A combined enrichment/polymerase chain reaction based method for the routine screening of Streptococcus agalactiae in pregnant women BJM
Munari,F.M.; De-Paris,F.; Salton,G.D.; Lora,P.S; Giovanella,P; Machado,A.B.M.P; Laybauer,L.S.; Oliveira,K.R.P.; Ferri,C; Silveira,J.L.S.; Laurino,C.C.F.C; Xavier,R.M.; Barth,A.L; Echeverrigaray,S; Laurino,J.P..
Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the most common cause of life-threatening infection in neonates. Guidelines from CDC recommend universal screening of pregnant women for rectovaginal GBS colonization. The objective of this study was to compare the performance of a combined enrichment/PCR based method targeting the atr gene in relation to culture using enrichment with selective broth medium (standard method) to identify the presence of GBS in pregnant women. Rectovaginal GBS samples from women at ≥36 weeks of pregnancy were obtained with a swab and analyzed by the two methods. A total of 89 samples were evaluated. The prevalence of positive results for GBS detection was considerable higher when assessed by the combined enrichment/PCR method than with the...

A mussel tissue certified reference material for multiple phycotoxins. Part 1: design and preparation ArchiMer
Mccarron, Pearse; Emteborg, Hakan; Nulty, Ciara; Rundberget, Thomas; Loader, Jared I.; Teipel, Katharina; Miles, Christopher O.; Quilliam, Michael A.; Hess, Philipp.
The development of multi-analyte methods for lipophilic shellfish toxins based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry permits rapid screening and analysis of samples for a wide variety of toxins in a single run. Validated methods and appropriate certified reference materials (CRMs) are required to ensure accuracy of results. CRMs are essential for accurate instrument calibration, for assessing the complete analytical method from sample extraction to data analysis and for verifying trueness. However, CRMs have hitherto only been available for single toxin groups. Production of a CRM containing six major toxin groups was achieved through an international collaboration. Preparation of this material, CRM-FDMT1, drew on information from earlier studies as...

A statistical approach to static and dynamic tests for Global Navigation Satellite Systems receivers used in agricultural operations Scientia Agricola
Maldaner,Leonardo Felipe; Canata,Tatiana Fernanda; Dias,Carlos Tadeu dos Santos; Molin,José Paulo.
ABSTRACT: The adaptation of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) technology to fit the needs of farmers requires knowledge of the accuracy level delivered by a GNSS receiver in working conditions. To date, no methodology indicates the minimum number of replications to perform a statistical comparison. This study aims to advance knowledge on the methodological approach for evaluating the static and dynamic performance of GNSS receivers commonly used in agricultural operations. For the static test, a supporting frame in the ground carried all the receivers with coordinates properly transported. In the dynamic test, a circular rail with a 9.55 m radius was installed at ground level with a platform driven by an electric motor to carry the receivers...

Accuracy Assessment of Coastal Topography derived from UAV Images ArchiMer
Long, N.; Millescamps, B.; Pouget, F.; Dumon, A.; Lachaussee, N.; Bertin, X..
To monitor coastal environments, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is a low-cost and easy to use solution to enable data acquisition with high temporal frequency and spatial resolution. Compared to Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) or Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS), this solution produces Digital Surface Model (DSM) with a similar accuracy. To evaluate the DSM accuracy on a coastal environment, a campaign was carried out with a flying wing (eBee) combined with a digital camera. Using the Photoscan software and the photogrammetry process (Structure From Motion algorithm), a DSM and an orthomosaic were produced. Compared to GNSS surveys, the DSM accuracy is estimated. Two parameters are tested: the influence of the methodology (number and distribution of...

