The bivalves collected in the Western Antarctic and Subantarctic waters by scientists of the Instituto Oceanográfico - USP during the Scientific Brazilian Expeditions to Antarctical-IX are characterised through its conchiliological features, illustrated and their occurrence plotted in maps. A species of bivalve collected by scuba divers of the IO-USP on the Napier Rock, Admiralty Bay, King George Island during the Expeditions XV and XVI is also considered in this work. Daylength is the major environmental factor affecting the seasonal photosynthetic performance of Antarctic macroalgae. For example, the "season anticipation" strategy of large brown algae such as Ascoseira mirabilis and Desmarestia menziesii are based on the ability of their photosynthetic apparatus to make use of the available irradiance at increasing daylengths in late winter-spring. The seasonal development and allocation of biomass along the lamina of A. mirabilis are related to a differential physiological activity in the plant. Thus, intra-thallus differentiation in O2-based photosynthesis and carbon fixation represents a morpho-functional adaptation that optimizes conversion of radiant energy to primary productivity. Among 26 species of Antarctic Cumacea sampled during the southern summer 1989/90 from benthic habitats in the Weddell Sea, four are described as new to science: Campylaspis ledoyeri spec. nov., Hemilamprops bacescui spec. nov., Paralamprops racovitzai spec. nov., and Leptostylis weddelli spec. nov. Abstract High resolution topography (HRT) surveys is an important tool to model landscapes, especially in zones subjected to strong environmental changes, such as Antarctica, where landform is highly influenced by cryoclasty and permafrost melting. The aim of this work was to obtain a high accurate DTM for Keller Peninsula, Maritime Antarctica. The survey study was assessed in the 2014/2015 and 2015/2016 during the austral summer, by using Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS). Snow on sea ice alters the properties of the underlying ice cover as well as associated physical and biological processes at the interfaces between atmosphere, sea ice, and ocean. The Antarctic snow cover persists during most of the year and contributes significantly to the sea-ice mass due to the widespread surface flooding and related snow-ice formation. Snow also enhances the sea-ice surface reflectivity of incoming shortwave radiation and determines therefore the amount of light being reflected, absorbed, and transmitted to the upper ocean. ABSTRACT Thraustochytrids are unicellular protists belonging to the Labyrinthulomycetes class, which are characterized by the presence of a high lipid content that could replace conventional fatty acids. They show a wide geographic distribution, however their diversity in the Antarctic Region is rather scarce. The analysis based on the complete sequence of 18S rRNA gene showed that strain 34-2 belongs to the species Thraustochytrium kinnei, with 99% identity. The total lipid profile shows a wide range of saturated fatty acids with abundance of palmitic acid (16:0), showing a range of 16.1-19.7%. Three new species of Anthoathecatae (Cnidaria, Hydrozoa) of the rare genus Clathrozoella Stechow, 1921, Clathrozoella abyssalis spec. nov., C. bathyalis spec. nov. and C. medeae spec. nov., are described from New Zealand and Antarctic waters. Along with the previously known C. drygalskii (Vanhöffen, 1910) the genus Clathrozoella now numbers four species. Details of the skeleton, hydranths, nematocysts and gonophores are described and discussed, as is also the position of the newly established family Clathrozoellidae. |

The type material of Oswaldella billardi Briggs, 1938, has been re-examined and a complete description and figures are presented. The study of that material has allowed to reconsider the systematic position of all the material previously assigned to O. billardi and to determine that part of it belongs to another species. Since it is clearly different from the remaining species of the genus, it is described as Oswaldella erratum spec. nov. Two species of the antarctic hydroid genus Oswaldella Stechow, 1919, are considered. The first, described by Stepan'yants (1979) as a subspecies, O. billardi shetlandica, has been raised to specific level and will henceforth be indicated as Oswaldella shetlandica Stepan'yants, 1979. A second species is described as Oswaldella elongata spec. nov. Jäderholm's type of Schizotricha antarctica, collected by the Swedish Antarctic Expedition 1901-1903, is redescribed from a syntype in the collections of the Swedish National Museum, Stockholm. The type lot of that species proved to be composite, the material best resembling Jäderholm's (1904, 1905) descriptions and figures has been designated as the syntype.
