Aboveground biomass and concentration of nutrients in semiarid rangeland plant species: Influence of grazing and soil moisture Phyton
Gul,B; Islam,M; Ahmad,S; Gul,S.
Spatial and temporal patterns of aboveground biomass and nutritive value of rangeland species with respect to the influence of grazing and soil moisture were investigated. The research was conducted during two years at the Tomagh Research Station, near Sanjawi, Ziarat District, Balochistan, Pakistan. This area is protected from grazing since 1998; however, some of the area is open for grazing. Tree sites were selected for research purposes: a protected plain, a protected hilly, and an unprotected plain grazed area. Sampling was carried out during the spring, summer and autumn seasons. Results revealed that soil moisture was greater at the protected than unprotected sites. The aboveground plant biomass was 66% to 76% lower at unprotected than protected...

Biomass for energy production in the context of selected European and international policy objectives AgEcon
Becker, Arno.
Biomass based energy production has attained a significant market share within the developing renewable energy market. In comparison to alternative renewable energy sources, biomass has several special features: it is not inexhaustible in the short term (limitation of arable land) and it is not only an energy source. Other usages like food or feed compete with energy production for this resource. A number of problems arise which have a direct impact on the fulfillment of policy objectives which are connected with its promotion. Primarily, the production of bioenergy has significant impacts on coupled biomass markets. Further, a change in production intensity or arable land use increases the use of nutrient loads and agro - chemicals. When evaluating...

The delivery of probiotic microorganisms has been shown to be an adequate strategy for the composition of the microbiota and the activity of intestinal health, with relevant health benefits. The market for probiotic cultures for use in food in Brazil is restricted to a few multinational companies, which sell high-cost imported products. A prospection of microorganisms with probiotic properties can lead to the production of lactic ferments, which must have their results proven by scientific studies. Embrapa has a collection of lactobacilli isolated from dairy products identified according to the species level and selected with the function of probiotic potential and properties of technological interest. Lactobacillus plantarum is a homofermentative...

Biomass Supply from Alternative Cellulosic Crops and Crop Residues: A Preliminary Spatial Bioeconomic Modeling Approach AgEcon
Egbendewe-Mondzozo, Aklesso; Swinton, Scott M.; Izaurralde, R. Cesar; Manowitz, David H.; Zhang, Xuesong.
This paper introduces a spatial bioeconomic model for study of potential cellulosic biomass supply at regional scale. By modeling the profitability of alternative crop production practices, it captures the opportunity cost of replacing current crops by cellulosic biomass crops. The model draws upon biophysical crop input-output coefficients, price and cost data, and spatial transportation costs in the context of profit maximization theory. Yields are simulated using temperature, precipitation and soil quality data with various commercial crops and potential new cellulosic biomass crops. Three types of alternative crop management scenarios are simulated by varying crop rotation, fertilization and tillage. The cost of transporting biomass to a specific...

Can Dispersed Biomass Processing Protect the Environment and Cover the Bottom Line for Biofuel? AgEcon
Egbendewe-Mondzozo, Aklesso; Swinton, Scott M.; Bals, Bryan D.; Dale, Bruce E..
This paper compares environmental and profitability outcomes for a centralized biorefinery for cellulosic ethanol that does all processing versus a biorefinery linked to a decentralized array of local depots that pretreat biomass into concentrated briquettes. The analysis uses a spatial bioeconomic model that maximizes predicted profit from crop and energy products, subject to the requirement that the biorefinery must be operated at full capacity. The model draws upon biophysical crop input-output coefficients simulated with the EPIC model, as well as input and output prices, spatial transportation costs, ethanol yields from biomass, and biorefinery capital and operational costs. The model was applied to 82 cropping systems simulated across 37...

Can forest management be sustainable in a bamboo dominated forest? A 12-year study of forest dynamics in western Amazon. Repositório Alice
OLIVEIRA, M. V. N. d'.; GUARINO, E. de S. G.; OLIVEIRA, L. C. de; RIBAS, L. A.; ACUNÃ, M. A..
The western Amazon supports the largest formation of neotropical bamboo forests. This forest ecosystem is neglected due to its low commercial timber volume and fragile forest structure that amplifies the damage caused by logging operations. This study was conducted in a lightly logged bamboo-dominated forest in Brazilian western Amazon, with the objective to evaluate the sustainability of the applied forest management regime in terms of tree density, above-ground dried biomass and tree bole volume stocks recovery rates and species groups. The forest dynamics were monitored over a period of 12 years in 10 permanent sample plots of 1 ha. Two main results of this study are important to the establishment of cycle lengths, logging intensities and silvicultural...
