Abundance of epigaeic arthropods in a Brazilian savanna under different fire frequencies Rev. Bras. Zool.
Uehara-Prado,Marcio; Bello,Ayr de M.; Fernandes,Juliana de O.; Santos,Adalberto J.; Silva,Igor A.; Cianciaruso,Marcus V..
Fire is a major determinant of structure and dynamics in savannas, and the rapid increase of human activities in this biome has changed the natural burning regime. The effects of fire on the fauna of the cerrado (Brazilian savanna) are still poorly understood, and studies comparing sites frequently and infrequently burned are scarce. In this study, the abundance of epigaeic arthropod orders and trophic guilds was assessed in cerrado sites located in the Brazilian Central Plateau that were subjected to three burning frequencies: frequent (HighFi), intermediary (MidFi), and infrequent (LowFi). In general, we found a positive relationship between the abundance of epigaeic arthropods and fire frequency. When arthropods were analyzed by orders, the abundance of...

Silva,Ester A.; Oliveira,José V.; Gondim Jr.,Manoel G. C.; Menezes,Dimas.

Comparative studies in Chelicerata IV. Apatellata, Arachnida, Scorpionida, Xiphosura Naturalis
Hammen, L. van der.
A comparative study is made of four chelicerate classes: Apatellata (Solifugae and Pseudoscorpionida), Arachnida s. str. (both groups of Uropygi, i.e. Holopeltida and Schizomida, Amblypygi and Araneida), Scorpionida and Xiphosura. Methods, principles and terminology, adopted in this paper, correspond with those of parts I -111 of the present series of comparative studies in Chelicerata. Special attention is paid to segmentation of the body, respiratory organs, orifices of coxal glands, mouthparts, and appendages. The evolution of these structures is studied, and the relationships of the chelicerate classes and subclasses are reinvestigated and discussed.

In memoriam Prof. Dr J.T. Wiebes (1931-1999), evolutionary biologist and systematic entomologist Naturalis
Bruggen, A.C. van; Achterberg, C. van.
Born on 13 September 1931 in Rotterdam, Jacobus Theodorus [Koos] Wiebes read biology at Leiden University where he obtained his Ph.D. in 1963 on studies of Indo-Australian fig wasps. He started working on spiders (Lycosidae, Pisauridae) and beetles (Carabidae, Cetoniidae, Helodidae), but he earned his scientific reputation as a specialist in fig wasps (Hymenoptera: Agaonidae, Torymidae), their parasitoids and intricate host relationships (1961-1994: 89 papers). He served for many years on the staff of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden (1955-1970, initially as assistant, later as curator of Coleoptera and as assistant director since 1965), to return as director of the newly merged national zoology and geology museums (ad interim 1982-1984,...

Ionizing radiation quarantine treatments Anais da SEB
Hallman,Guy J..
Irradiation is a viable quarantine disinfestation treatment which has been studied for 40 years although it has received very little commercial use. Two principal obstacles to commercial application, 1) the fact that insects are not killed immediately, and 2) consumer opposition to irradiation, have been allayed to some extent, but the remaining impediment to large-scale commercial use is development of approved protocols by government regulatory agencies in importing countries. The United States Department of Agriculture has taken the first step by allowing for the movement of a number of quarantined fruits from Hawaii to the rest of the country following irradiation treatment. The measures of efficacy of irradiation disinfestation treatments should be...

Mitotic and meiotic chromosomes of a southern Brazilian population of Boophilus microplus (Acari, Ixodidae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Garcia,Rosane Nunes; Garcia-Fernandez,Casemiro; Garcia,Sonia Maria Lauer; Valente,Vera Lúcia S..
Using conventional staining with acetic orcein and C-banding techniques it was investigated constitutive heterochromatin chromosomal polymorphisms and the mitotic and the meiotic behavior of male and female chromosomes of Boophilus microplus (Canestrini, 1887). Some differences were detected in the population of southern Brazil as compared to the data of other authors for populations in other latitudes. The differences being mainly concerned with the distribution of constitutive centromeric heterochromatin and variation in the length of heterochromatic blocks in the pericentromeric regions of some chromosome pairs.

New species of Alpaida (Araneae, Araneidae) from Rondônia, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Nogueira,André A.; Dias,Stefan R..
ABSTRACT We described a new species of spider, Alpaida clarindoi sp. nov. (Araneidae), from the southwestern Amazon forest. The new species is distinguished from most Alpaida by the presence of a pair of shoulders spines. Females can be separated from similar species by the subquadrangular shape of the epigynum, and males by the shape of the terminal apophysis and the tegulum, which possess an apical pointed tip. Alpaida clarindoi sp. nov. is described based on both sexes.

On a new species of the genus Simlops (Araneae, Oonopidae) from Guyana, with notes on the bodanus group of species Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Feitosa,Níthomas M.; Bonaldo,Alexandre B..
ABSTRACT A new species of Simlops Bonaldo, Ott & Ruiz, 2014, S. kartabo sp. nov., from Guyana is described. The new species belongs to the putatively basal bodanus species group, sharing with other species of the group a relatively simple embolar distal third. The presence of a filiform accessory process on the conductor, previously evidenced only for S. guatopo Brescovit, 2014 is also identified here for S. bodanus (Chickering, 1968), S. guyanensis Santos, 2014 and S. kartabo sp. nov. and may support the monophyly of the bodanus group.

On the identity of the type species of Actinopus tarsalis (Araneae: Actinopodidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Miglio,Laura T.; Lucas,Sylvia M.; Bonaldo,Alexandre B..
The type species of the Neotropical Actinopus, A. tarsalis Perty, 1833, is redescribed based on material from the type locality, the state of Piauí, Brazil. The species appears to be restricted to northeastern Brazil and is newly recorded from the state of Sergipe. An old record from the state of Rio Grande do Sul is rejected. Actinopus tarsalis differs from other species of the genus by details of the male copulatory bulb: tegular apophysis absent, robust embolar base, inserted basally at a right angle (90°); embolar apices apex flattened and expanded, arrow-shaped in dorsal view.

Redescription of Avicularia taunayi and notes on its habitat and geographical distribution (Araneae: Theraphosidae: Aviculariinae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Bertani,Rogério; Motta,Paulo Cesar.
We redescribe the poorly known tarantula species Avicularia taunayi (Mello-Leitão, 1920) and present information on its geographical distribution and habits. The spermatheca of the female is unusual for the genus: short, broad, with a median slight curvature and lobes on its basal, median and distal portions. The male resembles other Avicularia species but can be distinguished by the presence of a tibial apophysis on leg I in conjunction with legs I and IV having roughly the same length and the presence of pale rings on the distal femora, tibiae and metatarsi. Additionally, males and females have three pairs of light brown spots extending from the dorsum to the lateral region of the abdomen. Avicularia taunayi is found in the Brazilian Cerrado, a...
