Sepsis, the leading cause of death in intensive care units, is associated with overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) due to inducible NO synthase (iNOS), responsible for some of the pathologic changes. Aminoguanidine (AG) is a selective iNOS inhibitor with reported inconsistent actions in sepsis. To investigate the influence of iNOS, we studied models of acute bacterial sepsis using acute challenges with aerobic (Escherichia coli) and anaerobic (Bacteroides fragilis) bacteria in the presence of AG. Six-week-old, 23 g, male and female BALB/c and C57Bl/6j mice, in equal proportions, were inoculated (ip) with bacteria in groups of 4 animals for each dose and each experiment in the absence or presence of AG (50 mg/kg, ip, starting 24 h before challenge and daily... |

Abstract: The present work aimed to study the antimicrobial resistance profile of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from goal milk. Two hundred and twelve samples of goat milk were used for the microbiological analyses. In ten (4.7%) of these samples, strains of Staphylococcus aureus were isolated. The susceptibility of the strains of S. aureus was assayed by the disc diffusion method. The antibiotics tested were: Ampicillin-10?g (AMP), Chloramphenicol-30?g (CHL), Tetracycline-30?g (TET), Gentamicin-10?g (GEN), Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole-25?g (SXT), Erythromycin-30?g (ERY), Cefoxitin-30?g (CFO), Ciprofloxacin-05?g (CIP), Penicillin-10? (PEN)), Clindamycin-02?g (CLI), Azithromycin-15?g (AZM), Rifampicin-05?g (RIF) and Linezolid 30?g (LZD). The resistance of... |

Bacterial isolates were obtained from mortality events affecting Mytilus edulis and reported by professionals in 2010-2013 or from mussel microflora. Experimental infections allowed the selection of two isolates affiliated to V. splendidus/V. hemicentroti type strains: a virulent 10/068 1T1 (76,6% and 90% mortalities in 24h and 96h) and an innocuous 12/056 M24T1 (0% and 23,3% in 24h and 96h). These two strains were GFP-tagged and validated for their growth characteristics and virulence as genuine models for exposure. Then, host cellular immune responses to the microbial invaders were assessed. In the presence of the virulent strain, hemocyte motility was instantaneously enhanced but markedly slowed down after 2h exposure. By contrast, hemocyte velocity... |

Background: Chlamydia abortus infections (Chlamydiosis) can cause reproductive problems in sheep, such as abortions and birth defects, leading to farm productivity loss. The symptoms, which are similar to other reproductive diseases, and the microbial pathogenesis make the clinical diagnosis difficult. Chlamydia abortus is a zoonotic pathogen, making it a public health issue because it can infect and induce abortions in humans. This study investigated anti-C. abortus antibody levels and infection risk factors in sheep in the State of Ceará, Brazil. Materials, Methods & Results: Forty-three properties from 10 municipalities in 4 mesoregions in the State of Ceará, Brazil (Sertões, metropolitan Fortaleza, North Ceará and Northwest Ceará) with sheep,... |

Background: Considering the importance of leptospirosis in sheep farming and public health and the significance of identifying which serogroups circulate in sheep within each region, the objective of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and spatial distribution of the most frequent serogroups causing infection by Leptospira sp. in ovine herds in the Northeast region of Brazil. Materials, Methods & Results: Blood samples were collected from 4197 sheep from 229 herds in 7 Northeastern States. Sera were analyzed via microscopic agglutination test (MAT). The frequency of seroreactive sheep for Leptospira sp. was 14.06%. The states of Alagoas, Ceará, Paraíba, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte, and Sergipe, located in the Caatinga biome, had the highest... |
