Catches of pelagic fish associated to anchored Fish Aggregating Devices have been responsible for increases in income, fish consumption, and even cultural identity of artisanal fishing communities in many developing countries worldwide. Nonetheless, in Brazil, aFAD fishing is still poorly developed and studied. In this experiment, FADs were anchored offshore the city of Recife (Northeastern Brazil) to investigate the potential of moored buoys in the aggregation of commercially important pelagic species near the coast, as an alternative fishing site for artisanal fishers. The behavior of acoustically tagged fish was investigated to assess whether they were attracted to the FADs and how long they remained associated to them. The results indicated that,... |

The Mediterranean small-scale fleet is highly adaptive, showing a dynamic fishing intensity and strategy, and exploiting seasonal abundant resources. In this area, the aggregatory behaviour under floats of juvenile fish has been used since ancient times to exploit oceanic migratory species such as dolphinfish (Coryphaena hippurus), using Fish Aggregating anchored Devices (fads). A total of 2 300 boats are engaged in this fishery from August to December, the main fishing areas being those around Malta, Tunisia, Sicily and Majorca. The fads ( arrow right m2) are made of different cheap floating materials, and are moored in fixed places, ranging from shore waters to areas 60 miles off the coast (1 500 m depth). Each boat deploys an average of 20 to 100 fads.... |

Commonly adopted approaches to managing small-scale fisheries (SSFs) in developing countries do not ensure sustainability. Progress is impeded by a gap between innovative SSF research and slower-moving SSF management. The paper aims to bridge the gap by showing that the three primary bases of SSF management--ecosystem, stakeholders’ rights and resilience--are mutually consistent and complementary. It nominates the ecosystem approach as an appropriate starting point because it is established in national and international law and policy. Within this approach, the emerging resilience perspective and associated concepts of adaptive management and institutional learning can move management beyond traditional control and resource-use optimization, which largely... |

The aim of this study was to determine the characteristics, dimensions, materials used in the fishing gear and boats currently used by the artisanal fisheries along the ecuadorian coast. Three provinces were visited (Guayas, Manabí and Esmeraldas), in which the artisanal ports with the greatest fishing effort and landings along the coast are registered. Interviews with the fishermen, identification of the fishing gear and certain measurements were taken to obtain the information on the desing, dimensions and materials used in the fishing gear as well as the techniques and principal fishing zones. Aditionally the diversity of the fishing boats was noted varying from small sailing rafts to the fast-glass boats with outboard engines. |

This paper deals with the design and application of different fishing gears tested in the Beagle Channel (Tierra del Fuego, Argentina) with the supervision of the technical personnel of INIDEP Fishing Gear Group, the support of the General Directorate of Natural Resources (known today as SRNyAH) of Tierra del Fuego, Antártida e Islas del Atlántico Sur Province and the participation of local fishermen. Activities started as a result of an agreement between the INIDEP and the SRNyAH ratified in 1994. The fishing gear tested, which consist of two paired midwater trawl nets, a gill net, a surrounding net, a bottom lingline, a pot for kingklip and a line of octopus traps may be used in vessels ranging from 30 to 120 HP in coastal waters, channels and inland... |

The results of a census of fishing boats on Mahe Praslin and La Digue are presented in total 439 active fishing boats were counted of which 156 were pirogues, 196 were outboards, 68 were whalers and 19 were schooners. The details are discussed in relation to the catch assessment survey conducted by Seychelles fishing Authority. An evaluation of historical data follows. the number of pirogues and outboards increased up to 1986 and declined thereafter. The number of whalers steadily increased since1985 whilst the number of schooners has not changed significantly. It is argued that the changes in boat numbers are a results of interactions between the available near shore and offshore resources, the development of commercial opportunities through the... |

Monte Hermoso (Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina) is a tourist town inhabited by a large number of artisanal fishermen. The aim of this study was to characterize, through a descriptive analysis, the operational activity of the artisanal fleet and quantify the catches landed per species. The ships, of a trucker type, are 6-9 m length equipped with a 40-90 HP outboard motor. The data analyzed derive from purchase slips furnished by a gatherer corresponding to the November 2009-October 2010 period. The target species were stripped weakfish (Cynoscion guatucupa) and patagonian smoothhound (Mustelus schmitti). The former was caught with hand line throughout the year, essentially between September-December. The latter was fished during March-April and... |
