A note on stability in food matrices of Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis-controlling bacteriophages Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Robeson,James; Turra,Gabriel; Huber,Karen; Borie,Consuelo.
Background Lytic bacteriophages are bacterial viruses that upon infection kill their host cells and therefore have re-emerged as biological control agents of bacterial pathogens, particularly in the field of food related infections. Here, we investigated the stability in different food matrices of five phage isolates capable of controlling the foodborne pathogen Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (SE). Results We found that two phages, originally isolated from food sources, were up to 5 logs more stable than three phages isolated from sewage, in ten food matrices (fresh and processed) at both 4°C and 18°C. Conclusion Lytic phages isolated from contaminated food sources seem to be a better choice when structuring phage cocktails to be used in the...

Banana, papaya and pineapple are the most consumed tropical fruits in the world, being Brazil one of the main producers. Fungi Colletotrichum musae, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Fusarium subglutinans f.sp. ananas cause severe post harvest diseases and losses in fruits quality. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effectiveness of five monoterpenes to inhibit the mycelial growth and conidia germination of these three phytopathogens. The monoterpenes citral, citronellal, L-carvone, isopullegol and a-pinene were diluted in ethanol to final concentrations from 0.2 to 1%. All monoterpenes were found to inhibit the growth of the three studies fungi in a dose-dependent manner. Citral was the most effective of the oils tested and showed potent fungicidal...

Biocontrol potential of saline- or alkaline-tolerant Trichoderma asperellum mutants against three pathogenic fungi under saline or alkaline stress conditions BJM
Guo,Ruiting; Wang,Zhiying; Huang,Ying; Fan,Haijuan; Liu,Zhihua.
ABSTRACT Salinity and alkalinity are major abiotic stresses that limit growth and development of poplar. We investigated biocontrol potential of saline- and alkaline-tolerant mutants of Trichoderma asperellum to mediate the effects of salinity or alkalinity stresses on Populus davidiana × P. alba var. pyramidalis (PdPap poplar) seedlings. A T-DNA insertion mutant library of T. asperellum was constructed using an Agrobacterium tumefaciens mediated transformation system; this process yielded sixty five positive transformants (T1–T65). The salinity tolerant mutant, T59, grew in Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) containing up to 10% (1709.40 mM) NaCl. Under NaCl-rich conditions, T59 was most effective in inhibiting Alternaria alternata (52.00%). The alkalinity...

Biological control of mycotoxin-producing molds. Repositório Alice
MEDEIROS, F. H. V.; MARTINS, S. J.; ZUCCHI, T. D.; MELO, I. S. de; BATISTA, L. R.; MACHADO, J. da C..
Mycotoxins are produced by the secondary metabolism of many fungi and can be found in almost 25% of the world?s agricultural commodities. These compounds are toxic to humans, animals, and plants and therefore, efforts should be made to avoid mycotoxin contamination in food and feed. Besides, up to 25% of all harvested fruits and vegetables are lost due to storage molds and/ or mycotoxin contamination and many methods have been applied to mitigate these issues, but most of them rely on the use of fungicides. Although chemicals are often the first defensive line against mycotoxigenic fungi, the indiscriminate use of fungicides are awakening the public perception due to their noxious effects on the environment and human/animal health. Thus, there is an...

Biological potential of fungi associated to Prays oleae in Trás-os-Montes (Northeastern region of Portugal) IPB - Escola Superior Agrária
Oliveira, Ivo; Baptista, Paula; Lino-Neto, Teresa; Bento, Albino; Pereira, J.A..
Olive groves represent an important fraction of the agricultural practices in Portugal, mainly in the region of Trás-os-Montes. Our work pretends to disclose the fungal diversity associated to one of the major olives pests, the Prays oleae Bern. Besides evaluating the extent of the presence of entomopathogenic fungi, we also intend to reveal other promising fungi with potential to be used as biological control agents. In order to achieve this goal, larvae and pupae of the three generations of P.oleae were collected from several orchards. Whenever a fungal agent was associated to the cause of death, we proceeded to the preparation of fungal pure cultures, DNA isolation, amplification and sequencing of their ITS region for species identification. High fungal...

BETTIOL, W..
Biopesticide are living microorganisms (fungi, bacteria, microsporidia and viruses), microscopic animals (nematodes) and macroorganisms (predators and parasitoids, insects and mites) or natural products derived from these organisms that are used as plant protection products. The demand for biopesticides and biocompatible products to control pests, diseases and weeds has been increasing in Brazil in recent years, with increases in concern about the environment and contamination of food with synthetic chemical pesticides. It is also important to consider the expansion of the organic farming area and lhe move towards integrated pest management (IPM) in Brazil. This artide provide an analysis and summary of the use of biopestides in Brazil, including historic...

VARGAS-HOYOS, H. A.; CHIARAMONTE, J. B.; SANTOS, S. N.; QUEIROZ, S. C. do N. de; MELO, I. S. de.
White mold, caused by S. sclerotiorum, is one important disease of soybean crops (Glicyne Max. (L)Merrill.) with considerable yield losses. Absence of effective control and resistance of the fungus to commercial fungicides make this phytopathogen a serious problem in tropical regions. Streptomyces species turn out to be potential candidates for agricultural applications due to their biotechnological features. The goal of this research was bioprospecting Streptomyces sp. for biocontrol of white mold. In order to evaluate the antifungal activity, six pre-selected isolates: S. rishiriensis (3AS4), S. albolungus (3BS4), S. champavatti (CanV2 39), S. violascens (CanV2 06f) and S. covourensis (1AS2a, 1AS2c) were used. They were grown for 2 weeks at 28 ºC at 135...

Caenorhabditis elegans as an indicator of toxicity of Bacillus thuringiensis strains to Meloidogyne incognita race 3 Ciência Rural
Montalvão,Sandro Coelho Linhares; Castro,Marcelo Tavares de; Soares,Carlos Marcelo Silveira; Blum,Luiz Eduardo Bassay; Monnerat,Rose Gomes.
ABSTRACT: The cotton plant (Gossypium hirsutum) is affected by several diseases of economic importance, among them root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita races 3 and 4). Methods to control this disease include the application of nematicides, solarization, deep plowing, crop rotation and use of antagonistic microorganisms. Among species of Bacillus, there are strains that act as bioregulators and antagonists of several pathogens. Tests to identify these strains are hampered by the difficulty of obtaining large populations of the pathogen and by the time of execution of the in vivo tests that should be conducted for about 90 days. The objective of this research was to compare the toxicity of B. thuringiensis strains to two nematodes, M. incognita and...
