Acidity, biodegradability and solids limitations in an anaerobic reactor fed with aromatic acids as COD source IRD

The Terephtalic acid effluents are considered as a difficult to treat stream and this aromatic acid itself has been reported as inhibitory to anaerobic sludge activity. Usually the difficulty is overcome by the use of special reactor designs and/or neutralization reagents. In this work, we focus on clarify the real limitations for anaerobic treatment imposed by acidity, solubility, and biodegradability restrictions. Our findings indicate the treatment is not straightforward but possible, particularly if some considerations are taken. The critical control parameters are the reactor pH, and operate at or above a minimum percentage of COD removal. The organic acid solubility is not a limitation. (Résumé d'auteur)

Anaerobic-aerobic treatment of dairy wastewater with national technology in Mexico : the case of "El Sauz" IRD

A short term solution for the treatment of dairy waste water is discussed. Discharge rate is 500 m3/day with a high organic load (2,750 kg COD/day). Low capital investment (US $ 330,000) and operational (US $ 0.55/m3) costs were required which ought to be competitive with current market prices but within the official environmental norms imposed by the national agency SEDESOL. The problem was solved by remodelling existing lagooning facilities which were operating below the official norm. Local technology was used with the exception of aeration equipment. The system was made of a clarifier, an anaerobic lagoon, an intermediate aerobic lagoon and an effluent polishing lagoon with water hyacinth. Anaerobiosis and low specific growth rates enhance hemolysin BL production by Bacillus cereus F4430/73 Inra

Bacillus cereus F4430/73 produced the highest levels of hemolysin BL (HBL) when grown under anaerobiosis in MOD medium. Anaerobic cells grown in a chemostat at low specific growth rate (0.1–0.2 h–1) expressed up to sevenfold more HBL than did cells held at a faster growth rate. At 0.2 h–1, the presence of 90 mM glucose resulted in inhibition of HBL production. Glucose was found to repress HBL induction at the mRNA level, indicating the potential involvement of catabolite repression in the regulation of HBL. Based on these data, it is suggested that growth rate could be an effector of catabolite regulation of HBL.

Contribution à l'étude de la microflore hétérotrophe de termites supérieurs à régimes alimentaires différenciés IRD

Un dénombrement de la microflore hétérotrophe du tractus digestif d'un termite supérieur xylophage, #Nasutitermes arborum$, a montré que ce termite possède une flore de 10 puissance 9 bactéries/tube digestif; cette microflore est principalement composée de bactéries fermentatives (68 %). La population anaérobie stricte ne constitue que 10 % de la microflore totale et les bactéries méthanogènes 1 %. La mesure de l'émission comparée de méthane, chez 3 espèces, a montré une différence significative selon les régimes alimentaires; ce sont les termites humivores qui se révèlent les plus méthanogènes. Chez #Cubitermes$ sp., espèce humivore, un essai de biodégradation de monomères aromatiques caractéristiques de la ligninolyse a permis de révéler une microflore...
