The quarantine policy decision-making process in Australia is subject to the principles of the World Trade Organisation's SPS Agreement. It is primarily based on the risks and associated economic costs accruing to producers in the event of disease entry. The costs of a quarantine measure in terms of forgone trade benefits are not considered. The impact associated with this asymmetric approach is identified by demonstrating the gains to consumers which may arise through liberalised markets using a case study of the Australian apple industry. A partial equilibrium analysis is used to show the impacts of apple market liberalisation, which can be expected to yield gains to consumers which are greater than the economic costs to on producers. |

In Tunisia, the apples occupy a significant place on the sector of perennial crops. This crop covered expanded areas during the eighties following an extensive use of efficient water equipments. However, significant seasonal and annual variation of fruit supplies in the domestic market were frequently encountered affecting prices at both wholesale and consumption levels. To study the supply response of apples we carried out an econometric estimate of the model of supply response. Modelling was carried out in two stages: determination of the variation of the surfaces, on the basis of equation of news plantations and the equation of removals, and the variation of yields. The methodological approach that we followed takes account of the characteristics and... |

Anti-hail nets may change the microclimate of orchards and hence modify the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of fruits. The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of anti-hail nets on the physical, chemical, and sensory attributes of apples grown in southern Brazil. The study was conducted in commercial orchards, with apples grown under a black anti-hail net under an open sky during the 2008/2009, 2009/2010, and 2010/2011 cycles. Measurements of photosynthetically active radiation were collected at both sites. Physical, chemical, and sensory analyses of fruits were performed in the laboratory. The anti-hail net reduced incident photosynthetically active radiation by 32 %. The light spectrum in the canopy changed the corresponding R/FR... |

Abstract Key message MdoDHN11 acts in the nucellus layer to protect the embryo and the endosperm from limited water availability during apple seed development.AbstractDehydrins (DHNs) are protective proteins related to several plant developmental responses that involve dehy-dration such as seed desiccation and abiotic stresses. In apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.), the seed-specific MdoDHN11was suggested to play important roles against dehydration during seed development. However, this hypothesis has not yet been evaluated. Within this context, several experiments were performed to functionally characterize MdoDHN11. In situ hybridization analysis during apple seed development showed that MdoDHN11 expression is confined to a maternal tissue called nucellus,... |

Hypothetical bias is a persistent problem in stated preference studies. We propose and test a method for reducing hypothetical bias based on the cognitive dissonance literature in social psychology. A central element of this literature is that people prefer not to take inconsistent stands and will change their attitudes and behavior to make them consistent. We find that participants in a stated preference willingness-to-pay study, when told that a nonhypothetical study of similar goods would follow, state significantly lower willingness to pay than participants not so informed. In other words, participants adjust their stated willingness to pay to avoid cognitive dissonance from taking inconsistent stands on their willingness to pay for the good being... |

The present study aimed to evaluate the accumulation and distribution of Cu and Zn fractions in the profile of an Inceptisol by application of fungicides with a previous history of apple cultivation in southern Brazil. Stratified soil samples (0.0 ? 0.025 m, 0.025 ?0.050 m, 0.05 ? 0.10 m, 0.10 ? 0.15 m, 0.15 ? 0.20 m and 0.20 ? 0.40 m depth) were collected in two apple orchards (8 years old and 18 years old), and in a native pasture area adjacent to the orchards. The soil was subjected to analysis of physical and chemical properties and to chemical fractionation of Cu and Zn. The fractions of soluble, exchangeable, organic, residual and total Cu and Zn accumulated in the topsoil (0.0 ? 0.025 m) of the orchards, being higher in the orchard cultivated for 18... |
