A long-term study indicates that tree clearance negatively affects fledgling recruitment to the Blue-fronted Amazon (Amazona aestiva) population. Repositório Alice
SEIXAS, G. H. F.; MOURAO, G..
he Blue-fronted Amazon (Amazona aestiva) is a Neotropical parrot with a large distribution in South America, including areas in Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina and Paraguay. A substantial part of the population of this parrot is concentrated in the Pantanal, a large wetland located in the center of South America. There, the clearing of forest and savannas has occurred through the years to accommodate beef-cattle pasture, and crops. Our objective was to understand the direct and indirect effects of time, availability of forest and savannas, and rainfall over the number of nestlings and fledged young of Blue-fronted Amazons inhabiting the southern Pantanal. We surveyed their nests from 1997 to 2018 and counted the number of nestlings produced and the number of...

Activity pattern and habitat selection by invasive wild boars (Sus scrofa) in brazilian agroecosystems. Repositório Alice
MARTINS, F. I.; MOURAO, G. de M.; CAMPOS, Z. M. da S.; PELLEGRIN, A. O.; SILVA, V. S..
Wild boar populations are rapidly spreading through midwest Brazil, causing crop damage, impacting biodiversity and, possibly, spreading diseases to livestock. Despite their threat, little is known about introduced populations in Brazilian agricultural landscapes. The critical lack of knowledge about basic aspects of wild boar spatial ecology led us to evaluate home range sizes, activity pattern and habitat selection in interface regions of agricultural crops and natural riparian forests. We captured and monitored seven individuals using global position system collars throughout 19 to 77 days. The home range sizes calculated by Minimum Convex Polygon and Biased Random Bridge Kernel ranged from 273 to 1253 ha (median = 497 ha) and from 129 to 779 ha (median...

Behavior of Layers under Different Light Sources Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Tavares,BO; Pereira,DF; Bueno,LGF; Silva,GF.
ABSTRACT Light is an important factor in the management of laying poultry. The ideal lamp spectrum that provides the best welfare conditions still needs to be determined. Wavelength and light intensity influence poultry behavior and their welfare. This study evaluated the influence of four lamps types with different light spectra on the behavior of seventy 52-week laying hens. Incandescent, fluorescent, and sodium and mercury vapor lamps were set in a different poultry house each and supplied similar light intensities. Layer behavior was video-recorded three times weekly using video cameras installed on the ceiling. The effects of different wavelengths emitted by the light sources on layer behavior were evaluated by the Kruskal-Wallis median test. Results...

Behavioral aspects of Helicoverpa armigera in the cotton vegetative phase. Repositório Alice
RODRIGUES, S. M. M.; SANTOS, N. do C.; PITTA, R. M.; CORASSA, J. de N..
Helicoverpa armigera (Hübner) is part of an important complex of insects-pests that attack the cotton crop. This study aimed to identify the preferential plant parts for the oviposition of moths, as well as the movement and feeding behavior of caterpillars, in the vegetative phase of the cotton cultivar BRS 369 RF. Plants emitting floral buds were used to study the oviposition behavior of moths. For this, a completely randomized design, with three treatments (adaxial and abaxial sides of the leaf and floral buds) and twenty replications (plants in pots), was used. In order to evaluate the behavior of the caterpillars in the cotton vegetative phase, another 3 × 5 factorial design, with nine replications, was used. The treatments were three ages (first,...

Discovery of underground shelters occupied by the Chacoan Marsh Rat after massive wildfires in Pantanal. Repositório Alice
SEMEDO, T. B. F; LIBARDI, G. S.; STRÜSSMANN, C.; BERLINCK, C. N.; TOMAS, W. M.; GARBINO, G. S. T..
Abstract: The drought and wildfires that swept through Pantanal, the major South American wetland, in 2020 severely impacted the local biota. The resilience of native species to these types of extreme events remains largely unknown. During post-wildfire surveys at recently affected sites, we found three burrows containing the semi-aquatic Chacoan marsh rats (Holochilus chacarius). We also found a callichthyid catfish (Hoplosternum sp.) and a trichodactylid crab (Dilocarcinus pagei) alive and co-habiting one of the burrows with H. chacarius. We report for the first time the use of underground structures with a flooded chamber by the Chacoan marsh rat. We discussed the importance of these burrows for post-fire survivorship and whether they may serve as...

Accurately quantifying species' area requirements is a prerequisite for effective area-based conservation. This typically involves collecting tracking data on species of interest and then conducting home range analyses. Problematically, autocorrelation in tracking data can result in space needs being severely underestimated. Based on the previous work, we hypothesized the magnitude of underestimation varies with body mass, a relationship that could have serious conservation implications. To evaluate this hypothesis for terrestrial mammals, we estimated home-range areas with global positioning system (GPS) locations from 757 individuals across 61 globally distributed mammalian species with body masses ranging from 0.4 to 4000 kg. We then applied blockcross...

Macroecological studies that require habitat suitability data for many species often derive this information from expert opinion. However, expert-based information is inherently subjective and thus prone to errors. The increasing availability of GPS tracking data offers opportunities to evaluate and supplement expert-based information with detailed empirical evidence. Here, we compared expert-based habitat suitability information from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with habitat suitability information derived from GPS-tracking data of 1,498 individuals from 49 mammal species.
