Age of nurse bees and brood rearing National Institute of Agronomic Research
Haydak, Mykola H..
Nurse bees were forced to rear brood continuously, under field and laboratory conditions. The weight and the length of life of the bees they reared decreased when the nurse bees were much older than is normal (40-98 days instead of 5-16 days). Intestines of emerged bees reared by nurse bees 50 days old and more were very fragile. In the control colonies these phenomena were not observed.

Distribution of honeybees on brood National Institute of Agronomic Research
Furgala, B.; Boch, R..
It is generally accepted that caste determination in the honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) is a result of differences in the composition of the larval food. It has been assumed that the glandular secretions of the nurse bee, and the type and age of larvae fed, may change as the nurse bee becomes older. Free (1960) recently investigated this possibility by comparing the distribution of bees of known ages on combs containing brood of known ages. We approached this question in a similar manner. The following is a preliminary account of some of our results.

E-beta-Ocimene, a volatile brood pheromone involved in social regulation in the honey bee colony (Apis mellifera) Inra
Maisonnasse, A.; Lenoir, J.C.; Beslay, D.; Crauser, D.; Le Conte, Y..
Background: In honey bee colony, the brood is able to manipulate and chemically control the workers in order to sustaintheir own development. A brood ester pheromone produced primarily by old larvae (4 and 5 days old larvae) was firstidentified as acting as a contact pheromone with specific effects on nurses in the colony. More recently a new volatile broodpheromone has been identified: E-b-ocimene, which partially inhibits ovary development in workers.Methodology and Principal Finding: Our analysis of E-b-ocimene production revealed that young brood (newly hatched to3 days old) produce the highest quantity of E-b-ocimene relative to their body weight. By testing the potential action of thismolecule as a non-specific larval signal, due to its high...

Influence of storage on the nutritive value of pollen for brood rearing by honeybees National Institute of Agronomic Research
Haydak, M.H..
Small colonies of emerged bees were kept in confinement, and fed fresh pollen, or pollen two years old supplemented with: nothing, pantothenic acid, 20% dried brewers yeast, 20% vitamin-free casein, casein plus pantothenic acid. The number of sealed brood cells in these colonies (in the above order) was 8-9,l-0,2-8,4-4,5-6, and 5-8 times the number in the colonies fed old pollen alone. Deterioration of proteins and of pantothenic acid is thus partially responsible for the inferior value of stored pollen for brood rearing.

The influence of stored pollen and of colony size on the brood rearing of honeybees National Institute of Agronomic Research
Allen, M.D.; Jeffree, E.P..
Four hundred and thirty records of the numbers of bees in honeybee colonies and of the amounts of brood and pollen present have been kept during various months of the years 1945-53, and the data have been used to calculate total and partial regression coefficients showing the influence of stored pollen and of colony size on brood rearing throughout the year. It was found that pollen storage and colony size were correlated but that, even allowing for this, colony size and pollen both independently influenced brood rearing. The annual distribution of the total regression coefficients of brood on pollen was somewhat similar to the brood curve itself, rising from a minimum in October and November to a maximum in midsummer, while the partial regression...
