Polyurethanes are frequently used in underwater applications. They are required to resist the marine environment over long periods of immersion but the multiplicity of resin formulations makes material selection difficult. Accelerated tests are essential to guarantee long term integrity. This paper presents results from an experimental study in which polyurethane samples of two hardnesses, 40 and 90 Shore A, have been subjected to immersion in artificial sea water for periods up to two years at temperatures from 50 to 100 degrees C. In parallel samples have been immersed at sea in the Brest Estuary for up to five years. Mechanical properties have been measured on tensile specimens after ageing. The accelerated test results and FTIR analysis indicate that... |

Apoptosis has been largely analyzed in the testis. Nevertheless, the epididymis has been scarcely studied. We analyzed the number of apoptotic cells in the different regions (caput, corpus and cauda) of the epididymis of the South American rodent Octodon degus both young and senile. Apoptosis was identified using the TUNEL method which detects in situ DNA fragmentation. Apoptosis was detected in the principal cells of the epididymal epithelium. The caput epididymis was the region more affected. The caput of young animals showed that 0.32/1000 cells were apoptotic in contrast to 5.1/1000 of senile animals. Also in the cauda epididymis apoptosis is increased with age, appearing 0.14/1000 and 3.9/1000 in young and senile animals, respectively. On the other... |

The aim of the present study was to establish the extent of in vitro radioresponse of lymphocytes among 62 healthy adults of both genders and to estimate the distribution of baseline micronuclei and radiosensitivity among individuals of the study population using the cytochalasin block micronucleus test. A younger study group consisted of 10 males (mean age, 22.4 years; range, 21-27) and 12 females (mean age, 24.8 years; range, 20-29), whereas an older study group consisted of 18 males (mean age, 35.1 years; range, 30-44) and 22 females (mean age, 38.5 years; range, 30-48). For evaluation of radiosensitivity blood samples were irradiated in vitro using 60Co g-ray source. The radiation dose employed was 2 Gy, the dose rate 0.45 Gy/min. The study revealed a... |

The biology of cod reproduction is well described in the scientific literature. However, sperm biology and spermatozoa management are poorly studied in this species. Because of its recent farming expansion, a better knowledge of cod gametes is becoming especially useful. This work aimed at establishing tools to study sperm biology in cod, and also investigated the existence of changes in cod sperm quality during the spawning period. We showed that sperm concentration could be assessed using spectrophotometry at 260 nm. Sperm motility significantly decreased after a 168-h storage at 4 degrees C. A 1:9 dilution of sperm in a non-activating medium (1/3 seawater and 2/3 freshwater, osmotic pressure: 360 mOsm kg(-1)) improved sperm storage. Sperm concentration,... |

The long term reliability of tidal turbines is critical if these structures are to be cost-effective. Optimised design requires a combination of material durability models and structural analyses. Composites are a natural choice for turbine blades but there are few data available to predict material behaviour under coupled environmental and cycling loading. This paper addresses this problem, by introducing a multi-level framework for turbine blade qualification. At the material scale static and cyclic tests have been performed, both in air and in seawater. The influence of ageing in seawater on fatigue performance is then quantified and much lower fatigue lives are measured after ageing. At a higher level flume tank tests have been performed on three-blade... |

The oblique-banded grouper, Epinephelus radiatus (Day, 1968), occurred within the whole Indo- West Pacific where it is harvested by small-scale coastal fisheries. The aim of this study was to estimate the growth of this species at Reunion Island (South-West Indian Ocean) since no study investigated this topic so far. Fifty-seven individuals were sampled in the landings of the French local artisanal fisheries from March 2014 to March 2015. The relationships between two types of body length (total and standard lengths, cm) and total weight (g) were significant (p < 0.05). Total length-weight relationship was described by the following parameters: a = 0.01 and b = 3.098. For each individual, morphometry of the whole otolith was described with several... |

Carbon fiber reinforced composite materials are finding new applications in highly loaded marine structures such as tidal turbine blades and marine propellers. Such applications require long-term damage resistance while being subjected to continuous seawater immersion. However, few data exist on which to base material selection and design. This paper provides a set of results from interlaminar fracture tests on specimens before and after seawater ageing. The focus is on delamination as this is the main failure mechanism for laminated composites under out-of-plane loading. Results show that there are two contributions to changes in fracture toughness during an accelerated wet ageing program: effects due to water and effects due to physical ageing. These are... |

In this study, we sought to identify efficient enzymes for use in monitoring the deterioration and loss of germination of Balfourodendron riedelianum (Engler) Engler seeds. The research was conducted at the Laboratório de Tecnologia de Sementes e Mudas of the Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Paraná, Campus Marechal Cândido Rondon, Paraná State, Brazil. Seeds were harvested at three collection sites and later submitted for processing, drying, initial characterization and storage in airtight packaging under controlled and uncontrolled storage conditions and uncontrolled. Tests were conducted at 0, 120, 240, and 360 days using a germination test, germination speed index, accelerated ageing test and the activity of peroxidase, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase... |

The objective of this research was to evaluate average daily gain (ADG), carcass traits, meat tenderness and profitability of keeping cattle fed different oilseeds and vitamin E in feedlot. A total of 40 Red Norte young bulls with initial average body weight of 339±15 kg were utilized. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. The experiment lasted 84 days and experimental diets presented soybeans or cottonseeds as lipid sources associated or not to daily supplementation of 2,500 UI vitamin E per animal. The concentrate:roughage ratio was 60:40. Diets had the same amount of nitrogen (13% CP) and ether extract (6.5%). The data were analyzed by means of statistical software SAS 9.1. Neither vitamin supplementation... |

This study assessed the effects of different levels of oldman saltbush hay and ageing time on the physical characteristics of Santa Inês lamb meat. Sixty shoulders from 32 male lambs fed with 30, 40, 50 or 60% oldman saltbush hay for 60 days were vacuum-packaged and stored in a refrigerator at 0 ± 1°C for 0, 7 or 14 days of ageing. The shear force, cooking loss and water holding capacity were 3.06kgf cm-2, 37.28% and 76.71%, respectively, and there were no significant changed by studied factors (P>0.05) |

This report describes the June, 2019 ICCAT workshop on swordfish biology studies for growth, reproduction and genetics, hosted by the Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, Olhão, Portugal . The major objectives of the workshop were to 1) refine sampling and biological data collection protocols, 2) develop protocols and start the sample processing and analysis, and 3) plan for the project future steps. The biological sampling program was established by ICCAT’s Swordfish Species Group in 2018, aiming to improve knowledge of the stock distribution, age and gender of the catch, growth rate, age at maturation, maturation rate, spawning season and location and diet. This work will contribute to the next major advance in the assessment of swordfish status,... |
