Analysis of historical data including coastal and open ocean data provides a quantitative description of the characteristics of the sea surface annual signal and of the interannual anomalies in the Eastern Equatorial Atlantic ocean. The annual signal has a larger amplitude than the interannual anomalies but has considerable spatial variations. In two regions, namely the Northern coast of the Gulf of Guinea and the equator, both annual and interannual variability are particularly large because of a seasonal surfacing of the thermocline. Eastward advection of warm water by the countercurrent system, local rain and runoff of great rivers could contribute significantly to the seasonal and interannual STT variability. Interannual anomalies have alarge spatial... |

An analysis of sea-surface temperature (STT) and surface winds in selected areas of the Tropical Atlantic indicates that the nonseasonal variability of SST in the Eastern Equatorial Atlantic (Gulf of Guinea) is highly correlated with the nonseasonal variability of the zonal wind stress in the Western Equatorial Atlantic. A negative (positive) anomaly of the zonal wind stress near the North Brazilian coast is followed by a positive (negative) SST anomaly in the Gulf of Guinea about one month later. Furthermore, the correlation betweenthe local winds stress anomaly and STT anomaly in the Gulf of Guinea is considerably smaller. These preliminary results indicate that remote forcing in the Western Equatorial Atlantic ocean is an important factor affecting the... |

The Southern Oscillation is known to have a significant effect on New Zealand weather. In general, during the negative (El Nino) phase of the Oscillation, New Zealand experiences an increased frequency of cold southwesterly airstreams that result in more rain in the Southwest of the country, and dry conditions in the North and East. During the positive (La Nina) phase, there is a tendency for increased cyclonic activity in the North Tasman and more slow-moving or blocking anticyclones to the southeast of New Zealand. This results in frequent warm moist northerly or northeasterly airstreams over the country, with warmer than normal temperatures nation wide and wetter conditions in parts of the North Island exposed to these prevailing winds. The pressure... |
