Agricultural science and technology policy for growth and poverty reduction 31

This paper argues that the largely unrealized potential of agricultural science and technology (S&T) in promoting growth and poverty reduction in developing countries results from deeply rooted incompatibility among policy environments, institutional arrangements, and micro conditions and behavior in agricultural research and development (R&D). Achieving growth and poverty reduction based on greater agricultural productivity therefore means achieving greater compatibility among these three dimensions of agricultural innovation systems. In the process of industrialization of tomato industry in Xinjiang, the cooperative models of rural households and tomato processing enterprises are order type, mediated type and workshop type. The contents, closeness degree and stability of cooperation of them are different. Under different cooperation models, the closeness degree of pillar industry and rural households differs, as well as the speed and effect of the technology promotion. Micronutrient malnutrition affects billions of people world-wide, causing serious health problems. Different micronutrient interventions are currently being used, but their overall coverage is relatively limited. Biofortification – that is, breeding staple food crops for higher micronutrient contents – has been proposed as a new agriculture-based approach. Yet, as biofortified crops are still under development, relatively little is known about their economic impacts and wider ramifications. El cultivo del Agave tequilana F.A.C. Weber variedad azul es la principal fuente de empleo en el municipio de Tequila, tanto en las plantaciones como en la industria tequilera. El objetivo de la investigación es conocer e identificar la tecnología de producción del agave y conocer los recursos turísticos de la taberna y el paisaje agavero de dos grupos de productores los agaveros y taberneros, en el municipio de Tequila, Jalisco. Se tomó una muestra en cada uno de estos productores, en el primer caso se realizó un muestreo estadístico y en el segundo grupo se utilizó el método de muestreo "bola de nieve". Gender, Agricultural Commercialization, and Collective Action in Kenya 31

With the commercialization of agriculture, women are increasingly disadvantaged because of persistent gender-disparities in access to productive resources. Farmer collective action that intends to improve smallholder access to markets and technology could potentially accelerate this trend. Here, we use survey data of small-scale banana producers in Kenya to investigate the gender implications of recently established farmer groups. Traditionally, banana has been a women’s crop in Kenya. Our results confirm that the groups contribute to increasing male control over banana. Micronutrient malnutrition is a serious problem in many developing countries. Recently, agricultural technologies have been discussed as a complement to other intervention programs. Plant breeding, targeted at developing staple foods with higher contents of essential vitamins and trace minerals, could benefit the poor in particular. Embrapa presents, as results of its research projects, products that can be appropriated by agroindustries, both family and commodities, focusing on the development of new products and the improvement of the agroindustrial food processing for the population benefit. There are several solutions, from products developed based on plant raw materials, as well as from animal origin, and processes and machinery. Thus, the solution can go from a cultivar developed for industrial purposes, or a simple equipment to break an almond shell, or a portable meat industrialization unit approved to obtain legal records of production and commercialization.

This paper examines the effect of agricultural development on a country’s overall development and growth experience. In most poor countries, large fractions of land, labor, and other productive resources are devoted to producing food for subsistence needs. This “food problem” can delay a country’s industrial development for a long period of time, causing its per capita income to fall far behind the world leader. Once industrialization begins, this trend is reversed. The NERICAs are a group of rice varieties developed by the Africa Rice Centre during the 1990s, resulting from the inter-specific crosses between the Oryza sativa high yielding rice species from Asia and the locally adapted and multiple-stress resistant Oryza glaberrima African rice species.
