Climatic effects on sugarcane ripening under the influence of cultivars and crop age Scientia Agricola
Cardozo,Nilceu Piffer; Sentelhas,Paulo Cesar.
The lack of information about the effects of cultivars, crop age and climate on the sugarcane (Saccharum ssp.) crop yield and quality has been the primary factor impacting the sugar-ethanol sector in Brazil. One of the processes about which we do not have a satisfactory understanding is sugarcane ripening and the effects of cultivars, crop age and climate on that. Sugarcane ripening is the process of sucrose accumulation in stalks, which is heavily influenced by several factors, mainly by climatic conditions such as air temperature and water deficits. Because it is a complex process, studies of the variables involved in sugarcane ripening can provide important information, resulting in a better use of commercial cultivars, bringing advantages to growers,...

EFFECT OF THE MIST MICRO-SPRAY TIME ON PHOTOSYNTHETIC SPATIAL HETEROGENEITY OF GRAPE CANOPY REA
Zheng,Ming; Bai,Yungang; Zhang,Jianghui; Liu,Hongbo; Ding,Ping.
ABSTRACT In grape, high temperatures and low humidity prolong midday depression of foliar photosynthesis and dramatically reduce fruit yield. In this study, we explored the effects of various mist micro-spray treatments on grape photosynthesis at a test site in Shanshan County (N, 42.91°; E, 90.30°), Turpan, Xinjiang, China. We tested four different mist micro-spray durations including 1 h (WP1), 2 h (WP2), 3 h (WP3), and 0 h (CK). WP1, WP2, and WP3 affected canopy air temperature and humidity for 5 h, 7 h, and 9 h, respectively. At 12:30, WP1, WP2, and WP3 had the strongest cooling effect and altered temperature by −5.12 °C, −5.09 °C, and −5.17 °C respectively. The relative chlorophyll content was higher in the upper than the lower canopy leaves. There...

Extreme temperature trends in the equatorial region of Brazil: Case study of the state of Ceará Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Andrade,Eunice Maia de; Silva,Bernardo Barbosa da; Rodrigues,Meilla Marielle Araújo; Mendonça,Marcos Amauri Bezerra; Chaves,Luiz Carlos Guerreiro.
Despite uncertainties as to the real causes, there is a large amount of evidence of climatic change on Earth. With the objective of investigating changes in extreme air temperatures, as well as the local effects of these changes, eight data sets, collected throughout the State of Ceará in Brazil, were analyzed. Four series of data were obtained from the semi-arid region, three from the coastal zone, and one from a mountainous region. To quantify the changes that occurred during the study period, variations in maximum and minimum temperatures were calculated in relation to the mean of each data series. The annual rates of temperature increase were estimated from the angular coefficients of the best-fit lines. The results showed that although there are...

Factors affecting attack rate of whitefly on the eggplant PAB
Leite,Germano Leão Demolin; Picanço,Marcelo; Guedes,Raul Narciso Carvalho; Moreira,Márcio Dionizio.
The objective of this study was to determine the effects of weather, predators and parasitoids, canopy height and plant age, leaf chemical composition, levels of leaf N and K and leaf trichomes on the intensity of Bemisia tabaci attack on Solanum melongena. A higher density of nymph and whitefly adults was recorded at the base and medium of the plant compared to the apex. A higher number of eggs was observed on the medium part than on the apical and base part of the plants dossel. An increase in the density of whitefly is associated with an increase in temperature.

Fomesafen toxicity to bean plants as a function of the time of application and herbicide dose Agronomy
Cieslik, Lucas Fernando; Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná; Vidal, Ribas Antônio; Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul; Trezzi, Michelangelo Muzell; Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná.
The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the impact of the time of fomesafen application and its dose on the tolerance of the common bean crop and to investigate the influence of environmental variables on herbicide selectivity. Two field experiments were conducted using the time of fomesafen application and its dose as factors. Crop injury from fomesafen reached 20% when evaluated one week after treatment (WAT). When sprayed at the warmest times of the day when irradiance levels were at their highest (11h00 and 16h00), fomesafen phytotoxicity was higher compared with other application times. Increased values of these two environmental variables, especially luminosity, was associated with high levels of fomesafen injury to the bean crop....

Greenhouses covering materials: a comparative study CIGR Journal
Fadel, Moustafa Amin; Bani Hammad, Bani A.; AlHosany, Faisal; Iwaimer, Osama.
Greenhouse covering material is the most governing member of the construction which controls two major parameters, the amount of light and heat diffused from the surrounding environment into the internal space. In hot areas, balancing between optimum temperature and maximum light intensity inside the greenhouse consumes most of the energy spent in vegetable production systems. In this research, a special testing stand was fabricated to simulate the structure of a typical greenhouse provided with a 400W full spectrum light as a source of light and heat. Tests were carried out to investigate the effectiveness of different commercial covering material in light and heat diffusion. Twenty one combinations of Fiberglass, Polyethylene, Polycarbonate, Plexiglass...

Impacts of climatic changes on the vegetative development of olive cultivars AGRIAMBI
Florêncio,Gabriel W. L.; Martins,Fabrina B.; Ferreira,Mábele de C.; Pereira,Rodolfo A. de A..
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to simulate the vegetative development of the olive cultivars Arbequina and MGS ASC315 cultivated in Maria da Fé, MG, Brazil (22° 18’ 29” S, 45° 22’ 31” W, 1.276 m of altitude). The development of these cultivars was simulated in nine transplanting dates, considering three distinct scenarios for three periods (2011-2040, 2041-2070 and 2071-2100). Climate changes influence the olive crop management. The increase in air temperature modifies the development rate and the duration of the seedling phase of the cultivars Arbequina and MGSASC315. In colder months, there is accelerated vegetative development and shorter seedling phase duration. Conversely, in warmer months, there is delayed development with longer seedling phase...

Methane fluxes from waterlogged and drained Histosols of highland areas Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Rachwal,Marcos Fernando Glück; Zanatta,Josiléia Acordi; Dieckow,Jeferson; Denega,Genuir Luis; Curcio,Gustavo Ribas; Bayer,Cimélio.
Soil can be either source or sink of methane (CH4), depending on the balance between methanogenesis and methanotrophy, which are determined by pedological, climatic and management factors. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of drainage of a highland Haplic Histosol on CH4 fluxes. Field research was carried out in Ponta Grossa (Paraná, Brazil) based on the measurement of CH4 fluxes by the static chamber method in natural and drained Histosol, over one year (17 sampling events). The natural Histosol showed net CH4 eflux, with rates varying from 238 µg m-2 h-1 CH4, in cool/cold periods, to 2,850 µg m-2 h-1 CH4, in warm/hot periods, resulting a cumulative emission of 116 kg ha-1 yr-1 CH4. In the opposite, the drained Histosol showed net...
