Accuracy of methods to estimate potential acidity and lime requirement in soils of west region of Santa Catarina Ciência Rural
Predebon,Rodrigo; Gatiboni,Luciano Colpo; Mumbach,Gilmar Luiz; Schmitt,Djalma Eugenio; Dall’Orsoletta,Daniel João; Brunetto,Gustavo.
ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to compare two methods of evaluation of potencial acidity (H+Al) and two methods to estimate liming requirement (LR) for soils from the west region of Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Fourteen soils were incubated with 7 lime rates for 120 days, obtaining the real values of H+Al at pH 7.0 and LR. These values were used as reference to evaluate the accuracy of two H+Al estimating methods: SMP buffer and calcium acetate at pH 7.0, and to evaluate the accuracy of two LR methods: base saturation (BS) and SMP index. On average, H+Al was underestimated in 6 and 40% by SMP and calcium acetate methods, respectively, especially in soils with high buffer capacity. The LR was underestimated in 20 and 30% by SMP index and BS,...

Changes in soil acidity and organic carbon in a sandy typic hapludalf after medium-term pig-slurry and deep-litter application Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Brunetto,Gustavo; Comin,Jucinei José; Schmitt,Djalma Eugênio; Guardini,Renato; Mezzari,Célito Pescador; Oliveira,Bruno Salvador; Moraes,Marcel Pires de; Gatiboni,Luciano Colpo; Lovato,Paulo Emilio; Ceretta,Carlos Alberto.
Successive applications of liquid swine waste to the soil can increase the contents of total organic carbon and nutrients and change acidity-related soil chemical properties. However, little information is available on the effects of swine waste application in solid form, as of swine deep-litter. The objective of this study was to evaluate alterations of organic carbon and acidity-related properties of a soil after eight years of pig slurry and deep-litter application. In the eighth year of a field experiment established in Braço do Norte, Santa Catarina (SC) on a sandy Typic Hapludalf samples were taken (layers 0-2.5; 2.5-5; 5-10; 10-15; 15-20 and 20-30 cm) from unfertilized plots and plots with pig slurry or deep-litter applications, providing the simple...

Characterization of the soil fertility and root system of restinga forests Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Bonilha,Rodolfo Martins; Casagrande,José Carlos; Soares,Marcio Roberto; Reis-Duarte,Rose Mary.
The Restinga vegetation consists of a mosaic of plant communities, which are defined by the characteristics of the substrates, resulting from the type and age of the depositional processes. This mosaic complex of vegetation types comprises restinga forest in advanced (high restinga) and medium regeneration stages (low restinga), each with particular differentiating vegetation characteristics. The climate along the coast is tropical (Köppen). Of all ecosystems of the Atlantic Forest, Restinga is the most fragile and susceptible to anthropic disturbances. Plants respond to soil characteristics with physiological and morphological modifications, resulting in changes in the architecture (spatial configuration) of the root system. The purpose of this study was...

Chemical properties of an oxisol under organic management as influenced by application of sugarcane bagasse ash Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Ferreira,Enderson Petrônio de Brito; Fageriae,Nand Kumar; Didonet,Agostinho Dirceu.
There are large areas of Oxisols in South America, including Brazil, with low fertility and acidity. To improve crop yields on these Oxisols, liming and fertilization is an essential practice. However, besides the high cost of fertilizers, chemical fertilizers cannot be used in organic production systems, except insoluble sources. Ash is one of the alternative source of supplying macro and micronutrients. A field experiment was conducted, in a completely randomized block design in a factorial arrangement (three sources of ash x four rates) resulting on 12 treatments, to evaluate the effect of source and rate of ash application on soil chemical properties. The treatments consisted of three sources (bagasse, bagasse+PJ07-A and bagasse+PJ07-RA) of sugarcane...

Correction of soil acidity in the subsurface of an oxisol with sandy loam texture under no-tillage Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Rossato,Otavio Bagiotto; Ceretta,Carlos Alberto; Silva,Leandro Souza da; Brunetto,Gustavo; Adorna,Jaqueline Cristiane; Girotto,Eduardo; Lorenzi,Cledimar Rogério.
In Rio Grande do Sul State (RS), Southern Brazil, aluminum saturation in many areas under no-till system is high and base saturation low in the 0.10-0.20 m layer (subsurface), which may reduce the grain yield of annual crops. The objective of this study was to evaluate if the occurrence of high aluminum saturation and low base saturation in the subsurface, under a no-till system, represents a restrictive environment for crop production, as well as to evaluate forms of lime incorporation for soil acidity correction in the subsurface. For this purpose, an experiment was carried out with soybean (2005/2006), corn (2006/2007), wheat (2007) and soybean (2007/2008) crops, in a Rhodic Hapludox (USDA, 1999) with sandy loam texture, under no-till for four years in...

