Assay of antioxidant potential of two Aspergillus isolates by different methods under various physio-chemical conditions BJM
Arora,Daljit Singh; Chandra,Priyanka.
The objective of this work was to screen fungi isolated from soil of different areas of Punjab, India for antioxidant activity by dot blot assay and around 45% of fungal isolates demonstrated antioxidant potential. Two selected strains of Aspergillus spp (Aspergillus PR78 and Aspergillus PR66) showing quantitatively best antioxidant activity by DPPH assay were further tested for their reducing power, ferrous ion and nitric oxide ion scavenging activity, FRAP assay and total phenolic content. Different physio-chemical parameters were optimized for enhancement of the activity. This revealed stationary culture grown for 10 days at 25ºC at pH 7 to be the best for antioxidant activity. Sucrose in the medium as carbon source resulted in highest antioxidant...

Bioaccessibility of the bioactive compounds and antimicrobial activity of aqueous extracts of Physalis angulata L. Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Dias,Flayanna Gouveia Braga; Ferreira,Maria Jaiana Gomes; Silva,Larissa Morais Ribeiro da; Menezes,Rayanne Clécia de Sousa; Figueiredo,Evânia Altina Teixeira de.
ABSTRACT Plant diversity around the world, as well as the chemical variation, involves a large amount of bioactive substances. The use of plant extracts with biological properties appears as a viable and healthy alternative when compared to synthetic substances. In this context, the objective of this study was to evaluate the aqueous extracts of native and cultivated leaves of Physalis angulata L., as well as the influence of the extraction method on the bioaccessibility of bioactive compounds, antioxidant activity and antimicrobial activity. The extracts were obtained from the native and cultivated leaves of P. angulata using three different extraction methods: decoction, maceration and an ultrasound-assisted method. The analysis of variance showed...

Cichorium intybus from India: GC-MS Profiling, Phenolic Content and in vitro Antioxidant Capacity of Sequential Soxhlet Extracted Roasted Roots BABT
Singh,Ravinder; Chahal,Khushminder Kaur.
Abstract Research on the bio-activities and chemical composition of roasted C. intybus roots from India is very little. In present studies GC-MS analysis of volatile components of roasted C. intybus roots, phenolics and flavonoid content estimation and antioxidant potential of roasted C. intybus roots was carried out. Antioxidant potential was also evaluated using FRAP, DPPH, hydroxyl radical, nitric oxide and superoxide free radical scavenging method. Extracts were prepared by sequential Soxhlet extraction. GC-MS analysis of volatile components of roasted C. intybus root extracts revealed that 5-hydroxymethyl furfural was major volatile component in dichloromethane and methanol extract whereas lupeol and its derivative compounds were major constituents of...

Comparative analysis of citrus fruits for nutraceutical properties Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
REHMAN,Shams Ur; ABBASI,Kashif Sarfraz; QAYYUM,Abdul; JAHANGIR,Muhammad; SOHAIL,Asma; Nisa,Sobia; TAREEN,Muhammad Naveed; TAREEN,Muhammad Javed; SOPADE,Peter.
Abstract Fruits and vegetables (F and V) are valuable for their micronutrients, but many F and V in diverse growth areas have not been scientifically validated for these components. The nutraceutical characteristics of the pulp of eight citrus fruits grown in Pakistan were, therefore, investigated. Expectedly, the fruits differed in moisture (86.9-88.9%), ash (0.37-0.53%), pH (2.9-5.8), total soluble solids (8.1-13.7 °Brix), titratable acidity (7.9-13.1%), total sugars (5.1-8.8%), reducing sugars (2.8-4.3%), and non-reducing sugars (0.3-0.5%) contents. Potassium, sodium and magnesium were the major minerals, while iron, zinc and manganese were present in minor fractions in the pulps. Phytochemical analysis (total phenolic content, 132-243 µg/g GAE; total...

Compositional studies and biological activities of some mash bean (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) cultivars commonly consumed in Pakistan Biol. Res.
Zia-Ul-Haq,Muhammad; Ahmad,Shakeel; Bukhari,Shazia Anwer; Amarowicz,Ryszard; Ercisli,Sezai; Jaafar,Hawa ZE.
BACKGROUND: In recent years, the desire to adopt a healthy diet has drawn attention to legume seeds and food products derived from them. Mash bean is an important legume crop used in Pakistan however a systematic mapping of the chemical composition of mash bean seeds is lacking. Therefore seeds of four mash bean (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper, family Leguminoseae) cultivars (NARC-Mash-1, NARC-Mash-2, NARC-Mash-3, NARC-Mash-97) commonly consumed in Pakistan have been analyzed for their chemical composition, antioxidant potential and biological activities like inhibition of formation of advanced glycation end products (AGE) activity and tyrosinase inhibition activity. RESULTS: The investigated cultivars varied in terms of biochemical composition to various...

Domestic processing and storage on the physical-chemical characteristics of acerola juice (Malpighia glabra L.). Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Dala-Paula,Bruno Martins; Santos,Taís Pereira dos; Araújo,Laura de Souza; Bastos,Renata Rosane Andrade; Moraes,Juliana de Oliveira; Carbonera,Nádia.
ABSTRACT Acerola is a tropical fruit that stands out for its high content of ascorbic acid and phenolic compounds. However, there is currently a lack of information on the effects of the preparation and domestic storage of fruit juices, especially that of acerola. The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of different liquefying times (10, 30 and 50 s) and cold storage at 4 °C for 0, 24, 48 and 72 h in domestic acerola juice. In relation to such, physicochemical determinations were performed, including pH, total titratable acidity, antioxidant potential, contents of phenolic compounds and total flavonoids in juices produced from the whole fruit, the pulp and acerola seed extracts. Whole fruit juice, liquefied for 10 s, had the highest pH and...
