Alexandrium ostenfeldii growth and spirolide production in batch culture and photobioreactor ArchiMer
Medhioub, Walid; Sechet, Veronique; Truquet, Philippe; Bardouil, Michele; Amzil, Zouher; Lassus, Patrick; Soudant, Philippe.
Growth and spirolide production of the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium ostenfeldii (Danish strain CCMP1773) were studied in batch culture and a photobioreactor (continuous cultures). First, batch cultures were grown in 450 mL flasks without aeration and under varying conditions of temperature (16 and 22 degrees C) and culture medium (L1, f/2 and L1 with addition of soil extract). Second, cultures were grown at 16 degrees C in 8 L aerated flat-bottomed vessels using L1 with soil extract as culture medium. Finally, continuous cultures in a photobioreactor were conducted at 18 degrees C in L1 with soil extract; pH was maintained at 8.5 and continuous stirring was applied. This study showed that A. ostenfeldii growth was significantly affected by temperature....

Ethanol production from sweet sorghum juice under very high gravity conditions: Batch, repeated-batch and scale up fermentation Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Nuanpeng,Sunan; Laopaiboon,Lakkana; Srinophakun,Penjit; Klanrit,Preekamol; Jaisil,Prasit; Laopaiboon,Pattana.
Batch ethanol fermentations from sweet sorghum juice by Saccharomyces cerevisiae NP 01 were carried out in a 500 ml air-locked Erlenmeyer flask under very high gravity (VHG) and static conditions. The maximum ethanol production efficiency was obtained when 9 g l-1 of yeast extract was supplemented to the juice. The ethanol concentration (P), productivity (Qp) and yield (Yp/s) were 120.24 ± 1.35 g l-1, 3.01 ± 0.08 g l-1 h-1 and 0.49 ± 0.01, respectively. Scale up ethanol fermentation in a 5-litre bioreactor at an agitation rate of 100 rev min-1 revealed that P, Qp and Yp/s were 139.51 ± 0.11 g l-1, 3.49 ± 0.00 g l-1 h-1 and 0.49 ± 0.01, respectively, whereas lower P (119.53 ± 0.20 g l-1) and Qp (2.13 ± 0.01 g l-1 h-1) were obtained in a 50-litre bioreactor....

Influence of carbon source and the fermentation process on levan production by Zymomonas mobilis analyzed by the surface response method Ciênc. Tecnol. Aliment.
Borsari,Raquel Renan Jorge; Celligoi,Maria Antonia P. Colabone; Buzato,João Batista; Silva,Rui Sérgio dos Santos Ferreira da.
The aim of this study is to assess sugar cane juice and sucrose as substrates, the batch and fed batch processes and their interaction in the levan production using a complete factorial design. Zymomonas mobilis was cultivated in different sugar cane juice and sucrose concentrations in two fermentation processes at 25 °C for 20 h. A complete factorial design (2³) was used to analyze the effects of the type and concentration of the substrate, as well as the batch and fed batch processes. A complete second factorial design (2²) was used to observe the importance of sugar cane juice. The results indicated that the batch process improved the levan production reaching 40.14 g/L. The addition of sugar cane juice was not statistically significant for levan...

Semi-scale production of PHAs from waste frying oil by Pseudomonas fluorescens S48 BJM
Gamal,Rawia F.; Abdelhady,Hemmat M.; Khodair,Taha A.; El-Tayeb,Tarek S.; Hassan,Enas A.; Aboutaleb,Khadiga A..
The present study aimed at developing a strategy to improve the volumetric production of PHAs by Pseudomonas fluorescens S48 using waste frying oil (WFO) as the sole carbon source. For this purpose, several cultivations were set up to steadily improve nutrients supply to attain high cell density and high biopolymer productivity. The production of PHAs was examined in a 14 L bioreactor as one-stage batch, two-stage batch, and high-cell-density fed-batch cultures. The highest value of polymer content in one-stage bioreactor was obtained after 60 h (33.7%). Whereas, the two-stage batch culture increased the polymer content to 50.1% after 54 h. High-cell-density (0.64 g/L) at continuous feeding rate 0.55 mL/l/h of WFO recorded the highest polymer content after...

Simulação do transporte e da sorção de imazaquin em colunas de solo Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Barizon,Robson Rolland Monticelli; Lavorenti,Arquimedes; Regitano,Jussara Borges; Prata,Fábio; Tornisielo,Valdemar Luiz.
