Mocó cotton belong to the same species as the cultivated species, Gossypium hirsutum, and cultivated forms were mainly landraces but also developed as cultivars, bearing good fiber quality and drought tolerant when cropped as a perennial species. The northeast Brazil crop system based on this cotton type is finished, with a few small area planted in the three main States, where it was previously cultivated (Ceará, Paraíba, and Rio Grande do Norte), but in others, maintenance is accomplished by single dooryard plants. Plants were found in all visited Northeast Brazil municipalities, sometimes in the North of the country, and were collected for ex situ preservation and evaluation. Most of seeds had no fuzz (62.2%) and 94.6% of the genotypes presented spot in... |

Cows milk may contain two types of - casein: A1 and A2. A1 digestion is associated with the release of - casomorphine-7 peptide, which can cause adverse gastrointestinal effects. Two methods high-resolution melting (HRM) and rhAmp® SNP genotyping - were developed to identify the - casein gene (CSN2) A1 and A2 alleles directly in milk. DNA milk samples from 45 animals were examined and 10 samples were also sequenced to confirm the accuracy of the assays. The analytical sensitivities of both strategies for A1 allele identification were evaluated by testing decreasing dilutions of A1 allele DNA copies (500 - 5 copies) in the A2 sample. The limits of detection for A1 in A2 samples were 10% (100 copies) and 2% (10 copies) for HRM and rhAmp, respectively. Both... |

The rising consumption of A2 milk and its derivatives in recent years has garnered attention from both consumers and producers, mainly due its possible health benefits, such as enhanced digestion and easier absorption. Thus, a novel real-time PCR using a combination of locked nucleic acid modified (LNA) conjugated probes was developed to genotype A1 and A2 alleles of B-casein gene (CSN2) and to detect and quantify the A1 presence in A2 samples. The limit of detection for each probe (A1 and A2) was evaluated using decreasing serial dilutions. Besides, the sensitivity of A1 allele detection in the A2 samples was also tested. The limits of detection of A1 and A2 alleles were 6 copies, while for A1 allele detection in A2 samples was 7.5 copies (1%). The... |

Increasing food production is essential to meet the demands of a growing human population, with its rising income levels and nutritional expectations. To address the demand, plant breeders seek new sources of genetic variation to enhance the productivity, sustainability and resilience of crop varieties. Here we launch a high-resolution, open-access research platform to facilitate genome-wide association mapping in rice, a staple food crop. The platform provides an immortal collection of diverse germplasm, a high-density single-nucleotide polymorphism data set tailored for gene discovery, well-documented analytical strategies, and a suite of bioinformatics resources to facilitate biological interpretation. Using grain length, we demonstrate the power and... |

Camperos are meat-type chickens developed in Argentina that are under study for their response to disease. Nine new alleles were found in Campero chickens (from INTA EEA Pergamino) at the highly polymorphic BG loci within the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC), and were later reported to the GenBank (Accession numbers: DQ17443, DQ174444, DQ176443-DQ6449). All of them vary from previously reported BG alleles obtained from white Leghorn chickens and the Red Jungle Fowl from the Chicken Genome Project. Animals were selected from line-crossing among Plymouth Rock Red, Rhode Island Red and Cornish Red. Sequences reported add further evidence about the extreme diversity of these highly polymorphic, rapidly-evolving MHC genes. |
