Beach nourishment is the process of dumping sand on the beach to increase the width or the height of the beach. For along time this had been the most widely used on the beach. Table shows the many beach nourishment programs that have been implemented on the beach. While beach nourishment is regarded as soft and environmentally friendly method of combating coastal erosion it is a stopgap temporary measure. It requires periodic implementation. The return period of the nourishment programs since 1982 averages two years. This option is only a stopgap measure and not permanent. Hence this option cannot be viewed as a lasting solution to the problem. |

The Bar Beach on Victoria Island has been the scene of very active erosion in the past since the construction of the east and west moles between 1908 and 1912. The moles were constructed to protect the dredged deep (Commodore Channel) entrance into the Lagos harbor from intense wave action and the silting up of the channel. The construction of breakwaters interrupted the long-shore transport of sand from west of the west mole to the east along the shoreline. The interference has resulted in the trapping of about 0.5 and 0.75 million cubic meters of sand per year behind the west mole leading to an accreting Lighthouse beach on the western side of the harbour entrance. However, the Bar beach on the down-drift side is starved of sediments. Studies carried out... |

The dynamic state of the Nigerian shoreline, dominantly erosional has been a source of concern to various state and Federal Governments particularly in the past few decades because of the enormous adverse socio-economic implementation it engenders. An ability to predict the future behavioural patterns of the Nigerian shoreline affords an invaluable scientific input into long term and large scale managerial planning for the Nigerian coastal zone. This paper documents a first attempt at formulating a mathematical model for beach states in Nigeria using Victoria bar beach as a case study. A controlled section of the beach was selected while measurements of some of the variable characteristics were carried out periodically. While it is ultimately desirable to... |

Estero Ciego beach is located in the tourist area in Holguín province, northeastern coast of Cuba. At present, the beach suffers an erosion process, being observed the appearance of extensive rocky surfaces in the eastern half of the beach as well as a marked deficit of sand in the coast. The objective of this study is to define the engineering solutions required to improve the aesthetic and use conditions of the beach. As main action it is proposed the artificial nourishment of sand, since it constitutes a solution that creates the aesthetic conditions rapidly. As a complement to guarantee the beach stability for a longer period of time, it is also intended to reduce part of the rocky surface that presently exists on the coastline in the eastern half of... |

An assessment of the coastal erosion problems along selected stretches around the Zanzibar coastline as well as along the mainland coastline of Tanzania, indicated a significant contribution to the problem by human activities. During the study, 56 eroding beaches were examined to assess the extent of anthropogenic activities to the problem. Human-induced erosion was observed at nine sites. By interfering with natural processes, human activities either initiated erosion or enhanced its rate. The activities identified fall into three categories namely, removal of beach material, removal of the protection against wave battering and obstruction of sediment supply. |
