ABSTRACT The effect of additives used in the feed of broilers on anaerobic bio-digestion of poultry litter was evaluated. Four diets were used: NC: negative control; DFM: NC + 500 ppm direct-fed microbials (DFM) containing Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis; ENZ: diet formulated with an enzyme blend (20 ppm phytase, 200 ppm protease and 200 ppm xylanase); DFM+E: ENZ + DFM. Substrates for the anaerobic bio-digestion were prepared with litter from each treatment, containing 4 % total solids (TS). These were used in 16 continuous bio-digesters with a 2 kg d−1 load, to determine the production and potential biogas production and composition during an 85-day period. Influent and effluent samples were collected for the amounts of TS and volatile solids... |

Abstract: The study was carried out with the objective of evaluating the effects of using phytase levels at different energy densities in the diet of broilers, from 28 to 35 days of age. The experimental diets contained increasing levels of apparent metabolizable energy corrected for nitrogen balance and different levels of phytase. Growth performance variables, nutrient digestibility, as well as variables related to bone integrity were examined. Diets containing 500 FTU/kg in combination with 3150kcal.kg-1 of AMEn resulted in better growth performance. Supplementation with 500 and 1000 FTU/kg in the diets provide better coefficients of apparent and ileal digestibility of calcium and phosphorus, but negatively influence the deposition of calcium,... |

Chemical additives are used extensively in the offshore oil industry. For secondary oil recovery, the biopolymer xanthan has been recommended as a viscosifying agent but its use may provoke microbial problems. The effect of adding xanthan to marine sediments on the growth and metabolic activity of sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRB) was studied. In all instances, its addition resulted in an increasing in SRB numbers of up to 250-fold. This was accompanied by a marked increase in the electron transport activity of the sediments when these were incubated under either aerobic or anaerobic conditions. The products formed as a result of the biodegradation of the polymer by indigenous heterotrophic bacteria in these sediments appear to have acted as suitable... |

Abstract Honey must supplementation is necessary for mead production due to the deficiency in nitrogen materials in this feedstock, despite its high fermentative sugar content. The nitrogen limitation can halt or slow fermentation and lead to the production of unpleasant sensorial compounds, such as sulfur derivatives. The yeast JP14, a Saccharomyces cerevisiae isolated from Jataí bee’s pollen, was inoculated in 25 °Brix honey must with – 0 (control); 0,3; 0,7 and 1,0 g∙L-1 – of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and ammonium sulfate (AS). The addition of both supplements resulted in increased cell viability in the first 5 days of fermentation at 20 °C, but did not affect the final acidity of the produced meads. Supplementation also leads to increased sugar... |
