A walk on the wild side: Oryza species as source for rice abiotic stress tolerance Genet. Mol. Biol.
Menguer,Paloma Koprovski; Sperotto,Raul Antonio; Ricachenevsky,Felipe Klein.
Abstract Oryza sativa, the common cultivated rice, is one of the most important crops for human consumption, but production is increasingly threatened by abiotic stresses. Although many efforts have resulted in breeding rice cultivars that are relatively tolerant to their local environments, climate changes and population increase are expected to soon call for new, fast generation of stress tolerant rice germplasm, and current within-species rice diversity might not be enough to overcome such needs. The Oryza genus contains other 23 wild species, with only Oryza glaberrima being also domesticated. Rice domestication was performed with a narrow genetic diversity, and the other Oryza species are a virtually untapped genetic resource for rice stress tolerance...

Accuracy and simultaneous selection gains for N-stress tolerance and N-use efficiency in maize tropical lines Scientia Agricola
Mendonça,Leandro de Freitas; Granato,Ítalo Stefanine Correia; Alves,Filipe Couto; Morais,Pedro Patric Pinho; Vidotti,Miriam Suzane; Fritsche-Neto,Roberto.
ABSTRACT Maize plants can be N-use efficient or N-stress tolerant. The first have high yields in favorable environments but is drastically affected under stress conditions; whereas the second show satisfactory yields in stressful environments but only moderate ones under optimal conditions. In this context, our aim was to assess the possibility of selecting tropical maize lines that are simultaneously N-stress tolerant and N-use efficient and check for differences between simultaneous selection statistical methods. Sixty-four tropical maize lines were evaluated for Nitrogen Agronomic Efficiency (NAE) and Low Nitrogen Tolerance (LNTI) response indices and two per se selection indices, Low Nitrogen Agronomic Efficiency (LNAE) and Harmonic Mean of Relative...

Agronomic and molecular characterization of wild germplasm Saccharum spontaneum for sugarcane and energycane breeding purposes Scientia Agricola
Silva,Jorge Alberto Gonçalves da; Costa,Paulo Mafra de Almeida; Marconi,Thiago Gibbin; Barreto,Everton Jean da Silva; Solís-Gracia,Nora; Park,Jon-Won; Glynn,Neil Charles.
ABSTRACT: Among the species related to sugarcane, Saccharum spontaneum (L.) is a wild species with the greatest potential as a source of genetic variation to cope with biomass production in harsh environments. Due to its high yield, early vigor, ratooning ability, low input requirements and tolerance to various biotic and abiotic stresses, sugarcane breeders have shown interest in its contribution, as a donor of genes, to the development of high biomass energy canes. The conservation, evaluation and utilization of the genetic variability of S. spontaneum available in germplasm collections are critical for breeding, but, given the aggressive rhizomatous growth habit and the ability to propagate via seed dispersal, S. spontaneum is classified as a noxious...

Aluminum toxicity reduces the nutritional efficiency of macronutrients and micronutrients in sugarcane seedlings Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Borges,Carolina Eggers; Cazetta,Jairo Osvaldo; Sousa,Francisco Bruno Ferreira de; Oliveira,Kamilla Silva.
ABSTRACT Although the effects of aluminum on the content and accumulation of mineral nutrients in crops have been studied, but nothing is known about its effect on the nutritional efficiency of sugarcane. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of aluminum toxicity on nutritional efficiency, nutrient accumulation, and growth of sugarcane seedling. Sugarcane seedlings of the genotype IACSP95-5000, obtained from one-bud mini-cuttings (3 cm), were used in the test. Seedlings were subjected to treatments in a completely randomized design, with eight Al concentrations in the nutrient solution (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, and 70 mg L−1) and three replicates, totaling 24 experimental units. Analyses determined the contents, accumulation, and absorption,...

