Romão,C.O.; Carvalho,G.G.P.; Leite,V.M.; Santos,A.S.; Chagas,D.M.T.; Ribeiro,O.L.; Oliveira,P.A.; Magalhães,A.F.; Pires,A.J.V..
The aim of this study was to identify the most adequate level of calcium oxide (CaO) in the treatment of sugar cane by evaluating the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of dry matter. The sugar cane was homogenized with CaO levels 0, 0.75, 1.5, 2.25, 3.0, 3.75 and 4.5%, in natura matter, for 24 hours. The dry matter and mineral matter increased, while the organic matter of the sugar cane decreased (P <0.05) linearly as a result of the CaO levels. The CaO had no effect on the levels of crude protein and ether extract. The phosphorus concentration remained unchanged, but there was a significant increase (P<0.05) in the calcium content. The contents of neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber and cellulose decreased linearly with the...

Diallel analysis for grain yield and mineral absorption rate of soybeans grown in acid brazilian savannah soil PAB
Spehar,Carlos Roberto.
High available aluminium and low levels of calcium below the ploughed zone of the soil are limiting factors for agricultural sustainability in the Brazilian Cerrados (Savannahs). The mineral stresses compound with dry spells effect by preventing deep root growth of cultivated plants and causes yield instability. The mode of inheritance for grain yield and mineral absorption ratio of a diallel cross in soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] grown in high and low Al areas was identified. Differences among the genotypes for grain yield were more evident in the high Al, by grouping tolerant and non-tolerant genotypes for their respective arrays in the hybrids. A large proportion of genetic variance was additive for grain yield and mineral absorption ratio in both...

Generation mean analysis of root growth under aluminium-stress hydroponics in the soybeans (Glycine max (L.) Merrill). Repositório Alice
SPEHAR, C.R.; GALWEY, N.W..
There are vast areas in the tropics which are limited in their use by mineral stresses such as aluminium and low available nutrients. The grain crops shall be further adapted if breeding programmes include identification and use of the genetic factors to these hindrances. Three soybean families originated from crosses, selfing and backcrosses among the varieties IAC-2, IAC-7, IAC-9 and Biloxi were used in scaling tests to identify their genetic differences to aluminium tolerance by evaluating root growth in Al-stress hydroponics. The results indicate that this is a polygene trait with predominantly additive effects. However, the espistalic effect is also present and should de take into account in a breeding programme. Recurrent selection feasible because...

Genetic effects for maize traits in acid and non-acid soils Genet. Mol. Biol.
Pérez Velásquez,Juan C.; Souza Jr.,Cláudio Lopes de; Narro,Luis A.; Pandey,Shivaji; De León,Carlos.
Breeding programs for acid-soil tolerance are desirable as a relatively inexpensive and permanent way for increasing maize (Zea mays L.) yield on these soils. Our objective was to compare the genetic effects controlling the expression of maize traits in acid and non-acid soils. Seven related and one unrelated inbred lines, with different levels of tolerance to acid soil, and their F1, F2, BC1, and BC2 generations were evaluated in four acid and two non-acid soils. Estimates of additive, dominance, and epistatic effects were computed for grain yield, plant height, days to mid-silk, and prolificacy, using the generation means analysis procedure. For all traits the major part of the variation was accounted for by additive and dominance effects, with dominance...
