to that large water rat than to H. habbema. Nothing is known about habits or habitat of the new rat, and it has not yet been collected elsewhere in Irian Jaya or in the eastern half of New Guinea (Papua). |

The genus and species Turkanatherium acutirostratus was proposed by Deraniyagala (1951) for a skull, without the mandible, collected by Dr. H. B. S. Cooke, a member of the Wendell-Phillips Expedition to Africa in 1948, at Moruaret Hill (or Moruorot) near Losodok (or Lothidok) in the Turkana district, Kenya. The holotype is in the Colombo Museum, Ceylon. Dr. Deraniyagala has had the courtesy to send me a series of good photographs of the specimen to supplement his own descriptions and published figures, for which I am very grateful. The material to be described below forms part of a collection of fossil vertebrates made by Dr. J. Cosijn North of Djetis and Perning in Eastern Java (Cosijn, 1931, 1932). The Cosijn collection has not yet been fully described, some preliminary identifications were made by the late Prof. Dr. J. H. F. Umbgrove (in Cosijn, 1931, pp. 118-119). The collection is preserved in the Geological Museum at Leiden ; I have previously described the remains of rhinoceros (Hooijer, 1946, pp. 3, 55, 73, and 76) and those of hippopotamus (Hooijer, 1950, pp. 66, 69-72, and 87-108). Re-examination of a collection of bats from Surinam in the Zoölogisch Museum, Amsterdam, uncovered a specimen representing the Phyllostomatid bat Chiroderma trinitatum Goodwin, 1958. This species does not appear in the monograph of the Chiroptera of Surinam by Husson (1962), nor in his more recent works on the mammals of that country (1973; 1978). The present specimen therefore seems to be the first record from Surinam. It is a young adult female, captured after it had flown into a house at night on 1-II-1967, by H. Nijssen at Ligorio, a village on the river Gran Rio about 16 km southwest of Djoemoe in the Brokopondo District. A number of Australian rodent specimens are listed by Jentink (1887; 1888) in two catalogues of the mammals in the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden, Netherlands. The 1887 catalogue deals with the osteological material; in it, thirteen Australian rodent skulls are recorded. The 1888 catalogue contains the mounted and spirit specimens; the Australian rodents are represented here by thirty-three mounted specimens, of which ten have the skulls listed in the 1887 catalogue, and three spirit specimens with the skulls not extracted. The mode of preservation of a further specimen, now a mounted skin, is not indicated. It too had the skull in place; therefore, there are three skulls for which no skins are listed. Some time ago Mr. J. van Rijn van Alkemade, the Hague, presented to the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie a most remarkable double tusk of a Sumatran elephant. Mr. Van Rijn van Alkemade could provide us with the following particulars about the specimen. It was shot in the residency of Palembang before 1906 and the above mentioned double tusk was presented to his father at that time Resident of Palembang. The elephant was a four tusker, the other double tusk, which was of a corresponding shape as the one presented to the Museum, came into the hands of a Chinese dealer. SYNOPSIS A rhinoceros from the Fort Ternan site, Kenya, Late Miocene in age, represents a form distinctly more advanced than the genera and species known from the Early Miocene although it is not directly ancestral to the Quaternary forms. It is a collaterally developed tuskless, two-horned, browsing species from the same ancestral stock as the modern Diceros bicornis (L.), and it is named Paradiceros mukirii. This is the first rhinocerotid filling the gap between the African Early Miocene and the Pleistocene rhinocerotids. Through the courtesy of Dr. L. S. B. Measurements of many hundreds of the high-crowned cheek teeth of Hystrix specimens from the Euro-Asiatic Pleistocene in the collections of European and Asiatic institutions have been compared with extant species for a revision of the genus. The critically endangered yellow-tailed woolly monkey (Oreonax flavicauda) is endemic to the cloud forests of north-eastern Peru and one of the least studied of all primate species. We conducted fifteen months of group follows using focal animal sampling techniques to gather the first behavioural data on free ranging O. flavicauda. Group follows took place in an area of disturbed primary and regenerating secondary forest near the village of La Esperanza, Amazonas department. The purpose of the present paper is to place on record data on fossil Rhinocerotidae from Africa not included in earlier papers. Material has turned up in Africa in great quantities over the last decade, much from beautifully calibrated sequences especially in Ethiopia and the Baringo area of Kenya. Dreary descriptions of fossil teeth and bones are simply a prerequisite to construct, as is my aim, a sort of phylogeny of the rhinoceroses of Africa comparable to those long established for Europe or America. We have at this moment seven genera and a dozen or so species of Rhinocerotidae from the Neogene and the Quaternary, which will be dealt with below.
