This study is an attempt to produce an assessment of the impact of shrimp aquaculture in the Mekong Delta (Viet Nam) on mangrove ecosystems. For this exercise we selected two sub-areas (Ca Mau and Tra Vinh provinces) encompassing a variety of land uses and ecological conditions. Twenty stations in Tra Vinh and 15 stations in Ca Mau have been surveyed several times from September 2000 to March 2002. Field investigations included mangrove soils studies, measurements of pH and salinity of the water, analysis of mangrove flora, and density and structure of the vegetation. SHORT-TERM VARIATION OF BACTERIAL COMMUNITIES CONCENTRATION AND ACTIVITY IN AQUACULTURE ECOSYSTEMS. Two kinds of short-term experiments were carried out on sea-water bacterial communities of shrimp aquaculture in Polynesia at the Centre Océanologique du Pacifique (Tahiti). A 12 m3 sea-water tank was considered. The objective of this study was to create new products using fish residues as well as to reduce environmental pollution, thus preventing the waste of nutrients, reduction of costs involved in the animal feed production chain and in organic agriculture, to be indirectly used as human food. With added value and increased food safety, these new products can be used as supplements for traditional fish meals, resulting in an immediate reduction in the importation of this ingredient essential for agribusiness. Results showed that the resulting organic meals have low production cost and high biological value regarding essential amino acids, fatty acids, minerals and vitamins, providing an alternative to solve the environment problem related to fish residues. |

Recirculation of the water of fish rearing systems requires a biological treatment based on the nitrifying activity of autotrophic bacteria. In parallel heterotrophic bacterial populations utilise the organic substrate, produced by the fish, to grow. Opposite to the autotrophic populations, the heterotrophic bacteria (1) have a quick growth and (2) might contain fish pathogenic strains. To develop and implement a more adequate strategy to farm fish, it is crucial to understand the bacterial-resistance levels and their transference dynamics.