Antioxidant responses of wheat plants under stress Genet. Mol. Biol.
Caverzan,Andréia; Casassola,Alice; Brammer,Sandra Patussi.
Abstract Currently, food security depends on the increased production of cereals such as wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), which is an important source of calories and protein for humans. However, cells of the crop have suffered from the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which can cause severe oxidative damage to the plants, due to environmental stresses. ROS are toxic molecules found in various subcellular compartments. The equilibrium between the production and detoxification of ROS is sustained by enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidants. In the present review, we offer a brief summary of antioxidant defense and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) signaling in wheat plants. Wheat plants increase antioxidant defense mechanisms under abiotic stresses, such...

AtchitIV gene expression is stimulated under abiotic stresses and is spatially and temporally regulated during embryo development Genet. Mol. Biol.
Gerhardt,Liliane B. de A.; Magioli,Cláudia; Perez,Ana B.U.C.M.; Margis,Rogério; Sachetto-Martins,Gilberto; Margis-Pinheiro,Márcia.
The expression of AtchitIV gene was analysed in Arabidopsis plants submitted to abiotic stresses. Transcript accumulation was detected in leaves in response to UV light exposure, exogenous salicylic acid administration and wounding. Transgenic Arabidopsis plants carrying AtchitIV promoter::gus fusion also showed differential expression of the reporter gene in response to these treatments. The AtchitIV expression was also analysed during Arabidopsis embryo development. GUS assay demonstrated AtchitIV promoter activation in zygotic embryos from torpedo stage up to full maturation. Promoter deletion analysis indicated that all the 5' cis-acting elements responsible for the specific tissue expression are located in a region of 1083 bp, adjacent to the start of...

Souza,Leandro Vagno de; Miranda,Glauco Vieira; Galvão,João Carlos Cardoso; Guimarães,Lauro José Moreira; Santos,Izabel Cristina dos.
The objectives of this work were to caracterize the tropical maize germplasm and to compare the combining abilities of maize grain yield under different levels of environmental stress. A diallel was performed among tropical maize cultivars with wide adaptability, whose hybrid combinations were evaluated in two sowing dates, in two years. The significance of the environmental effect emphasized the environmental contrasts. Based on grain yield, the environments were classified as favorable (8,331 kg ha-1), low stress (6,637 kg ha-1), high stress (5,495 kg ha-1), and intense stress (2,443 kg ha-1). None of the genetic effects were significant in favorable and intense stress environments, indicating that there was low germplasm variability under these...

Critical periods of sorghum and palisadegrass in intercropped cultivation for climatic risk zoning R. Bras. Zootec.
Lima,Nino Rodrigo Cabral de Barros; Santos,Patricia Menezes; Mendonça,Fernando Campos; Araujo,Leandro Coelho de.
The objective of this work was to define critical periods for sorghum and palisadegrass cultivated on crop-livestock integrated systems under water deficit. An experiment was carried out in a completely random block design with four treatments (control and interruption of water supply in three periods) and three replicates. Water supply was interrupted until soil water humidity was close to permanent wilting point at the phases: germination of palisadegrass seeds; start of tillering of palisadegrass and initiation of panicles of shorghum; start of shorghum flowering. Water deficit starting at palisadegrass germination delayed intital development of the plants because of the reduction in tillering. Water restriction at panicle initiation phase and at...

Early indirect selection for nitrogen use efficiency in maize1 Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Caixeta,Débora Santos; Fritsche-Neto,Roberto; Granato,Ítalo Stefanine Correia; Oliveira,Lucimar Rodrigues de; Galvão,João Carlos Cardoso.
Several studies to evaluate nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) have been carried out using early growth stages. However, there are no scientific reports on the ideal stage for evaluation and on which characteristics have the highest correlation with the NUE at that stage. The aim therefore was to identify the phenological stages and secondary characteristics which maximize accuracy in early indirect selection for NUE in maize. To do this, three endogamic maize strains were evaluated in a completely randomised design with five replications, in a triple factorial scheme (strains x N levels x phenological stage), at two contrasting nitrogen levels: low and high nitrogen. The plants were evaluated at five growth stages: stage nine (V9), with 14 fully-developed...

