ABSTRACT The use of dwarf lines to obtain mini-tomato hybrids has provided agronomic and economic benefits. In Brazil, round tomatoes predominate over other varieties. The benefits of using a dwarf parent in round tomato hybrids has yet to be explored, making it important to develop dwarf round tomato lines. Backcrossing is the most suitable method to develop these lines. Evaluation and selection of the dwarf populations can improve the development of such lines. The cytogenetic characteristics of Pseudoplatystoma corruscans and Pseudoplatystoma reticulatum and their F1, F2 and backcross hybrids were assessed by using chromosome banding techniques. The diploid number of 56 chromosomes was constant in all species and lineages, with a karyotypic formula containing 20 metacentric, 12 submetacentric, 12 subtelocentric and 12 acrocentric chromosomes. Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were identified in two subtelocentric chromosomes in the parents and hybrids, with partial nucleolar dominance in F1 and F2 specimens. Abstract ? The objective of this work was to develop new irrigated rice lines tolerant to imidazolinone herbicides. The backcross breeding procedure was used to transfer the imidazolinone tolerance allele from mutant 93AS3510 to the recurrent parents 'BRS 7 Taim' and 'BRS Pelota'. Individual herbicide-tolerant plants were selected in each generation, for three backcrossings (RC1 to RC3), followed by three selfing generations (RC3F1 to RC3F3). The best four RC3F3 lines for agronomic traits were genotyped with 44 microsatellite markers. The observed conversion index of the new imidazolinone-tolerant lines varied from 91.86 to 97.67%. Evaluation of high quality protein maize (QPM) hybrids obtained by conversion of normal inbred lines. Repositório Alice

Two experimental QPM hybrids obtained by lhe partial conversion of three elite inbred lines by modified backcrossing were evaluated and compared to the normal versions of the same hybrids. Thirteen agronomic and 12 grain quality traits were evaluated. The hybrids were also anaJyzed by SSR markers in order to evaluate the genetic relationship among them. Results demonstrated that the converted QPM hybrids presented a better protein quality and a similar agronomic performance for most of the evaluated traits, including grain yield, in comparison to their normal versions. However, some of the deficiencies generally ascribed to QPM hybrids, such as a higher lodgíng percentage, thicker cobs, and shorter kernels were maintained up to this stage of the conversion...

Wheat grain yellow pigment content (GYPC) is an important trait that determines pasta quality. The main objective of this review is to examine the genetics regulating GYPC to enhance it through breeding, leading to improved pasta quality. Although GYPC is a polygenic trait, its high heritability has facilitated breeding internationally. The backcrosses of dihaploid Solanum tuberosum with wild species hybrids generating tetraploids progenies require the formation of non-reduced pollen. In this work, the mechanisms responsible for the formation of 2n pollen in 28 dihaploid Solanum tuberosum x Solanum chacoense hybrids were studied. Four mechanisms were found: parallelspindles (ps), fused spindles (fs), premature cytokinesis-1 (pc-1) and premature cytokinesis-2 (pc-2). The ps mechanism was the most frequent, being found in 23 of the 28 assessed clones. The ps and fs mechanisms led to the formation of dyads by first division restitution (FDR), transferring about 80% of the heterozygosity to the progenies.
