Action of the extracts of Pluchea sagittalis on the absorptive characteristics of the gastrointestinal tract BABT
Burger,Marilise E.; Baldisserotto,Bernardo; Teixeira,Elisângela P.; Soares,Joceana.
Pluchea sagittalis (Lam.) Cabrera, (quitoco or erva lucera) is commonly used to treat digestive disorders in Southern Brazil and countries of the South Cone. The crude aqueous extracts from the leaves, stalks or flowers were used in acute oral toxicity in mice and in pharmacological studies to determine the gastrointestinal transport of water, sodium, and potassium in rats. The oral administration of 5000 mg/kg of extracts examined did not produce signs of intoxication nor induce the death of any mice during the period of 14 days. The extracts from the leaves and stalk have reduced the absorption of water in the jejunum and jejunum and ileum, respectively with relation to the control. There was an absorption of sodium with the administration of these...

Acute toxicity of mixture of sugarcane herbicides to tilapia fingerlings. Repositório Alice
MOURA, M. A. M.; JONSSON, C. M..
Abstract: Sugarcane cultivation is the most important agricultural activity in the State of São Paulo, which is responsible for over half of Brazilian production of the crop. Eutrophication and contamination of hydric resources caused by agricultural chemicals are major problems related to this crop. In the case of herbicides used to control weeds, aquatic organisms can be exposed to more than one toxic agent, and combinations of such pollutants can have different effects on biological systems. The aim of this work was to evaluate the toxic effects of mixtures of herbicides widely used in sugarcane cultivation, namely tebuthiuron (TBUT), ametryn (AMT), and Velpar K (a commercial mixture of diuron (DIU) and hexazinone (HZN)), to tilapia (Oreochromis...

Palacio,Soraya Moreno; Espinoza-Quiñones,Fernando Rodolfo; Galante,Raquel Manozzo; Zenatti,Dilcemara Cristina; Seolatto,Araceli Aparecida; Lorenz,Evandro Kleber; Zacarkim,Carlos Eduardo; Rossi,Nickeli; Rizzutto,Márcia de Almeida; Tabacniks,Manfredo Harri.
The present work was performed using the common onion (Allium cepa L.) as a bioindicator of toxicity of heavy metals in river water. The test waters were collected at two sampling sites: at the beginning and the end of the Toledo River. The bulbs of A. cepa L. were grown in test water with nine concentration levels of copper, zinc and lead from 0.1 to 50 ppm. In the laboratory, the influence of these test liquids on the root growth was examined during five days. For test liquids containing below 0.03-ppm dissolved Cu the root growth was reduced by 40% However, the same reduction occurred for 1-ppm dissolved Zn. For dissolved Pb, results reveal toxicity above 0.1 and 0.6 ppm at the beginning and the end of the Toledo river water, respectively.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons degradation by marine-derived basidiomycetes: optimization of the degradation process BJM
Vieira,Gabriela A.L.; Magrini,Mariana Juventina; Bonugli-Santos,Rafaella C.; Rodrigues,Marili V.N.; Sette,Lara D..
ABSTRACT Pyrene and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) are high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) recalcitrant to microbial attack. Although studies related to the microbial degradation of PAHs have been carried out in the last decades, little is known about degradation of these environmental pollutants by fungi from marine origin. Therefore, this study aimed to select one PAHs degrader among three marine-derived basidiomycete fungi and to study its pyrene detoxification/degradation. Marasmiellus sp. CBMAI 1062 showed higher levels of pyrene and BaP degradation and was subjected to studies related to pyrene degradation optimization using experimental design, acute toxicity, organic carbon removal (TOC), and metabolite evaluation. The experimental...