Comparison of whole genome prediction accuracy across generations using parametric and semi parametric methods Animal Sciences
Atefi, Abbas; Shadparvar, Abdol Ahad; Ghavi Hossein-Zadeh, Navid.
Accuracy of genomic prediction was compared using three parametric and semi parametric methods, including BayesA, Bayesian LASSO and Reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces regression under various levels of heritability (0.15, 0.3 and 0.45), different number of markers (500, 750 and 1000) and generation intervals of validating set. A historical population of 1000 individuals with equal sex ratio was simulated for 100 generations at constant size. It followed by 100 extra generations of gradually reducing size down to 500 individuals in generation 200. Individuals of generation 200 were mated randomly for 10 more generations applying litter size of 5 to expand the historical generation. Finally, 50 males and 500 females chosen from generation 210 were randomly...

Economics of Increased Beef Grader Accuracy AgEcon
Ibarburu, Maro A.; Lawrence, John D.; Busby, Darrell.
Carcass data from more than 38,000 cattle was used to compare the called and measured yield grade in two different periods: before and after the slaughter plant incorporated another grader in the line to improve grading accuracy. The study shows that the graders accuracy significantly increased. The higher accuracy affected all yield grades, but most notably resulted in more called yield grade 4 and 5 carcasses. This analysis will develop insight of what will be the effect of instrument grading that will be more accurate than previously called grades. The results are expressed as the conditional distribution of the called yield grade for a given value of the measured yield grade. The pricing grid currently used by the industry was used to analyze the effect...

Estimated live weight of growing Pêga breed donkeys Ciência Rural
Moreira,Camilla Garcia; Balieiro,Júlio César de Carvalho; Menezes,Madalena Lima; Ribeiro,Gabriela; Nascimento,Olivia Carmen de Araújo; Brandi,Roberta Ariboni.
ABSTRACT: The equations available in the literature to estimate the body weight (BW) of Pêga breed donkeys were evaluated using 25 animals aged 0-6 months and it was proposed an equation for BW prediction. For the measurement of the thoracic perimeter (TP) and for weighing the animals using the weighing tape, the animals were positioned in a forced station on a steep slope. An electronic scale was used for the determination of the BW. Accuracy of linear and nonlinear equations described in the literature was tested for BW prediction based on the animals’ TP, followed by the comparison of these equations with the equation developed in the present study for BW prediction of Pêga breed donkeys. A difference was noted (P<0.001) between the weights obtained...

Evaluating uncertainty in measurements of fish shoal aggregate backscattering cross-section caused by small shoal size relative to beam width ArchiMer
Diner, Noel.
The aggregate backscattering cross-section, sag, is the sum of backscattering cross-sections of all fish in a shoal. It is a basic acoustical parameter used for shoal description and biomass estimation. Simulations were undertaken for evaluating the impact of horizontal dimension, density, depth and beam width on measurements of sag for shoals with constant abundance. The important factor determining measurement bias is the ratio of shoal size expressed as along cross-section length relative to along ship beam width at mean shoal depth. The results show that 10 log10(sag) is underestimated by about 8 dB for a 5 m long shoal located at 200 m depth if detected by a 7? beam. A formula for correcting sag estimates for shoal sizes bigger than 1.3 times the beam...

Impact of embryo transfer phenotypic records on large-scale beef cattle genetic evaluations R. Bras. Zootec.
Junqueira,Vinícius Silva; Lopes,Paulo Sávio; Resende,Marcos Deon Vilela de; Silva,Fabyano Fonseca e; Lourenço,Daniela Andressa Lino; Yokoo,Marcos Jun Iti; Cardoso,Fernando Flores.
ABSTRACT We aimed to evaluate the impact of using embryo transfer (ET) information on weaning weight estimated breeding values (EBV) and its accuracy. Data from Hereford and Braford cattle, raised under extensive conditions in Southern Brazil, were used. A model that included ET information in addition to maternal (genetic and permanent environmental) effects as a function of foster dams was compared to a model without ET information. Accuracy of both bulls and calves increased due to inclusion of ET records in 0.04 and 0.12 points, respectively. In general, the inclusion of ET records provided a greater amount of phenotypic variance and most accurate EBV for sires and progeny. The results obtained in this study encourage the use of ET phenotypic records...

