Acceptance and Repayment of Agricultural Credit in Lombok Indonesia - Farmer's Perspectives AgEcon
Sjah, Taslim; Russell, Iean W.; Cameron, Donald.
This paper analyzes farmer decisions regarding acceptance and repayment of agricultural credit in Lombok, Indonesia. A survey was conducted during July 2001- March 2002 in Central Lombok, where the current KKP government credit scheme is provided to agricultural producers. Three villages within the regency were sampled, representing various repayment rates of government credit. Data were collected using face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with 65 farmers who had made use of government or other sources of agricultural credit. Capital possession was found to be the starting point for farmers' decision-making in relation to credit use. As long as farmers had their own capital, they tended to avoid using credit, perceiving that credit from any source was...

Acceptance of fish hamburgers in school meals in the Southwest Region of Paraná, Brazil Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
BREDA,Leandra Schuastz; BELUSSO,Anne Caroline; NOGUEIRA,Barbara Arruda; CAMARGO,Guilherme Holub; MITTERER-DALTOÉ,Marina Leite.
Abstract The regular consumption of fish provides health gains for people, and its introduction in school meals is an important strategy to insert the habit of consuming this food by a population. Thus the objective of this study was to verify the acceptance of fish, presented in the form of hamburger, by children in municipal primary schools in the town of Pato Branco, Brazil, in which the school cooks had been trained to produce fish hamburgers. Acceptance was evaluated using a hedonic scale with 5 facial classifications (1 = disliked extremely to 5 = liked extremely). Students of both genders from 5 to 10 years of age (n = 142) were served the hamburgers for their midday meal, representing the protein portion of the meal. The results were analyzed by...

Addition of toasted baru nut (Dypteryx alata Vog.) and extruded rice bran to sugar cane candy (“rapadura”) Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
SILVA,Célia Caroline Florindo da; SILVA,Giselle de Lima Paixão e; SOARES JÚNIOR,Manoel Soares; BELÉIA,Adelaide Del Pino; CALIARI,Márcio.
Abstract Different proportions of sugar cane juice, toasted baru nut and extruded rice bran were used in the formulation of sugar cane candies (“rapaduras”), and the effect on color, hardness and proximate composition determined. The best formulation was selected on the basis of composition, hardness and luminosity, and evaluated for sensory acceptance and purchase intent. Simplex design was used to plan the experiment and the limits of the different ingredients. Sugar cane juice has lower values for ash, protein, lipids and total fiber compared to the other ingredients, but it is the ingredient that characterizes the product. The added ingredients affect the physical and chemical characteristics of the “rapaduras”. The hardness of the experimental...

AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY: FARM-LEVEL, MARKET, AND POLICY CONSIDERATIONS AgEcon
Van der Sluis, Evert; Diersen, Matthew A.; Dobbs, Thomas L..
This study provides an overview of the economic costs, benefits, and risks involved with agricultural biotechnology at the farm level, at the market level, and for the farm and food system as a whole. Both advantages and disadvantages of agricultural biotechnology are discussed. Among the drivers of U.S. domestic and international consumer demand for transgenic crop products discussed are environmental and food safety concerns. A comparison is made between a "science-based" regulatory framework and a policy based on the precautionary principle. The authors argue that open dialogue is needed for achieving improved public understanding of agricultural biotechnology, and that analyses need to go beyond discussing the scientific merits of biotechnology, to...

Consumers' Trust in Government and Their Attitudes Towards Genetically Modified Food: Empirical Evidence from China AgEcon
Qiu, Huanguang; Huang, Jikun.
Understanding the determinants of consumer's acceptance towards genetically modified food (GMF) is critical important for future biotechnology development. Among many factors, consumers' trust in government has increasingly received great attentions in the literature. However, accurately quantifying impact of consumers' trust in government on their GMF attitudes is difficult because researchers often encounter many difficulties in empirical estimation. Overall goal of this study is to empirically quantify the impact of consumers' trust in government on their attitudes towards GMF in China. An econometric model on consumer's trust in government and their attitude towards GMF is developed and estimated based on a unique data set collected by the authors in...

Gallina,Darlila Aparecida; Barbosa,Paula de Paula Menezes; Ormenese,Rita de Cássia Salvucci Celeste; Garcia,Aline de Oliveira.
ABSTRACT Dairy products are the primary delivery for probiotics, with great popularity among the public looking for functional foods. The addition of probiotics to new food matrices requires studies about the stability and viability of these microorganisms in the final product. This study aimed to develop a probiotic smoothie beverage and to evaluate the microbiological quality, pH, acidity, syneresis, probiotics viability, sensory acceptance, and consumers’ preference. For that, thirty-six beverage formulations were prepared using yogurt and different fruit pulps. Six formulations were selected for the study, as follows: probiotic yogurt with the addition of mango pulp, grape, red fruits (containing 8 and 10% sucrose), mango/passion fruit, and red...

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of passive modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) on the maintenance of fruit quality during the extended storage of ‘Rocha’ and ‘Packham’s Triumph’ pears. Fruit were packed in linear low density polyethylene (100 mm), with 6% BIF 1500 additive placed into perforated plastic boxes and kept at 0 ± 1 °C and 90 ± 5% RH for up to 180 days. MAP reduced weight loss by 14.8% for ‘Rocha’ and 11.5% for ‘Packham’s’ pears after 180 days in cold storage and retained the green color of the skin, which means that the yellowing visual perception was delayed in 60 and 90 days for ‘Rocha’ and ‘Packham’s’ pears, respectively. A strong softening was observed for ‘Packham’s’ pears after being kept for 150 days at 0° C followed by 5...

How to model social-ecological systems? – A case study on the effects of a future offshore wind farm on the local society and ecosystem, and whether social compensation matters ArchiMer
Haraldsson, Matilda; Raoux, Aurore; Riera, Fabien; Hay, Julien; Dambacher, Jeffrey M.; Niquil, Nathalie.
Models of social-ecological systems (SES) are acknowledged as an important tool to understand human-nature relations. However, many SES models fail to integrate adequate information from both the human and ecological subsystems. With an example model of a future Offshore Wind Farm development and its effects on both the ecosystem and local human population, we illustrate a method facilitating a “balanced” SES model, in terms of including information from both subsystems. We use qualitative mathematical modeling, which allows to quickly analyze the structure and dynamics of a system without including quantitative data, and therefore to compare alternative system structures based on different understandings of how the system works. By including similar...

Kommunikationsbeziehungen der Amter fur Landwirtschaft und Flurneuordnung im Bereich der Agrarumweltprogramme - Fallstudie Sachsen-Anhalt AgEcon
Prager, Katrin; Nagel, Uwe Jens.
The administration and implementation of agri-environmental schemes is one of the tasks of Agricultural Agencies (Amter fur Landwirtschaft und Flurneuordnung). These agencies thus play a major role for all farmers interested or participating in funding schemes. Assuming that feeding information about preferences and needs of programme entrants into the agri-environmental decision-making process is essential for assuring acceptance and effectiveness of the prescribed measures, agricultural agencies are predestined to collect and supply relevant information. Using the state of Sachsen-Anhalt as an example, the communication network between agencies, farmers, the Ministry, farmers' associations and agricultural extension workers is explored. Hierarchical...
