The transformation of the soybean cultivars BR-16 and Doko with the AHAS gene resulted in the development of imazapyr-tolerant herbicide genotypes. A winter greenhouse trial was conducted in order to compare the conventional genotypes BR-16 and Doko with their transformed counterparts under imazapyr applications. Some aspects (number of pods and seeds weight) were evaluated and observations showed that genotype BR-16-AHAS compared to their conventional counterparts. Another experiment was conducted with the two transformed genotypes (AHAS) at a dosage of zero and 100 g i.a. ha-1 imazapyr application in the summer. The relative responses of the two genotypes were similar to the winter results but the herbicide effects differed regarding mainly the most... |

Abstract: This study provides information about the effect of chronic ingestion of a decoction of Bauhinia forficata on the behavior of rats. The aim of this study was to investigate the exploratory activity, anxiety level, and blood glucose of healthy rats submitted to prolonged treatment with a decoction of B. forficata. Twenty male rats, aged two months and weighing approximately 145g were randomly distributed into two groups. The Bauhinia group freely ingested a decoction of B.forficata for 4 weeks, while the control group received water. Body weight, food and fluid intake, and glycemic index were quantified. The open field (OF) and elevated plus maze (EPM) tests were applied at the end of the experiment. Data were analyzed by Student?s t test for... |

Whereas roots of globalization are far reaching, it is primarily a modern age phenomenon. Modern business operation and the world economy are characterized by domination of multinational corporations, strong presence of the government in economy and the long-term tendency towards globalization in manufacturing, trading and consumption in the world. Containing both risks and opportunities, globalization is a problem of manifold nature. For some it means regression and falling into “neocolonialism”, the others glorify it. It is logical to ask the following questions: What are the consequences of globalization for governments, nations, companies and individuals? What are the business, social and ethical issues it causes? In one word, is it possible to be... |

Prior to the administration of any anesthetics, capturing the semi-aquatic capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) demands physical restraint, which presents immense challenges. Traditional methods, such as lassoing and traps, are prone to induce acute stress, may result in injury, and can even have fatal outcomes. As part of a larger population control project using contraceptive methods, frequent capture-induced stress and injury may directly affect normal reproductive physiology. Thus, choosing a less stress-inducing method was imperative. In this report, we describe methods of conditioning to enable frequent capture and manipulation, using bait as a positive reinforcement associated with a special click-sound, in a free-ranging population of 40 capybaras.... |

A high incidence of the bug Sthenaridea carmelitana (Carvalho) on sorghum, Sorghum bicolor, and on corn, Zea mays, was observed in the field, in Sete Lagoas, MG. In laboratory, using a free choice test, the bugs prefield, in Sete Lagoas. In laboratory, using a free choice test, the bugs preferred to feed on sorghum grain (from milk to hard stage) than on other plant parts like panicle (without grain) or leaf. S. carmelitana preferred to feed on sorghum than on corn. |
