Consumer Preferences in Purchasing Beef and the Values they Attribute to Branded Beef Products AgEcon

There have been significant changes in consumer demand at the retail counter, such as health, convenience, palatability preferences, and safety concerns. Branded programs offer a means for satisfying consumer demand for high quality and differentiated beef products. To help answer the question of who is purchasing branded beef market and why, an online survey was sent to interested beef consumers to determine their preferences of purchasing, as well as values they attribute to certain product characteristics. The total sample response from 13,000 contacted consumers was 502 responses, which according to Kreiche and Morgan, 1970 is a valid sample size. The objective of this study is twofold: first, to determine if, in the long run, health concerns affect the retail demand for beef in the United States via changes in consumer dietary preferences, and second, to establish if media coverage of popular diets (media frenzy) causes the change in retail demand for beef or if it simply reports the facts about the changes in consumer dietary preferences. The Demand for Beef in Indonesia: Implications for Australian Agribusiness AgEcon

Meat consumption and socio-demographic data from the 1990, 1993 and 1996 SUSENAS Household Food Expenditure and Consumption Surveys were employed to estimate the demand for meats in Indonesia. The focus was on the Provinces of DKI Jakarta and West Java where about one-fourth of the Indonesian population reside. Statistical and econometric procedures were used to aggregate the 16 meat types recorded in the SUSENAS into four Meat Groups. Welfare Measurement and Quality Product Differentiation in Agriculture: An Example From the EU15 Beef Sector AgEcon

This paper examines the impact of two different model specifications on welfare estimations. A model specification that takes into account product differentiation is compared to a specification where the product differentiation is overlooked. The welfare comparison under both specifications show some biases of aggregation as well as ambiguous results: the welfare under one specification may be larger or lower than the welfare under the alternative assumption. In order to illustrate our theoretical conclusions, we present an application to the EU15 beef market. We show that the welfare when the product differentiation is taken into account is smaller than the welfare when the product differentiation is omitted.
