Mussel samples have been placed in plastic-mesh bags hung on wood poles (« bouchots »), at 4 locations of a mussel culture area in the bay of Vilaine (South Brittany, France). They have been monitored for one year, from February 2000 to February 2001. The recorded growth have been rather fast (plus 1.2 g per month between April and September), and mortalities moderate (between 15% to 25%), with better results in southern stations, further from the estuary. Among the physico-chemical parameters recorded, the most striking were very low salinities (below 10 g/l) recorded for days, after heavy rains. They provoqued a valve closure of mussels (recorded by a « valvometer »). Some physiological indicators being tested (muscle force and hermeticity) seemed to... |

In coastal estuarine embayments, retention of water masses due to coastal topography may result in an increased contribution of continental organic matter in food webs. However, in megatidal embayments, the effect of topography can be counterbalanced by the process of tidal mixing. Large amounts of continental organic matter are exported each year by rivers to the oceans. The fate of terrestrial organic matter in food webs of coastal areas and on neighboring coastal benthic communities was therefore evaluated, at multi-trophic levels, from primary producers to primary consumers and predators. Two coastal areas of the French Atlantic coast, differing in the contributions from their watershed, tidal range and aperture degree, were compared using carbon and... |

A beam trawl survey of the Bay of Vilaine was conducted from 1981 to 1997. Changes in the commercial fish community were analyzed by comparing the characteristics at the year and decadal scales. The community structure and nursery function of the Bay were steady during the period. However, specific richness, assiduity and distribution indices demonstrated a reduction in the second decade. The global abundance fell from 105.8 ind.ha-1 to 31.3 ind.ha-1. This trend was less marked for the external more marine stratum, which exhibited the lowest densities. The results are discussed in terms of ecological meaning of such a community, compared with the overall demersal fish community. The reasons of the decrease are questioned regarding nursery habitat, local... |
