Abiotic environmental conditions for germination and development of gametophytes of Cyathea phalerata Mart. (Cyatheaceae) Acta Botanica
Marcon,Catiuscia; Silveira,Tatieli; Schmitt,Jairo Lizandro; Droste,Annette.
ABSTRACT In order to successfully establish themselves in their natural environment, ferns need habitats with abiotic conditions that are suitable for spore germination and gametophyte development. The objective of this study was to assess the influence of abiotic factors on the initial development of Cyathea phalerata cultivated in vitro. Spore germination and gametophyte development were assessed under varying conditions of surface sterilization, pH, temperature and photoperiod. Exogenous contamination was eliminated by sterilizing spores with 2.5 % NaClO for 15 min and sowing them into a culture medium supplemented with nystatin. Spores germinated at all pHs tested. Gametophytic development was faster in acidic pHs. Cultures at 25 °C exhibited the...

Oliveira,Leandro Gonçalves; Bispo,Pitágoras da Conceição; Sá,Nívia Custódio de.
Relationships among some abiotic factors (temperature, velocity, flow, conductivity, oxy-reduction potential and pH) and the seazonal density of benthic insects (immature forms) of the orders Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera at the Parque Ecológico de Goiânia, Goiás are studied. An area of 1m² was sampled and abiotic factors were recorded in 4 sites from August/1994 to July/1995. The faunistic composition was 75% Ephemeroptera, 1% Plecoptera and 24% Trichoptera. The data suggest the water velocity and flow as the main factors that determined the aquatic insects abundance.

Alves, Luis Henrique Soares; Cassino, Paulo Cesar Rodrigues; Prezoto, Fábio.
Knowledge on the foraging activity of Apis mellifera under the influence of abiotic factors has not been fully elucidated. Knowing the interactions between bees and plants with beekeeping relevance is fundamental to develop management strategies aimed at improving the beekeeping productivity. In this way, this study aimed to determine the foraging schedule of A. mellifera and to assess the influence of environmental factors on the foraging on inflorescences of Vernonia polyanthes. The study was conducted in the rural area of Valença, Rio de Janeiro State. Visits of A. mellifera workers to V. polyanthes inflorescences occurred from 9 am to 4 pm, especially between 11 am and 3 pm. Among the abiotic variables, relative humidity (rs = -0.691; p < 0.0001)...

Endogenous versus exogenous factors: What matters for vent mussel communities? ArchiMer
Sarrazin, Jozee; Portail, Marie; Legrand, E.; Cathalot, Cecile; Laes, Agathe; Lahaye, Noe; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Husson, Berengere.
The factors influencing the structure of hydrothermal communities are not necessarily similar across geographical regions and vent fields. In the present study, we explore the role of environmental conditions on vent community structure at local and regional spatial scales, focusing on the assemblages dominated by the engineer species Bathymodiolus azoricus. Their presence in several vent fields on the northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) represents a unique opportunity to compare their associated fauna and to better understand large-scale biodiversity patterns. Two types of factors were considered: exogenous ones such as the presence of biogeographical barriers, depth, and distance between sites, and those linked to the intrinsic characteristics of each...

Evaluation of biomarkers in oyster larvae in natural and polluted conditions ArchiMer
Damiens, Gautier; His, Edouard; Gnassia Barelli, Mauricette; Quiniou, Francoise; Romeo, Michèle.
Crassostrea gigas D-shaped larvae were subjected to different conditions of temperature and salinity for 24 h and four biomarkers (acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) levels, glutathione S-transferase (GST) and catalase (CAT) activities) were measured. AChE activity decreased when salinity increased from 25 to 30 and 35 psu at 20 and 25 degreesC. Temperature did not seem to have an influence on AChE activity. TBARS levels increased as a function of salinity when the temperature was maintained at 20 degreesC, whereas at 25 degreesC no effect of salinity could be observed. Variations in GST and CAT activities were not significant with salinity and temperature except that catalase activity was higher at 25...

Het 'bijzondere' van de Schelde: de abiotiek van het Schelde-estuarium OMA
Van Damme, S.; De Winder, B.; Ysebaert, T.J.; Meire, P..
The Scheldt estuary is a vast ecosystem in which powerful natural forces prevail. Tidal action is a key element in the functioning of the estuary. The combination of tide and discharge results in a salinity gradient that is characterized by strong variations in the brackish part. The estuary is a highly turbidsystem. The load of suspended solids is determined by acomplex mix of factors. The dynamic interactions of the physicochemical and morphological parameters lead to a range of various habitats, with highly fluctuating conditions. This, together with the very heavy human impact, both morphological and chemical makes the estuary a very stressed environment in which the survival of plants and animals requires special adaptations.

The factors involved in the induction of resting eggs development and hatching are poorly understood for Brachionus calyciflorus populations of South Hemisphere. The role of some abiotic factors in controlling the hatching rates of B. calyciflorus resting eggs was investigated. Determination of optimum hatching conditions would be important in developing the use of this species as food for fish larvae in aquaculture. Resting eggs were exposed to different treatments in the laboratory, and monitored for hatching over a period of five days. Optimum hatching conditions were: pH 5-9, water ionic concentrations from 220 to 880 mg.l-1 of selected salts, temperature 25 - 30ºC, photoperiod eight or more hours light per day, and light intensity equal to or greater...

Plasticity in the timing of activity in the Red-rumped Agouti, Dasyprocta leporina (Mammalia: Rodentia), in the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Magalhães,Laura Martins; Srbek-Araujo,Ana Carolina.
Abstract Timing of activity is a consequence of adaptations to daily and seasonal changes in the environment and examining these patterns is important to better understand the temporal niches of the species. Here we examine temporal activity in the Red-rumped Agouti (Dasyprocta leporina) in two fragments of Atlantic Forest and those factors that influence the circadian rhythm in the study areas. Camera traps were used to gather data in two protected areas (one montane and other coastal) in the state of Espírito Santo, southeastern Brazil. A total of 49 photos were taken in the mountains and 152 in the coastal area. Activity patterns were diurnal and bimodal, and animals were active for 14-15 hours each day. Activity peaked in the morning soon after sunrise...

Population dynamics and reproductive phenology of a harvestman in a tidal freshwater wetland Anais da ABC (AABC)
IGLESIAS,PATRICIA P.; PEREYRA,MARTÍN O..
Abstract There is a great amount of ecological information for terrestrial arthropods in several types of habitats, but few studies have focused on populations living in tidal freshwater wetlands. During a two-year field survey, we studied the temporal dynamics of the harvestman Discocyrtus prospicuus inhabiting a freshwater wetland exposed to predictable tides and unpredictable floods. We also explored the effects of temperature, precipitation, and tide level on the population dynamics and reproductive phenology. Our findings are markedly different from those reported in other harvestman species living in different habitats and also from conspecific populations living in the mainland. Adults, subadults, and juveniles remain active throughout the year,...
