A bumblefoot outbreak with different prognosis according to host species was studied in captive aquatic avian species. Six wood ducks (Aix sponsa), three scarlet-ibis (Eudocimus ruber), two black-swans (Cygnus atratus), five white-faced ducks (Dendrocygna viduata) and two roseate spoonbills (Platalea ajaja) were kept in a common pen with abrasive pavement pond margin, predisposing to podal skin wear. Incoordination and mortality occurred in the two roseate spoonbils and one black swan. Coagulase-positive penicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from the synovial fluid and from the liver. All birds sharing the pen presented active or cicatricial foot lesions, indicating a possible challenge to the environmental Staphylococci. However, except... |

It is five in the morning as residents of Utete in Rufiji District in Tanzania brace the morning chill to participate in the bird watching walk. Led by the District Commissioner Brigadier Hemed, they are joining the world in celebrating the World Wetlands Day that is dedicated to sustainable management of wetlands and associated resources. |

Predation on seabirds by fur seals and sea lions (Otariidae) has been widely reported (Glegg 1945, Hamilton 1946, Spellerberg 1975, Bonner 1981, Bonner & Hunter 1982, Lucas & McLaren 1988, Gjertz 1990, Riedman 1990). The incidents were, however, at low levels of intensity and the predatory behaviour appeared to have been restricted to small subgroups. Penguins (Spheniscidae) and auks (Alcidae) are the families most commonly preyed upon, whereas petrels (Procellariidae), ducks (Anatidae), gulls (Laridae), and other bird families have been occasionally reported as prey. Curiously, seal predation on seabirds was not discussed by Burger (1988), in a major review of marine homoiotherm interactions. |

Djoudj National Bird Park is an area of 16,000ha adjacent to the Diawling National Park in Mauritania along the Senegal River. Created in 1971, the park was declared a Ramsar site in 1980 and a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1981. Djoudj is part of a network of wetlands in West Africa south of the Sahara. The different sites (Banc d'Arguin National Park and Diawling National Park in Mauritania; and Djoudj National Park, Trois Marigots, Ndiael, Marigot of Rosso, the Gueumbeul Reserve, the Langue de Barbarie in Senegal) are interconnected by the erratic movements of their migratory birds. This western network of wetlands is ecologically connected to the Inner Niger Delta. For example, the Lesser Flamingo, Phoenicopterus minor, is typically seen in the Senegal... |

ABSTRACT Neotropical amphibians play important roles as preys and predators in freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems. The subfamily Pseudinae includes small and medium-sized frogs within three genera representing 13 valid species. Most published records of predation on Pseudinae frogs are anecdotic and scarce. Herein, we provide five new reports of predation and presenting a detailed literature review on Pseudinae predation, with 15 studies published between 1983-2017. Pseudinae species were preyed at both day and night by a wide variety of predators, principally birds. Adults were preyed upon more frequently than juveniles and tadpoles. In the present study, most predators were diurnal, with birds accounting for most records. A variety of invertebrates... |

Livers from 108 birds found prostrate or dead in Ilha Grande Bay between 2005 and 2010 were analyzed for 16 PCB congeners (IUPAC numbers 8, 18, 28, 31, 52, 77, 101, 118, 126, 128, 138, 149, 153, 169, 170, and 180). The species analyzed were Egretta caerulea(Linnaeus 1758), Nycticorax nycticorax (Linnaeus 1758),Egretta thula (Molina 1782), and Ardea cocoi(Linnaeus 1766). The analysis were performed using Origin software (7.5, 2004) with a significant level of p<0.05. Data were checked for adherence to the standard assumptions of parametric tests using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for normality and the Levene's test for homogeneity of variances. This has revealed differences in concentration for some congeners. Results indicate relatively low PCBs... |

The Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden represent a complex and unique tropical marine ecosystem. The Red Sea was formed by the northerly extension of the African rift valley system and is about 2,000 km long. The Gulf of Aden is a branch of the Indian Ocean and has a length of 1,400 km. The region has a remarkably high biological diversity and a high degree of endemism, particularly for fish and corals. Information available on seabirds for the region is limited, with the majority of studies carried out one to two decades ago. Accounts indicate that there are 17 true seabird species and 14 other water bird species. Among these birds the Jouanin’s petrel and swift tern have the smallest sub-populations. The white-eyed gull, endemic to the Red Sea and Gulf of... |

Between September 2001 and September 2002, Ultima Esperanza fjord and Señoret Channel were surveyed, sailing from Puerto Natales. Information on abundance, structure and distribution of aquatic and land birds observed during the sail is presented. We found 30 species of aquatic birds and 3 land birds.: 1 In Danger, 3 Vulnerables and 1 Insufficiently known. Our analysis shows that these fjords contained one of the biggest winter abundance of birds of the region and is a nesting area for many species. Furthermore, we proposed that the fjord constitute a core area for aquatic birds in summer when fresh water lagoons and ponds get dry. Finally, we make special reference to the need to implement a management plan in the area. |