Effect of salinity stress in Setaria viridis (L.) P. Beauv. accession A10.1 during seed germination and plant development Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Ferreira,Thalita Massaro Malheiros; Santos,Mariana de Lima; Lopes,Cecilia Lima; Sousa,Carlos Antonio Ferreira de; Souza Junior,Manoel Teixeira.
ABSTRACT Setaria viridis (L.) P. Beauv. is a species proposed to be used as model plant in reverse genetics studies for the validation of gene function. Soil salinity is a recurring problem present in more than a 100 countries worldwide, and approximately 20% of the agricultural land in the world has saline and/or sodium soils. Saline stress affects all the main processes of the plant, such as germination, growth, and, consequently, the yield. The present study aimed at determining the tolerance levels of S. viridisA10.1 to saline stress and identify its potential as a model plant to validate salt-tolerance candidate genes/alleles as well as promoter sequences from salt-responsive genes. In an initial experiment, the seeds of the plant were sown on a...

Effect of Trinexapac-Ethyl, at Two Application Timings, on the Initial Development of Eucalyptus under Water Deficit Planta Daninha
BACHA,A.L.; MARTINS,P.F.R.B.; ALVES,P.L.C.A.; PAULA,R.C..
ABSTRACT: Eucalyptus plants are sensitive to stress during their initial development, and water deficit is the most important one. Thus, the hormetic effect caused by the application of chemical products may be a factor that allows plants to tolerate such stresses. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of trinexapac-ethyl on the initial growth of Eucalyptus urophylla (Clone I-144), under water deficiency, at two application timings (before planting - BP; and after planting - AP). Two experiments were conducted simultaneously in a greenhouse for 74 days after planting (DAP) eucalyptus in 15 L pots. Treatments consisted of three trinexapac-ethyl doses (0.0, 30, and 60 g a.i. ha-1) and two water conditions (with and without water deficit). A...

Effects of hormonal priming on seed germination of pigeon pea under cadmium stress Anais da ABC (AABC)
SNEIDERIS,LARISSA C.; GAVASSI,MARINA A.; CAMPOS,MARCELO L.; D'AMICO-DAMIÃO,VICTOR; CARVALHO,ROGÉRIO F..
In this work we investigated whether priming with auxin, cytokinin, gibberellin, abscisic acid and ethylene, alters the physiological responses of seeds of pigeon pea germinated under water and cadmium stress. Seeds treated with water or non-treated seeds were used as control. Although compared to non-treated seeds we found that the hormone treatments improve the germination of pigeon pea under cadmium stress, however, these treatments did not differ from water. However, we also observed a trend of tolerance to the effects of cadmium in the presence of ethylene, suggesting that the use of this hormone may be an efficient method to overcome seed germination under metal stress.

ESTs analysis in maize developing kernels exposed to single and combined water and heat stresses Scientia Agricola
Andjelković,Violeta; Ignjatović-Micić,Dragana.
Molecular and metabolic response of plants to a combination of two abiotic stresses is unique and cannot be directly extrapolated from the response of plants to each of the stresses individually. cDNA macroarray has become a useful tool to analyze expression profiles and compare the similarities and differences of various expression patterns. A macroarray of approximately 2,500 maize (Zea mays L.) cDNAs was used for transcriptome profiling in response to single and simultaneous application of water and high temperature stress of maize developing kernels at 15 days after pollination. All stress treatments (water stress-WS, heat stress-HS and their combined application-CS) induced changes in expression of 106 transcripts with 54 up-regulated and 52...

Eucalyptus urograndis stem proteome is responsive to short-term cold stress Genet. Mol. Biol.
Leonardi,Gabriela de Almeida; Carlos,Natália Aparecida; Mazzafera,Paulo; Balbuena,Tiago Santana.
Eucalyptus urograndis is a hybrid eucalyptus of major economic importance to the Brazilian pulp and paper industry. Although widely used in forest nurseries around the country, little is known about the biochemical changes imposed by environmental stress in this species. In this study, we evaluated the changes in the stem proteome after short-term stimulation by exposure to low temperature. Using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry-based protein identification, 12 proteins were found to be differentially regulated and successfully identified after stringent database searches against a protein database from a closely related species (Eucalyptus grandis). The identification of these proteins indicated that the E....

