Etude de la variabilité de la circulation du gyre subpolaire de l'Atlantique Nord à partir des données Ovide et de mesures satellitaires ArchiMer

The cyclonic circulation of the North Atlantic subpolar gyre, between 50°N and 63°N, plays a key role in the climate variability. The Ovide program contributes to the observation of the circulation in this region. A section is repeated every two years in summer since 2002 between Greenland and Portugal following a path close the Fourex 1997 section. To get transport estimates across the sections, a geostrophic box inverse model is used, constrained with direct current measurements. Our new estimates of Fourex transports show the need to use constraints temporally associated with the section to get transports estimates representative of the circulation at the section realisation dates. The main features of geodynamic evolution in the North Atlantic and the lithospheric plates surrounding it have been known for a quarter of a century now. However, a number of questions raised by the first models published have still not been clearly answered in detail. Among them, the difficulty in adjusting the domain to the north and the south of the Faeroe-Iceland-Greenland ridge should be highlighted. This study addresses the issue by using fracture zones as the main data for our reconstructions. We show that they accurately bound the kinematical reconstructions. Les Eaux Modales du gyre subpolaire de l'Atlantique Nord : origine, formation, variabilité ArchiMer

The subpolar Mode Waters of the North Atlantic ocean play a key role in the general oceanic surface circulation. Their life cycle has only been described from an average of observations over several decades. This description avoids the real time scale of this life cycle and smooths its variaribility. It also does not adress the setting the Mode Water properties. This thesis work deals with these aspects by analysing both the ORCA025-G70 model fields and the observations.The lagrangian analysis of the ORCA025-G70 fields highlights the key role of the North Atlantic current in the life cycle of the Mode Waters. OVIDE 2004. CO2 variables Report ArchiMer

The carbon system is defined by four variables: pH, Total Alkalinity (AT), partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2) and Total Inorganic Carbon (CT). The knowledge of two of these variables allows the calculation of the other two by means of a set of equations deduced from thermodynamic equilibrium. During the OVIDE 2004 cruise carried out between 5th June and 6th July on board the RN THALASSA pH and TA measurements were sampled fiom bottle depths at selected stations (Table 1) and analysed on board. Moreover, pCOz has been continuously detennined in surface waters along the vesse1 track. In this cruise, unlike OVIDE 2002, samples for CT were also taken, but will be analyzed at lab. Le nord de l'Atlantique Nord est le lieu de formation de l'eau profonde Nord Atlantique, composante essentielle de la circulation thermohaline. Le travail faisant l'objet du présent contrat avait pour objet de réaliser des mesures de composants biogéochimiques des masses d'eau le long d'une radiale allant du Groenland au Portugal en 2008 (section OVIDE). Les différentes composantes constituant l'eau profonde Nord Atlantique ont été échantillonnées. Ces mesures complètent des observations déjà effectuées par la même équipe en 2002,2004 et 2006. La mise en perspective temporelle de l'ensemble de ces données donne des informations sur la variabilité des masses d'eau océanique et par extension de la circulation.

Devant le problème du réchauffement planétaire, il est indispensable d'approfondir notre compréhension des mécanismes et des rétroactions qui régulent le climat pour pouvoir prédire les conséquences de tels changements. L'étude des climats passés permet de mettre en évidence la façon dont les événements climatiques s'encharnent. En particulier, étudier des périodes plus chaudes que l'actuelle permet de mieux comprendre ce vers quoi nous semblons nous diriger.