Crop Response to Gypsum Application to Subtropical Soils Under No-Till in Brazil: a Systematic Review Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Tiecher,Tales; Pias,Osmar Henrique de Castro; Bayer,Cimélio; Martins,Amanda Posselt; Denardin,Luiz Gustavo de Oliveira; Anghinoni,Ibanor.
ABSTRACT The use of gypsum to improve the root environment in tropical soils in the southeastern and central-western regions of Brazil is a widespread practice with well-established recommendation criteria. However, only recently gypsum began to be used on subtropical soils in South of Brazil, so available knowledge of its effect on crop yield is incipient and mainly for soils under no-till (NT) systems. Avaiable studies span a wide range of responses, from a substantial increase to a slight reduction in crop yield. Also, the specific conditions leading to a favorable effect of gypsum application on crop yield are yet to be accurately identified. The primary objectives of this study were to examine previously reported results to assess the likelihood of a...

Liming and fertilization to restore degraded Brachiaria decumbens pastures grown on an entisol Scientia Agricola
Oliveira,Patrícia Perondi Anchão; Boaretto,Antonio Enedi; Trivelin,Paulo Cesar Ocheuze; Oliveira,Wladecir Salles de; Corsi,Moacyr.
The reconstitution of soil fertility is essential in the process of pasture restoring, liming being the first action to be taken in this direction. The liming recommendation for pastures needs more technical information as the application method and rate. A field experiment was carried out to evaluate the liming and fertilization practices to restore a degraded Brachiaria decumbens pasture. The following factors were studied: liming method (incorporated in soil by disking or not); level of base saturation (40, 50 or 80%) and lime type (55, 70 or 90 of ECC). Liming and fertilization (NPK and micronutrients) increased both the forage yield and its root system, these being more evident in the second year, even using the same rates of lime and fertilizer used...

Mitigation of the Gradient of Chemical Properties in the Rooting Zone of Dystrophic Oxisols by Gypsum and Lime Inputs under a No-Till System Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Nora,Douglas Dalla; Amado,Telmo Jorge Carneiro; Nicoloso,Rodrigo da Silveira; Mazuco,Antonio Cesar Batista; Piccin,Marcieli.
ABSTRACT Improvement of soil chemical properties in dystrophic Oxisols managed under long-term no-tillage system (NTS) with surface broadcast lime has been, frequently, restricted to a shallow topsoil layer. As a consequence, a sharply-defined chemical quality gradient is created, with deterioration from the surface towards deeper layers in Oxisols in southern Brazil. The aim of this study was to assess the temporal effects of gypsum, applied alone or in combination with lime, on Ca2+ content and Al3+ saturation in the rooting zone (RZ) (0.00-0.40 m). Four experiments were conducted from 2009 to 2014 in Typic Hapludox soils with distinct chemical qualities in the RZ managed under a long-term NTS (over 20 years) in Rio Grande do Sul (subtropical region). A...

Modern High-Yielding Maize, Wheat and Soybean Cultivars in Response to Gypsum and Lime Application on No-Till Oxisol Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Nora,Douglas Dalla; Amado,Telmo Jorge Carneiro; Nicoloso,Rodrigo da Silveira; Gruhn,Eduardo Müller.
ABSTRACT Modern maize, wheat, and soybean cultivars are usually characterized by a short cycle, high shoot-root ratio, and high responsiveness to nutrient input. Continuous no-tillage management (NTS) frequently leads to a steep gradient in soil chemical quality with depth, thus decreasing yield under conditions of acid subsoil and water stress. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of gypsum, applied separately or in combination with lime, on the yield of cultivars used in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The study consisted of four experiments conducted on a typic Hapludox under NTS. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with three replications. Experiments I and II were carried out on soils with a satisfactory chemical soil...

Lourenzi,Cledimar Rogério; Ceretta,Carlos Alberto; Silva,Leandro Souza da; Trentin,Gustavo; Girotto,Eduardo; Lorensini,Felipe; Tiecher,Tadeu Luis; Brunetto,Gustavo.
Pig slurry application as soil manure can alter the chemical properties of the soil and affect its acidity, modifying the environment for crop growth and development. The objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical properties related to soil acidity subjected to successive applications of pig slurry. The experiment was conducted in May 2000, in an experimental area of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM) under no-tillage and lasted until January 2008. Nineteen surface applications of 0, 20, 40, and 80 m³ ha-1 of pig slurry were performed, during a period of 100 months and the soil sampled in the end (layers 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10, 10-12, 12-14, 14-16, 16-18, 18-20, 20-25, 25-30, 30-35, 35-40, 40-50 and 50-60 cm). The application of pig...