Silva,Daiana Alves da; Esteves,Jose Antonio de Fatima; Gonçalves,João Guilherme Ribeiro; Azevedo,Cleber Vinícius Giaretta; Ribeiro,Tamires; Chiorato,Alisson Fernando; Carbonell,Sérgio Augusto Morais.
ABSTRACT Common bean is one of the most important legumes in Latin America, mostly grown in soils with low phosphorus (P) availability. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the responses of 20 bean genotypes to P deficiency. The experiment was a completely randomized design in a 2 × 20 factorial arrangement; the first factor consisted of P levels and the second factor, of 20 bean genotypes, with six replications. The substrate was a Red Eutrophic Oxisol with low P content. For application of the P treatments, it was applied simple superphosphate, consisting of two levels: restrictive and control, with the application of 45 and 90 kg∙ha–1 of P2O5, respectively. At 28 days, we observed the first symptoms of nutrient deficiency, with the decrease in the...

Evaluation of grain sorghum hybrids for aluminum tolerance in nutrient solution Agronomy
Menezes, Cicero Beserra de; Lima, Geisiane Matos; Marucci, Rosangela Cristina; Bernardino, Karine Costa; Santos, Crislene Vieira dos; Julio, Marcos Paulo Mingote; Schaffert, Robert Eugene.
Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) is one of the most important cereal crops in the world. In Brazil, the acreage of grain sorghum during off-season is quite expansive. Most of this area is the Cerrado, a Brazilian biome that is similar to a Savannah and is characterized by high acidity and soluble aluminum at toxic levels for plants. The aluminum acts as a limiting factor in achieving high yields. The purpose of this work was to phenotype sorghum hybrids for aluminum tolerance. Eighteen hybrids were evaluated in a nutrient solution containing {0} or {27} µM Al3+. The work was carried out in a growth chamber at the Embrapa Maize and Sorghum, from April 4 to May 30, 2014. The lines ATF 13B (susceptible) and ATF 14B (tolerant) were used as check cultivars....

Evaluation of maize top crosses under two nitrogen levels Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Guedes,Fernando Lisboa; Souza,João Cândido de; Costa,Emiliano Fernandes Nassau; Reis,Matheus Costa dos; Cardoso,Gustavo Andrade; Ematné,Hugo Junqueira.
Maize crops in Brazil have a wide diversity of management systems. There is a large contingent of family agriculture, which uses little or no agricultural inputs, compared to the rural enterprise which uses the most modern production systems. This difference in the management systems is particularly noticeable in relation to consumption of fertilizers, especially nitrogenous ones. Therefore it is necessary to obtain plants with efficient nitrogen (N) use that also respond to applied nitrogen. Thus, the aim of the study was to evaluate the performance of S0:1 progenies, in top crosses, under two nitrogen levels and select the best ones based on responsiveness and efficiency. Sixty seven S0:1 progenies from populations of single cross hybrids were crossed...

Expression of Early Light Induced Protein in Grapevine and Pea, under Different Conditions and its Relation with Photoinhibition Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Berti,Maritza; Pinto,Manuel.
Early light induced proteins (ELIP) are a type of proteins which are expressed before than other chloroplast proteins in the presence of light. These proteins have been studied in a large number of annual species such as pea (Pisum sativum L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) and Arabidopsis sp. In perennials plants the studies about ELIPs are very scarce. The possible photoprotective function of the ELIPs has motivated the interest in investigating the presence of this type of proteins in a perennial plant such as grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) and if their characteristics differ from those found in annual plants. In this paper a comparative study was conducted on the ELIPs expression in grapevine and pea to investigate whether there are differences regarding...
