ABSTRACT Biofortification is a strategy that aims to improve the nutritional quality of foods through genetic breeding. Zinc is an important mineral for human health. It is used in various physiological processes such as immune function, antioxidant protection, growth and development. Therefore, zinc is one of the most studied minerals in the biofortification of grains in cowpea. Adaptability and stability parameters for potassium and calcium contents and grain yield in cowpea lines. Repositório Alice

The aim of the present study is to estimate the adaptability and stability of K and Ca contents, and grain yield in cowpea lines for release as new cultivars. Forty-four inbred lines and cultivars were assessed in seven sites of the Brazilian semi-arid region. Significant statistical differences were observed in the treatment, environments and environment treatment interaction mean squares for all variables. The methods by Eberhart and Russell (1966), Lin and Binns (1988), and the additive main effects and multiplicative interaction (AMMI) showed similar results in the selection of superior materials. Backgorund: Cowpea is a crop widely used in developing countries due its rusticity. Besides its rich genotypic variability, most breeding programs do not explore its potential to improve elements uptake. Selenium (Se) is a scarce element in most soils, resulting in its deficiency being common in human diets. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction between biofortification with Se and genotypic variation in cowpea, on the concentrations of Se in roots, leaves + stem and grains.

Deficiencies of micronutrients such as vitamin A are widespread, expecially in Africa. Biofortified crops such as maize, bred for high levels of provitamin A might offer a solution, but these crops are often bright orange, and African maize consumers prefer white. To estimate the consumers interest in orange biofortified maize, sensory evaluations were organized in rural Ghana with white, yellow and orange maize. The effect of information on willingness to pay for biofortification was estimated using a simulated radio message. BIOFORTIFICATION, AN ALTERNATIVE TO REDUCE FOOD INSECURITY AND ITS ADVERSE EFFECTS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: A HONDURAS CASE STUDY AgEcon

Food insecurity can generate nutritional problems such as iron deficiency anemia, which in countries like Honduras is a moderate public health problem. The AgroSalud project is enhancing the iron content of beans and rice in order to improve the iron intake of vulnerable groups, especially children under five years and pregnant women. Iron- biofortified rice and beans together can reduce the deficit in iron intake by more than a 100% depending on the age group, farmer adoption and other variables. This, in turn, would increase the number of healthy (disability-adjusted life years, DALYs) years that the Honduran population could live.

This review presents an overview of biofortification, with an emphasis on orange-flesh sweet potatoes (OFSP), and points out the effects of food processing on nutritional compounds. The identification of cultivars and biofortification actions to obtain biofortified OFSP by conventional breeding are presented as affordable strategies to supply β-carotene to alleviate vitamin A deficiency, without having ethical dilemmas related to transgenics.

Storing processed food products can cause alterations in their chemical compositions. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate carotenoid retention in the kernels of minimally processed normal and vitamin A precursor (proVA)-biofortified green corn ears that were packaged in polystyrene trays covered with commercial film or in multilayered polynylon packaging material and were stored. Throughout the storage period, the carotenoids were extracted from the corn kernels using organic solvents and were quantified using HPLC. Micronutrient malnutrition affects billions of people world-wide, causing serious health problems. Different micronutrient interventions are currently being used, but their overall coverage is relatively limited. Biofortification – that is, breeding staple food crops for higher micronutrient contents – has been proposed as a new agriculture-based approach. Biofortification, or the genetic improvement of the nutritional quality of food crops, is a promising strategy to combat undernutrition, particularly among the rural poor in developing countries. However, traditional methods of impact assessment do not apply to biofortified crops as little or no yield increases are expected. Significant progress has been made to develop maize varieties with improved protein quality, collectively known as quality protein maize (QPM). Micronutrient deficiencies threaten the lives of millions of poor households and those located in remote rural areas of SSA often not targeted by fortification programmes.