Measurement of the isotopic composition of dissolved iron in the open ocean ArchiMer
Lacan, F.; Radic, A.; Jeandel, C.; Poitrasson, F.; Sarthou, Geraldine; Pradoux, C.; Freydier, R..
This work demonstrates for the first time the feasibility of the measurement of the isotopic composition of dissolved iron in seawater for a typical open ocean Fe concentration range (0.1-1 nM). It also presents the first data of this kind. Iron is preconcentrated using a Nitriloacetic Acid Superflow resin and purified using an AG1x4 anion exchange resin. The isotopic ratios are measured with a MC-ICPMS Neptune, coupled with a desolvator (Aridus II), using a Fe-57-Fe-58 double spike mass bias correction. Measurement precision (0.13%, 2SD) allows resolving small iron isotopic composition variations within the water column, in the Atlantic sector of the Southern Ocean (from delta Fe-57 = -0.19 to +0.32 parts per thousand). Isotopically light iron found in...

Monitoring Marine Habitats With Photogrammetry: A Cost-Effective, Accurate, Precise and High-Resolution Reconstruction Method ArchiMer
Marre, Guilhem; Holon, Florian; Luque, Sandra; Boissery, Pierre; Deter, Julie.
Underwater photogrammetry has been increasingly used to study and monitor the three-dimensional characteristics of marine habitats, despite a lack of knowledge on the quality and reliability of the reconstructions. More particularly, little attention has been paid to exploring and estimating the relative contribution of multiple acquisition parameters on the model resolution (distance between neighbor vertices), accuracy (closeness to true positions/measures) and precision (variability of positions/measures). On the other hand, some studies used expensive or cumbersome camera systems that can restrict the number of users of this technology for the monitoring of marine habitats. This study aimed at developing a simple and cost-effective protocol able to...

Nicolas Sanson and his Map: The Course of the Amazon River Acta Amazonica
Cintra,Jorge Pimentel; Oliveira,Rafael Henrique de.
One of the first scientific maps of the Amazon region, The Course of the Amazon River (Le Cours de La Rivière des Amazones), was constructed by Nicolas Sanson, a French cartographer of the seventeenth century, and served as the prototype for many others. The evaluation of this chart, until now, has been that it is a very defective map, a sketch based on a historical account, according to the opinion of La Condamine. Thus, the aim of the present work was to prove that the map of the Amazon River traced by Nicolas Sanson is a scientific work, a map that presents precise geographic coordinates considering its time, shows a well-determined prime meridian, and also employs a creative methodology to deduce longitudes from latitudes and distances that had been...

Rank-ordering coefficients of variation for popping expansion - doi: 10.4025/actasciagron.v33i3.11911 Agronomy
Arnhold, Emmanuel; Universidade Federal do Goiás (UFG); Milani, Klayton Flávio; Universidade Estatual de Maringá (UEM).
The coefficient of variation (CV) has been the most important statistic to determine the precision of experimental errors, but an even classification for guiding popcorn breeders is still lacking for popping expansion. The normality of data from 50 CVs was tested through the Shapiro-Wilk test, and the mean (m), median, standard deviation (SD), maximum and minimum values, asymmetry and kurtosis were all determined using the momentum method. The CVs were ranked as low [CV ≤ (m - 1 SD)], moderate [(m - 1 SD) < CV ≤ (m + 1 SD)], high [(m + 1 SD) < CV ≤ (m + 2 SD)] and very high [CV > (m + 2 SD)]. In summary, these data were close to the normality because the slight and flattened curve was skewed to the right. The CV’s mean was...

Issues on sampling procedure definition led numerous study results to be biased and object of controversy. Choosing relevant sampling design and number of samples is a difficult task when wanted to set up or optimize a survey. The survey design choice is very important to avoid bias and increase the survey cost-efficiency. It can have a strong effect on the sample size needed to achieve some targeted accuracy on results. And on the final cost of the procedure. The sequential process we expose here melt design based and model based sampling theories. Its objectives is helping practitioners defining a sampling design and a number of samples for their survey when inference to the whole population is wanted.
