A Parliamentary Inquiry was launched in Western Australia (WA) in December 2017 into how to compensate farmers for economic loss due to contamination by genetically modified organisms (GMOs). The Inquiry was prompted by the Marsh v Baxter case. In May 2010, Michael Baxter planted Monsanto’s Roundup Ready GM canola at his farm near Kojonup in the wheat-belt of WA. Next door, farming 477 hectares, were organic farmers Steve and Sue Marsh. GM canola blew over the Marsh farm. The Marsh farm lost its organic certification due to GM contamination. Marsh sued Baxter for damages - the loss of the organic premium. The damages were agreed between the parties at A$85,000. In a protracted legal battle the legal fees amounted to more than A$2 million. Marsh lost the... |

Money is usually one of the strongest reasons influencing decision making when choosing between organic and conventional production or usage, both in case of producers and decision makers of municipalities. The results of the survey directed to organic producers in Finland implied that the contribution to profitability of organic farming would be the most effective way to get more farmers to make the decision to convert from conventional to organic production. Naturally there are also many other reasons that affect the decision to make the conversion, for example environmental and health issues. According to the survey targeted to municipalities’ decision makers, municipalities would use more organic products if they had more financial resources in use.... |

This document was prepared in the project «Development of guidelines for the use of pesticide analysis in organic inspection in the Czech Republic (sampling, evaluation and interpretation)». At the beginning of this project, a workshop with stakeholders was held. The present document builds on the outcomes of this workshop, and elaborates guidance for all stakeholders involved in Czech organic production and its control, on how to deal with residue analyses. In recognition of the European dimension of the problem, the project followed a two-step approach. In the first step, the present guideline was prepared. It is written in a general style and in the English language, so that it potentially applies for many countries. Although the current project aims... |

A certified organic farm has been developed for research and demonstration of organic production system for low rainfall/arid areas at central research farm, Central Arid ZOne Research Institute(CAZRI), Jodhpur,Rajasthan, INDIA. Rainwater harvesting, composting, enhancing agrodiversity, preparation of bio-pesticides are being done at farm. Improvement in fauna and flora diversity, soil organic carbon and other properties have been observed. Crop resilience increased to high climatic variability/changed climte. Presently research is going on to develop e system for high value crops of arid zone i.e. cumin, psyllium, sesame and cluster bean(Guar). Almost weekly, Farmers' groups visit and get hands on training on organic system. |

A recent Horizon 2020-call asked for research to phase out contentious inputs from organic agriculture. During 2018-2021, Organic-PLUS, led by Coventry University, UK will identify and evaluate such inputs, provide technical solutions to phase them out, and assess economic, environmental and social effects of such changes. The project is is funded as a Research and Innovation Action under Horizon 2020-SFS-08-2017. |

EGTOP (= the Expert Group for Technical advice on Organic Production) aims to provide advice to the European Commission concerning the authorisation of the use of products, substances and techniques in organic farming and processing, to develop or improve organic production rules and, more in general, on any other matter relating to the area of organic production. Frank Oudshoorn from SEGES, Denmark participates in EGTOP since 2018, and he is also active in several work packages in the Organic-PLUS Project. In this presentation, he described the work in EGTOP, where topics selected to be treated by this Group are described and analysed in a dossier, often written by appointed sub-Groups. EGTOP assesses the dossier and makes a decision (advice). Digestate,... |

Learning, diversity, trust and social networks are key aspects of adaptive capacity and thus for building resilience (Walker et al., 2004; Milestad et al., 2010). The organic value chains explored in HG were able to overcome challenges and grow into mid-scale initiatives because they had adaptive capacity. Thus, they were willing to learn and took the opportunities to learn in order to adjust activities. They used diversity as a strategy to spread risks and to keep options open. Trusting relationships and long-term partnerships with market partners and other actors was strived for and accomplished with extensive social networks. Coupled with professionalization of business and value management, as well as using available market partners to their advantage,... |
