We report evidence of paleo-cold seep associated activities, preserved in methane-derived carbonates in association with chemosynthetic clams (Calyptogena sp.) from a sediment core in the Krishna-Godavari basin, Bay of Bengal. Visual observations and calculations based on high-resolution wet bulk density profile of a core collected on board R/V Marion Dufresne (May 2007) show zones of sharp increase in carbonate content (10-55 vol%) within 16-20 meters below seafloor (mbsf). The presence of Calyptogena clam shells, chimneys, shell breccias with high Mg calcite cement, and pyrite within this zone suggest seepage of methane and sulfide-bearing fluid to the seafloor in the past. Highly depleted carbon isotopic values (delta(13)C ranges from -41 to -52% VPDB)... |

Hydrographic data were collected from 3 to 10 September 1996 along two transects; one at 18 degrees N and the other at 90 degrees E. The data were used to examine the thermohaline, circulation and chemical properties of the Bay of Bengal during the withdrawal phase of the southwest monsoon. The surface salinity exhibited wide spatial variability with values as low as 25.78 at 18 degrees N / 87 degrees E and as high as 34.79 at 8 degrees N / 90 degrees E. Two high salinity cells (S > 35.2) were noticed around 100 m depth along the 90 degrees E transect. The wide scatter in T-S values between 100 and 200 m depth was attributed to the presence of the Arabian Sea High Salinity (ASHS) water mass. Though the warm and low salinity conditions at the sea surface... |

Cyclone Nargis (Figure 1a) made landfall in Myanmar (formerly Burma) on 2 May 2008 with sustained winds of approximately 210 kilometers per hour, equivalent to a category 3–4 hurricane. In addition, Nargis brought approximately 600 millimeters of rain and a storm surge of 3–4 meters to the low-lying and densely populated Irrawaddy River delta. In its wake, the storm left an estimated 130,000 dead or missing and more than $10 billion in economic losses. It was the worst natural disaster to strike the Indian Ocean region since the 26 December 2004 tsunami and the worst recorded natural disaster ever to affect Myanmar. |

New multi-channel seismic data were acquired in the northern part of the Bay of Bengal and at the northernmost termination of the 90°E Indian Ridge offshore Bangladesh. This survey was coupled with a seismic refraction experiment indicating this offshore basin is here floored by a thinned (15 km thick) continental crust, injected by Mesozoic volcanism. This attenuated continental crust is interpreted as formed during Gondwana super-continent fragmentation during a syn-rift period. The dominant tectonic pattern is marked by NE-SW trending tilted blocks filled by syn-rift sediments clearly identified on seismic profiles. The uppermost part of this continental crust (3–4 km thick) shows a complex assemblage of dipping reflectors and west-facing tilted blocks... |

Salinity in the Bay of Bengal is highly heterogeneous, with extremely fresh waters found at the surface in the Northern part of the basin, and saltier waters at subsurface as well as to the south. This paper investigates the seasonal structure of sea surface salinity of the Bay in a regional high-resolution model forced by ERA-Interim reanalysis and various precipitation products. Surface circulation is believed to drive the spreading of northern Bay of Bengal fresh waters to the rest of the Indian Ocean. We first present a series of experiments to infer the sensitivity of modeled circulation to various numerical choices. Surface circulation is found to be sensitive to the horizontal resolution of the model, with the 1/12° version appearing much more... |
